Something to note about the Weapons that is less apparent in the Legendary Edition. The Original Mass Effect had a ton of weapons in theory but in reality it had only 5-ish because all weapons within the same category behaved pretty much the same as they all had the same rate of fire, recoil, etc. The only exception was the Geth Pulse Rifle which behaved differently. They changed this in Legendary edition playing around with RoF, recoil, firing types, etc. So while ME2 seems to have less weapon variety than ME, originally this was not the case as all weapons were distinct from each other handling very differently.

Suicide Mission in ME2 is still one of the best moments in the series. I think it would be a good idea if you made a video summarizing your thoughts on the series as a whole after you played through ME3. While story is still good, it becomes obvious it wasn't planned that far ahead and there are some noticeable plot points that were abandoned. So it might be interesting to talk about it.

The Suicide Mission is one of the best constructed set pieces in gaming history. So many moving parts, absurd player choice. If ME2 was RPG-lite in everything else, it would be a RPG for the Suicide Mission alone.
@Arcling2 жыл бұрын
@@shawngillogly6873 I agree, very few moments from any game could be considered equal to Suicide Mission for me. Bioware have really outdone themselves there. Nothing from ME3 could top that, which was one of the reasons the expectations were so high (and some disappointment for me, even though I still consider ME3 as a very good game). Not sure if they would do something like this again, the amount of variables it created was certainly hard to implement. They might avoid it for future games (DA:I and ME:A were already light on possible deaths).

I never liked the start of Mass Effect 2, it just felt cheap, all those near death escapes from ME1 kind of lost the magic when shepard was so easly taken out. The Ending of ME3 was rushed and a drop in the experience quality in the last 30minutes kind of sucked. But everything in between is fantastic.
@alltheraz2 жыл бұрын
If you consider Mass Effect 2 on it's own, it is an absolutely fantastic game, and isolated from the other games, a fantastic story. In retrospect, as the second story in a trilogy, I think the dramatic change from the story they set up at the end of ME1 and the huge changes in tone and theme really hurt the trilogy, and in a few ways may have forced some of the awkward story points in ME3. I mean, at the end of ME1, you have a main character who is unique due to the fact that they (and they alone) can interact with Prothean tech, who is also a Spectre, and can go places many others can't go, a crew member who is a specialist in Prothean history, and a ship that could go anywhere (either openly or by stealth). If, hypothetically, the Protheans were working on some hidden superweapon that could be used against the Reapers, or maybe they had more data they had collected during their century-long conflict with the Reapers, wouldn't finding either of those be the next story that makes the most sense after ME1? Is the information in the Terminus Systems? Well, the Council established in the first game that they don't want to risk a war with the Terminus by sending fleets or armies anywhere in those systems, sounds like something they would have to send a Spectre for. I still think the gameplay is much better in ME2, and I absolutely love how they integrated companions and their stories into the success of the mission in ME2.

Gameplay and characters were improved in ME2. Everything else suffered. Open world aspects of the first game, freedom of exploration? Gone, replaced with single use shooting galleria levels. ME2 was the best game of the trilogy for me, massive improvement over the first game in terms of gameplay in combat, with a more focused story. The levels, while smaller than the first game, were better designed and felt much better than the ones in the 3rd game which felt more like linear corridors. I don't really like the paragon/renegade system though, as it actually discourages freedom of choice, rather than encourages it. You basically just go all blue or all red for a play through, there's no reward for choosing different options depending on the individual situation.

Overlord makes me cry every time and I have lost track of how many times I've played through it, so it's been quite a few times. So no matter what else, a piece of art that can make you feel as deeply, even if it's not as deep for every person, is definitely something special. ME3 has some more scenes like that but they are either optional or not as potent. What Bioware understands more than any other company is the importance of people. We connect to people, even if they are fictional, even if they are animated and even if they aren't human. ME2 works so well because there are so many people to connect to (even if different players might connect to different NPCs).

She is my favourite squadmate in the trilogy Second one is quite major, in particular in connection to your plans for lore/story video and that you enjoy worldbuilding/lore. Are you aware that Mass Effect has plenty of companion materials? Books, comics, iOS game (Jacob as MC) and even animated feature movie! (which happens before ME3, so good moment for you to watch it) Since you played ME1 already, you know that Anderson was first human candidate for Spectre, but what happened during the infamous mission with Saren? How did Cerberus get their hands on Shepard's body? Soon you will meet Kahlee Sanders, what is her relation to Anderson? (and who is she in general?) And most importantly, who is Blasto, the hanar Spectre? XD All of that and more is out there. I have read and watched it all. I would strongly recommend you to the same and expand your lore beyond just the games

The shift from RPG to Action is the "EAfication" of Bioware. It worked really well with ME because it is, at its core, an action game; and the gameplay really benefited from it, unlike DA that is an actual RPG at it's core. They really refined that action gameplay in ME3 and that game, aside from some annoying and unnecessary things they shoved in there (because it *is* EA we're talking about here), turned out to be a masterpiece after they 'fixed' the ridiculous ending.

