In my mind, this is the definitive performance of this magnificent work. I'm so glad I found this video.

good performance, if it a bit slow. Listen to the Dale Warland Singers do this piece (search on KZbin) before you decide which is your favorite rendition though.

Absolutely gorgeous. This was a piece that caught me heart in the first few seconds when I first heard it, and has never let go. Thank you for this rendition, so full of aural warmth and wonder. Thanks also for the amazing video and audio quality, and for showing us the faces and passion of the singers and choir director. With great love and respect~ ❤❤❤

Agreed. I've been coming back to this song for 15 years. I don't even know or care what the words mean, it's just so beautiful. Resets my state of mind every time.

My family and I discovered this piece when we heard it in the PBS documentary Rick Steves' European Christmas. We, especially my mom, fell in love with it. Fast forward to several years later, and I was a part of my high school's concert choir, and we sang this piece for our winter concert. Learning and memorizing it was far from easy, and we were definitely pushed, but I did not mind it at all. It was absolutely beautiful and completely worth it. I kept it all a secret from my family until the concert so that they, especially my mom, would be ever pleasantly surprised by me singing one of her favorite Christmas pieces...and she definitely was. It was exactly five years ago to the day I'm writing this, and it was the last performance I did with my high school choir before the pandemic commenced. It is a highly cherished Christmas memory, and a highly cherished piece of music for me.

There's a dance performance choreographed by Crystal Pite called Angel's Atlas that has this piece. It's at the end of the performance. They (The Royal Canadian Ballet) performed this right before the pandemic, then performed it again two years later. The full performance is not on KZbin, but it is out there. The piece starts with a choral piece by Tschaikovski.

Yes, this work is truly magical. I sang in a Catholic church choir where we sang motets and other classic service music for Mass every Sunday morning and holy days, and this Lauridsen motet was one of them in our repertoire. We would also perform a short concert during every Easter and Christmas, and we included this as well. 🙂

I think every singer remembers their first Lauridsen experience. There's a great documentary about him. He's truly one of the greatest choral music composers the US has ever produced.

I am a member of the Carolina Concert Choir and our director was a student of Morton Lauridsen. He told us that he said his inspiration for this piece came from seeing a very moving piece of art in an art gallery in LA California. The painting appeared to be floating. He wanted to write a piece that floated like the painting. I would have to say that he was very successful.

Breathtaking piece. I was so fortunate as to perform it years ago with my wonderful college concert choir, and it is the sort of piece that seeps into your soul. I haven't sung it for about 25 years, and hopped right in like muscle memory. Images of past tours and concerts flooded my memory. Thank you for this.
