I used to love wood working. I never threw away any scrap wood. I made jewelry and coin boxes and they always sold fast. Today's society staples or glues joint. Dovetail or die!! Plus, it is one of the most relaxing things I ever did. You realize that you missed dinner at 5:30 and it's 10pm. I love your setup. I still own all my grandfathers old tools. Wood clamps hanging up of different sizes and his prized chisels....good memories. Nice video!

Nice, I'd like to start making some boxes, I think it's a great way to build some unique skills. I know what you mean about missing dinner, all too easy to get lost in what you are working on.

@@50Acres My nephew was about three years old. I made him a wooden box about the size of a cigar box. I printed out a locomotive picture, sized for the lid. I traced it out and used a router to cut it out. He was huge on Thomas the Tank and now he had his own train box. I told him he could keep important stuff in there. He's 22 and still has it haha. He uses it for change on his dresser. After I did that. I decided to make a couple more. Then I got an old style racing car for a lid. I got a football. I got an airplane. I had a jump rope, a tea pot and a rag doll. I had almost 50 as I recall. I opened my garage........ on halloween, that way kids could get candy and people could see the boxes. I sold ever single one that day. I was pumped. So it became a side hobby with nice additional cash flow from scrap wood I usually got free.

The figure in the Hackberry and the live edge are beautiful. The walnut adds another dimension to the door. That and your dad was right. Don't beat yourself up about the mistakes. That makes you freeze up. Think about how you are going to fix them. Smart man teaching an important lesson. I have always loved the ribbons that the planers make. As a little girl, I would watch my grandfather planing in his workshop/barn, and I was mesmerized by those incredibly beautiful thin strips. Solid wood becoming plyable! Thank you for sharing this with us. Such a joy to watch! Blessings on all your endeavors. 🕊🦋

Whoever named the tree Hackberry didn’t know what the future held for hack.....What beautiful wood though, I’ve never seen Hackberry and it’s gorgeous, absolutely love it, nice rich colors. Now, about that door, you hit it out of the park!!! Loved every second of the build, the thin strip of walnut in the curves was brilliant. I really enjoy watching you work in your shop, Mike. My dad was a cabinet maker and would take me with him to the shop with him when I was a young girl. The scent of wood is still one of my favorites. You point out the imperfections in your process but I tend to like them knowing that what was built was made by hand and not by a production CNC machine. The door turned out great. Can't wait to see it in the cabin. Best regards to you and Sarah.

Never rush your work! Always take your time and be relaxed. My dad used to tell me when I was learning, "woodworking is a romantic dance!" "It's soft and warm, it's a swift movement that glides together to make one steady stride!" Never force it! You're still learning., it'll come with time! I have to admit, your videos have been getting better! You're more relaxed and you've been owning your mistakes! You're being you! Always remember that you're not here to impress anyone! I know I've been really hard on critiquing you, but now you're coming into your potential! Always know your worth and never be the smartest person in the room! You always want room to learn and grow!

Omg that’s the tree in front of my Gma’s former house now belonging to my sister is a massive, old Hackberry tree. The street she lives on is named after these trees and ours is the last on our street if not town… it’s the weirdest yet most beautiful in its own way, almost like it grew at Hogwarts or some magical, fictional place with its bizarre rounded rolls on its wonky trunk and the texture of the bark is unlike anything I’ve seen before. I’ve always wondered what the wood would look like from that sucker. Beautiful, thank you for using such a rarely used species. I have to share this with my family now

Oh that is so cool Its too bad more of them aren't left. This was a tree taken down from someone's yard, all the wood I get are from yard trees that people have taken down. At least we're saving them from becoming wood chips. I hope your family enjoys seeing what this wood looks like!

@@50Acres Thank you, I’m not sure why they aren’t grown more or if it’s become an endangered species. I hope not bc they are massive, beautiful, very unique trees. I’m thrilled you’re using lumber from these dying, old trees! So much history there and a way to use good lumber without going to the store. I made my brother in law promise to give me a portion of that tree when it does come down🤞🏽 Anyways love your work, love the cabin build and all you’ve shared, I’ve learned a lot and this door you built is stunning and well crafted

👍 Dig the squig man, nice job. I like that center punch and the tools you are acquiring. Good learning experience on not using freehand for certain things as the eye will be drawn right to any "imperfections" and take concentration away from the fine work around it. I still screw up in a hurry sometimes and try to cheat, always regretting it later.

Thanks Todd, those center punches are from Lee Valley, I finally broke down and ordered them.

I don't know what else to say Mike other then that door is sexy. Shop looks like it works great. I find it amazing how fine of a slice a sharp chisel can take off a piece of wood.

Hey Jerry, thanks man. The shop is great, its so nice to have a work area set up how I want it.

You must be the one, of whom the legend speaks about, who sharpened the Sword Of Heros in Kung Fu Panda! The dream shop is kicking in all gears man! Woohoo hoooooo! I think the inlay accent was perfect! Not one curve is the same but it is all the same! Always remember perfection is imperfection! Stay safe and healthy!

lol, I'm actually kinda mediocre when it comes to sharpening, I basically do the minimum required. The shop is great, really nice to have a productive space to work in.

Mike, only you will know all the minor “mishaps “, as you say. You’re an honest man because you point them out. But if you didn’t, and just showed us the finished product, most people would never know. Nice piece. It’ll look great as the cabin bathroom door (I’m assuming that’s where it’ll go).