Andromeda was way, way better game than I thought. I was really expecting to play it, but then then all the reviews bashed game being buggy as hell and just downright bad game overall and decided to pretty much never buy it. Now just some time ago noticed it in Gamepass and decided to try it quickly too see how bad it is. To my surprise I didn't ran into any bugs I can recall of and I was expecting to see a lot of them. Also the game and setting wasn't that bad imo. Sure, it's definitely not as great as any of the original series, but by all means it's not a bad game. Like from some user reviews I read dozens of stuff like "Andromeda has fetch quests and repetitive gameplay". Like ME1 side missions aren't repetitive? They're absolute shaite imo. ME2 probing isn't repetitive? Or the final boss on ME2? Let's face it, it's really not very good, it's about as generic something can be. Graphics are said to be downgrade and sure models are quite bad in Androdema, but overall the graphics are really great, especially some of the environments looks gorgeous. Also the "reboot" could've allowed really good new so-to-say spinoff to spawn, but many people just bashed it way, way too hard.

@@jothain same. I didn’t play it for ages then grabbed it for 7 bucks one day. Was worth it. Yeah I have a lot of criticisms of it, the fetch quests and the unevenness of the main path being among them, but overall I had a better time with it than I have for many AAA open world games I’ve tried.

Mass effect 3 suffered do to EA mostly. One dlc should have been there since day one. Technically it was but it was pre-order only. But with this release I'm much more satisfied than I was on original release.

While I love the vision, polish and emotional beats of ME2, it felt overly like a ‘babysitting/friend sim’ to me a lot of the time…like I was always checking my ‘social appointment book’ rather than actually going on missions and saving the galaxy 😂

I feel that people who label ME as an RPG are only doing so, so they can accuse the game of NOT being an RPG. To me, ME is a story interspersed with moments of combat, character building, inventory management, base (ship) building and exploration. It's the story and the interaction with the companions that I return for time and time again. The improving combat and movement in ME2 and 3 make it more comfortable to move through that story. But it's the story and companions that made this game great.

ME2 is the last Bioware game I really enjoyed. The combat, writing, and companions were all improved from ME1 and while I agree it's disappointing that they stripped away a lot of the RPG mechanics, I think that the combat improvements more than make up for this. Never even played ME3 because I didn't like the companions as much as 2, so I was waiting for a sale/price drop to get it and then its release state purged me of any need to ever pick it up so I'm looking forward to your review and story video to wrap it up for me.

ME2 was my favorite of the trilogy by far. ME3 isn't a bad game. But it does suffer in comparison. Partly due to corporate meddling. Partly due to bad decisions by the writing team. (And I don't just mean the controversy you can't help but have heard about.) Still, worth playing. And most of the problems w/ ME3 to me are in the very beginning, and in a handful of the final missions. Most of the game is very good.

Still one of my all-time favorites. The whole series is great. The combat is more action packed, while not at PAR with pure shooters. But for me the story and in this 2nd part the companions made my day. Lair of the Shadowbroker is my favorite DLC.

Hey man, thank you for your video content! I've been watching your channel for almost a year now. Wanted to ask - do you have any plans for adding a new video format or maybe section of the main review videos with something like completionist impression on games you've completed? With stressing out some difficulties on certain stages or impressions on quest chains, difficulties of some achievements, etc. I feel like it would be awesome to look at the game from the perspective of someone who actually 100% it. Because as much as I like watching your videos - they feel like regular reviews of a person who's done some side quests and main story and that's it but it is quite possible that you had lots of interesting moments that most of people wouldn't experience unless they try to do what you do.

I don't think it's a 100% unless you get all of your companions killed on the suicide mission save one. It's a lot harder to do than having everyone survive. A little bit of a spoiler, if Morinth is the lone survivor, she is the only companion that won't join in ME3. Well, she kind of has a cameo, but not in the way that you would like. I think you need one companion to survive or Shep dies also on the suicide mission. After getting all of my companions killed in ME2 as well as killing Wrex on Virmire, I was a little disappointed in the ME3 story as it basically followed the same path whether they were there or not. Maybe I was expecting too much.
@jothain2 жыл бұрын
Interesting Wrex never died on any of my playthroughs, but now playing me3 he's quite crucial part of the story. Gotta check out how his death would affect me3 in many parts.
@joe6pak142 жыл бұрын
@@jothain This is something of a spoile, so you have been warned. The only way for Mordin to survive the events of ME3 is to kill Wrex on Virmire. The other criteria for this to happen is that Shep is a Renegade and the data is destroyed on Tuchanka which causes Eve to die. I think you need to deal with the Salarians to sabotage the cure also. Renegade Shep will get an interrupt when Mordin wants to go up the tower to disperse the cure. Shep convinces Mordin not to sacrifice himself and Mordin flees instead.

