I have come from a family with a lot of addiction. Besides my sister and myself, we made it out without being strung out on drugs, dead on the streets, or in jail. I would take being addicted to collecting video games than anything else…matter of fact I grew up in west LA, video gaming saved me from joining a gang, slamming drugs, and just getting into trouble during high school. Hope all is well Mort.

I won't mention his name, but I think one of the more well-known retro game collecting youtubers has a problem. I watched one of his videos where he was talking about the sacrifices he had made for his collection, and it was things like foregoing vacations etc. Then he explained how his wife and kids were behind him all the way, and I realized that meant that they had been forced to make those same sacrifices too. Basically, he's sacrificing his kid's childhood so that he can relive his own.

I feel like a collecting addiction is only an addiction at all when you're often taking losses as a result of being caught up or careless... Overpaying just to have it and add it to the collection, instead of being more patient for good deals or holding things and maintaining their condition. There a many many kinds of businesses that entirely function by investing in appreciating collectibles, it's what all the game stores do even some of the big chain ones. Retro games specifically are a bit of an odd case. The core aspect of what they are is not gated by the physical item, all of this stuff is EFFORTLESSLY downloaded, the entire pre-disc history of tens of thousands of games is like 20gb which takes less than 30 seconds, and basically all of it is easily emulated, better than the original console in most cases, with rare exceptions like the N-Gage. So IMO if you collect retro games, you should think of them entirely as collectors items, NOT as media to enjoy that you put extra weight and value on, its just the market value and that's it. As soon as you get into "well I really want to play/own that game", you justify overspending for zero gain (as you could have already played it) on top of the loss once you pass it on unless it had gained value in that time. IMO a good replacement for the excitement/dopamine of simply getting a new thing for the collection, can easily be replaced with the excitement of getting a really good deal, regardless of what it is you're collecting. Almost like reward of gambling, but where the input is purely your time searching until you find something good, which is a lot less risky than other forms where you're taking overt and substantial losses with each attempt. Or it's more like an IRL version of a game like Borderlands, you enjoy the exploration activity and sometimes a shiny item with great stats pops out of an enemy or a chest. Deal hunting will build the collection of items you really wanted much slower, it takes a lot more patience, but overall I think it's a much healthier and far less risky way to engage in these kinds of hobbies... and it even applies to digital modern gaming as well, where patience and smart decisions, rather than impulsive ones, are hugely beneficial in the long run even if you don't get to have everything you want the second you want it.

This was such a cool video Mort. I think deep down every one of us have asked ourselves some of these questions. After the last year and the health events I have unfortunately went through the piece where you talked about what happens when all of this is left to my family to deal with really hit home. The community aspect and the joy that it brings along with the hobby really is special and maybe that means you have a people addiction? Well done and thanks dude. 🤙🏻

I have this simple trick to better understand the effects somethings have on me: don't do it for a significant amount of time and see what happens. Do you want to know what gaming of game collecting does with you? Don't do it for a month and see how you respond. It can be an eye opener to see how life is without something. All the little things that are affected by a certain behaviour. Sometimes even one day can be enough. I decided to not use any screen technology for one day. It made me realise how much all the little distractions on my phone add up. And how we lost the ability to just be somewhere. Next day I deleted all social media apps from my phone. Never went back. The thought of stopping or limiting certain behaviour can be very scary or overwhelming, so just experimenting with scenarios and experiencing life without can be a very empowering thing.

This was great, thank you for taking the time to have this conversation and document it. I like to mix these kinds of videos in to help keep me more grounded and less in the clouds of collector fantasy land. One thought on the whole hot pink paint can thing... I heard something said that has really helped me to part with things: instead of saying "I'm keeping this just in case." change the statement to "I'm keeping this just for when..." and have a concrete reason for keeping said item. Like keeping old paint cans "just for when" I work on my next project a month from now, instead of "just in case" and there is no foreseeable reason to have that paint. If you can't reasonably complete the "just for when" statement, then it is safe to part with the item and get it again down the road if necessary. And maybe this is just common sense to most, but I figured if it helped me, maybe it will help someone else. Thanks again, Mort.

