You kinda have to consider where the item has been before it changed hands...all that wear and tear, people are there to unload what they don't have the time to sell and put in extra work and time into cleaning, cost, listings online and shipping to buyers. People don't realize you don't get hits for sale on items instantly after posting to sites like eBay ...relist after relist...your inventory will sit. $25 is fine.

True. And the reseller might have gotten the game quite cheap for like a buck or a few and did not show morals too. Dont you think? I dont think that such seller sells it out of their own collection. Some even get items for free as people wanna clean out houses. Those pay for the clean up and the cleaner takes it to sell it instead of throwing into the garbage as it should be? I dont know how that works, but sounds like that :-) And if a seller would do HIS job, then he would go online and check prices and value and then decide what to do. A seller does not always have morals, you know. So why is it "your" job to educate others?

@@MortsGarage But I believe that all retro games, no matter what game it is... is only worth what you are willing to pay. I guess if they look poor you are free to notify the seller if it weighs heavily on your conscience. But I would just pay what they're asking for. One of those games I will never buy is Megaman 5 on NES because it's overpriced. I'm not willing to spend what price charting says it's worth.

@@MortsGarage so if it's a social moral service. Would you also let a filthy rich person know his game is underpriced? According to that logic you might also need to pull out your phone at a yard sale and look up the value of everything you buy. I have seen jrpglife give the seller additional money too which was nice. I probably would if I can afford it. But yeah I think this issue is equal to tipping your waiter 20% of your meal when there is no official standard law behind it. It's just up to you.

If I'm already getting a good deal, I'm not going to haggle. If it's priced under, that's on them. It goes the same the other way; if you end up overpaying for an item, they're not obligated to correct you. Of course, if you want to do deals with each other regularly it would be beneficial to both parties to be transparent. At the end of the day, it comes down to if you can live with your decisions.

I feel like you pretty much nailed it. Game vendor's and resellers should know their prices, but when you go to a yard sale and someone goes back in their home to pull out their old games and they tell you they don't know much about the value, I personally feel like the right thing to do is tell them. It happens with me all the time and being honest goes a long way. People get so caught up on getting the 100 dollar game for 5 bucks, when in reality if you are honest with them you could still probably get that 100 dollar game for 50. Still a great deal and you can walk away without feeling like a scumbag. Great topic of discussion!

I always hear collectors telling that "it is up to you how much you want to pay for something" when people ask for value of a game. So, if someone asks me at a yard sale how much I would pay for it, I would say 5 bucks. But nobody is asking me as there are no yard sales here 🙂
@StevoSupremo
@StevoSupremo Жыл бұрын
@@Slimer-kf6ss It regards to a yard sale or flea market, I totally agree that "its up to you how much you want to pay for something." If the price sticker on it says 25 and you don't want to pay 25 then you don't have to pay. Maybe you can even haggle and get it lowered to your buy price. That's awesome! But when someone goes inside and digs out a copy of Earthbound and says here I found this, but I don't know what its worth. This is the make or break point. Am I as the buyer going to lie and say, I don't know the value either, here's 5 bucks. Even if I value the game at only 5 bucks personally, its still a lie and for me lying is wrong. Some people are okay with lying, but I will always view it as wrong and deceitful. But if you went to that yard sale and saw Earthbound on the table with a sticker that said 5 bucks, I wouldn't have an issue at all if anyone bought it. At that point your not lying at all, its just a moral battle with yourself personally whether you want to tell them or not. If that makes sense haha. I'm actually really curious where you live to not be able to experience the glory of yard sales!

First off, I LOVE the Mr. Rodgers nod. One of my favorites as a kid, we need Fred Rodgers today. The honesty and morality in that is admirable. If that was a buddy or someone I worked with regularly, I'd tell them its underpriced for sure. For most people or places (especially at garage sales/flea markets) that individually price everything, its hard for me to justify doing it if they are looking to maximize profits at the same time. I would probably be nice to people that genuinely didn't know after giving me a price verbally.