Mass effect 2 was the right call : if you can't make meaningful and fun exploration and character progression and combat and narrative choices, pick 2 of those and do them right. Then when you nail that, and they sure did, you can make a bit more of the other ones in the 3rd game. I had forgotten there were 2 awesome DLC for ME2. Arrival is pretty bad though : pure shooter without companions, barely any choices... Without spoilers, if someone finds the ending of ME3 underwhelming, just make the ending of the Citadel DLC your cannon ending. Best DLC ever except for the 2 from Witcher 3 and maybe XCOM 2 war of the chosen.

ME2 is the overall best game in the trilogy, I will give you that. But don't go into ME3 thinking less of it. It's a fun game, with a good story, but sadly, not a good conclusion, and that's where most of the fans had their problems. But the gameplay is by far the best in the series. Hope you like that as well.

I don't remember the comic thing. Then again I did play through the original me2 on version 1.0 (no internet at the time) and version 1.0 didn't actually have save import which to me was completely inexcusable since one of the major draws was that it was a continuation of your choices. Still a great game though.

This one's tough for me especially considering how neither are fresh in my mind. Both had some half-assed side-mission/side tasks. My main thing with ME2 was the final mission left a really bad taste in my mouth when it came to decision making and how it led to *SPOILERS* certain characters being killed off. I was very ready for 2 after 1, but I abandoned the series after 2 even with all the improvements.

Quite good review. Though just completed game myself yesterday in form of LE-version. Game was almost as good as I remembered it to be. However I kinda disliked the gunplay. I had the remembering that it wasn't anything special, but man it's pretty damn generic. Also the final boss was lame. To be honest I didn't even remember it until saw it again. Also the damned probing was so repetitive and boring thing to do. "Probe launched" after 100th time begins to feel really, really bad. Also the "setting" was way tighter than I remembered, but I suppose that's not that bad thing as backtracking is quite tedious in many games. Side missions luckily were much, much better than in ME1. 8/10 from me.

For me, the 'soft timers' you mentioned were things that absolutely ruined the story for me the first time through, and made it feel like I *had* to play by someone else's script (aka a FAQ) in order to get "the math" right. In other words, the game stopped being a story and started being a math problem or logic problem that had correct and incorrect choices rather than a story that I could play through as a role-playing experience. As a result, I never have enjoyed the second game as much as I enjoyed the first, which felt like I was able to focus on the story in any given moment instead of having to plan ahead for those timer triggers. I appreciate that most people really enjoyed the game, but for me? The first game remains my favorite of the original trilogy. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the third game, and still hope you will take the time to add Andromeda to your playthrough. I'm curious to hear how you feel about the RPG-ness of that one.
@Shad0wchasers12 жыл бұрын
It also didn't help that my first experience with ME2 was when it first released, and so many important story beats or characters were carved off and held hostage behind paywalls (particularly since I romanced Liara in the first game and couldn't renew that relationship unless I bought the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC). That was my first encounter with modern DLC interrupting the way a story was being told and holding it hostage to force more players to buy added content. I was *furious* at the time, and never quite forgave EA for how they handled the Mass Effect series after buying BioWare (ME 2 through Andromeda).

Mass effect 2 really made it feel like you were playing a season of star trek. Also I'll argue that streamlining the inventory really improved the role playing aspect of the game, because you're spending less time in menu's playing with your "paper doll" and more time in conversations making choices.

Mass Effect 2 I like the game, and I wanted it to be the first PS3 game I owned though I got Fallout New Vegas first because the store I got my PS3 from was out of Mass Effect 2 copies. That said it is my least favorite Mass Effect game I've played so far (everything but the mobile games) and in many ways the changes to using untrained weapons in Mass Effect 1 Legendary edition made them worse. I didn't like the gutting of the skill trees, and I hated how vehicle exploration was limited to a few DLC worlds in this game. I also think they went way too far in reducing the weapon selection. And I will never understand what the logic behind making the Heavy Pistols and Submachine Guns aka the normal weapon types used by the most classes have the least variety. In the base game there were only two of each type with a third of each added by DLC. Made even more painful because my first run on my PS3 and my earlier first run at my best friend's house was as an Engineer. That meant I was using a Submachine Gun a lot. And I greatly prefer full-auto Submachine Guns to burst fire models. Not only is the starter Submachine Gun a burst fire weapon but without the Kasumi DLC was released you couldn't get a full-auto Submachine Gun until the second set of recruitment missions. Fortunately the base game's lone full-auto Submachine Gun happened to be in Tali's recruitment mission and she's my favorite character in the franchise even back when I first played 2 so I went for her mission first not even knowing it had a full-auto Submachine Gun. But that still left me playing a decent portion of the game on my initial run at my best friend's house with no access to a gun I actually liked using.