This is such a great way to begin my weeks holidays, winding down from the last work day of the week, and get to watch some Mort. This was a very informative and educational. Super interesting for sure. I feel what you say Mort, I'm in the same boat, the hunt is amazing, I'm at 4500-ish physical games across all the consoles I own, and not even counting the digital stuff. I know the odds of me EVER beating them all is very slim, but the hobby and collection is just super fun to me. I feel like I might , but the fact it brings me joy makes it seem okay to me. I love hunting and collecting, but also playing. So glad to see your family being supportive and embracing the garage being converted into the glorious game room you have. I feel I need help in a bunch of things in life, and this video has def got me thinking more and more. Thank you for such an amazing video, both you and Ramon. Always such exceptional content, and gets ya mind going on things. You truly are a gift to this community, thank you.

It was good to self reflect as I already did many times and will continue to, but also I think many people NEED to watch this, unfortunately many of ones I know dont speak english very well so I cant send them this video. But now I might bring up this conversation in the future with them. You can maybe ask yourself questions like: What happens if I don't buy this new game. Are there any games that I never play, if so, what happens if I sell them? Can I ignore gaming for a few weeks. How does it make me feel? Are the games becoming unmanageable (Taking over my living space)? Are game purchases pushing me into debt? Is there something important that I should be doing but game instead. etc, etc...

I often ask myself the same question. I try to justify it to myself as its an investment in some way. The other part for me, when i was younger i was addicted to alcohol and drugs and would sell my games and consoles to support my partying when i was broke, i can't even count how many times i sold everything. So now i rebuilt and bought everything i stole from myself tenfold when i was out of control partying, and thats my therapy through collecting. But i do keep it within reason and its contained to the appropriate space i have in my small home, but now i should quit buying because now i never sell anything because of my past history of being self destructive.

By the logic of anything you do more than 24 hours in a week it means we're all addicted to work, or more specifically our culture is. I actually couldn't agree more about that part though, a 24 hour work week sounds great to me. It'll give me time to spend on other interests & hobbies... With that said I can easily play 40 hours of games in a week when a game really pulls me in & I don't have a bunch of other obligations. I actually played more hours of Elden Ring at release than I worked during its first month, but it was an exception. Also on the topic of seeing a therapist, while I haven't seen one I've seen the benefits for friends & family. I firmly believe everyone should see a therapist & would benefit from it, despite not taking my own advice currently.

"It doesn't have to be an addiction for it to be a problem" ...that hits the bullseye in my opinion. I'm not a professional anything, just a regular guy, but I think if someone spends $6,000 on a videogame manual at the expense of any of the more important financial obligations in their life, there's a problem of some kind. Don't know what to call it, but it's not a good thing to be doing. And just a quick point I'd like to make about collecting from a former collector: many people debate whether collecting is hoarding, but in my humble opinion we are asking the wrong question. Does it even matter? As adults we have far less time to enjoy videogames than we used to. How much of that precious little time does collecting take up?

@@MortsGarage I actually agree that some genuine enjoyment can be found within collecting. My main concern with much of the collecting scene is that it's all a little... too much. People collecting too much, spending too much, etc.. and my mission is just to bring things down to Earth a little bit. Don't mean to sound like I'm hating on collecting, in appropriate amounts it can actually cultivate a small amount of happiness. Anyway, good talk! 👍

Truly loving the depth and lens your content is providing in the space, and can't wait to see what comes next! And don’t worry about that final diagnosis - SEGE is less than a month away…. P.S. - Also - +1 for team Theme Song! Give the people what we want!

Some Americans only have shopping as an outlet. Its either that or cars. When I lived in the USA you could go a couple of hours before you saw something different from malls, shops, gas stations, restaurants etc. So your obviously going to spend more of your spare time shopping more than anything else. The problem with gaming is the accumulation of titles vs how much you play them. Which is the worst ratio of any media. I am usually only 1 CD, 1 movie away from watching, listening to everything... but gaming, you can forget it. With titles at $5-$10 a piece you will accumulate too many to play.

"Anything you do more than 24 hours in a week is concerning." Then why are we all going to work and school for 40+ hours per week? That's the concerning part! I truly believe people would be less susceptible to becoming addicted to other things if we didn't live in a society that pushes for most of your waking time to be at work or school. We feel the need to cram in things we enjoy in our few hours of free time we get per day and that leads to unhealthy behaviors with the things we truly enjoy. It's a vicious cycle of people chasing enjoyment and the dopamine hit that goes along with it because the vast majority of people do not get that enjoyment for at least 8 hours of their day. I say this as someone who always enjoyed school and has a job that I like (for the most part).