Came across this while searching around for different takes on the ethicality of reselling and, although I don't have much interest in video games, this video has earned you my subscription : ) I have a tiny business reselling LEGO and this topic has been on my mind a lot recently as I've seen real hatred for resellers in the comment sections of various internet corners. I think it's so important to remain honest and to keep checking yourself when it comes to this kind of thing. Better to go home with a clean conscience then to leave with a great find and a heavy heart. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Value is highly complex. In negotiation, value has far more to do with the buyer and seller in a specific time and place than with the broader market. For that reason I’m ok with a sizable difference between yardsale, flea market, retail and online marketplace prices. The knowledge needed to arbitrage these prices is very specialized and we spend a lot of energy acquiring it. I usually choose not give it away to the sellers. In stead I often disclose that I resell, and make friends with them in the course of negotiation. Most are warm to the idea, some are even supportive, suggesting items for me to resell. But like you Mort, I will never browbeat a seller for prices. If we can’t reach a mutually acceptable agreement, I give a smile, wish them blessings and move on. No burning bridges here. I see all negotiations as potential win-wins, even if they’re delayed to a later date.
@MortsGarage
@MortsGarage Жыл бұрын
I like that idea of disclosing you're a reseller and then going from there. I've also done that before (that happens in the next hunting video actually) and it's been to mutual benefit. The seller had stuff sitting out for a couple months I knew my buyers would want. Glad to see your comments!

Awesome video and good talk. I believe if you run across a highly valuable item, you shouldn’t mind forking over a bit more just as a gesture of appreciation. Or simply ask the vendor if he’s aware of the value of a particular item. I wouldn’t feel compelled to do that on everything you buy though. Another question I ponder of the reselling community is this: if a game catches your eye, and you open the case to find two games inside, do you let the seller know? I’m thinking along the lines of thrift stores or Goodwill. It would feel a bit sleazy to me to take advantage of the already dirt cheap merchandise.

I like the tip method. Sometimes its easier to just hand them a bit of extra cash for a good deal, because I've seen sellers react to that hearing the real value not only increasing price to that, but upping it over. But if its a local shop that you like, I feel like repeatedly scalping deals is counter productive to keeping that shop successful and in business. Sure it nice to have a place you can go to nearby where you just consistently get good deals, and ultimately its the owner that needs to work toward their business succeeding, but help out your community man. I hate getting excited by a new shop opening only for it to fail for a myriad of reasons, so if the people running it are chill then ingratiate with them and support them as both a customer and community member.

This is how I'd handle it. A) if they didn't take the time to price things, that's not my problem. B ) if they got what they were asking and were happy with that, and I got a deal I was happy with, I call that a win/win and move on. C) if they have it priced and realize that it's misspriced and try to change the price as I go to pay, I'm going to set down everything I'm buying, walk, and never come back. It's just how I am. I can understand if you made a mistake and said hey I can't sell it that low, but I'll split the difference between what it's marked and what I want to actually sell it at. And that would make it work. But when they go "nah, that's not right" and charge full price and not offer any deal or even to haggle I'm done. And honestly it's pretty few and far between these days that this situation comes up. In fact I see a lot more overpriced stuff. Stuff marked at ebay asking prices instead of actual sold prices. Stuff priced according to pricing apps(ones that usually price higher than ebay asking prices). Finally if somebody asks what it's worth. And I know what it's worth, what the going rate is, or I can quickly get an ebay average sold price in a $5-10 variance range (like saying it's worth $15-20 or saying $20-30), I'll tell them. I'll even show them how to look it up on ebay. Look up sold listings for a month. And then how to weed it out to something in similar condition, and average it close to get a fair price range. And I'll do that because I had to learn too. If it was a friend I'm going to straight up tell them what it's worth and what I think they could sell it at and if I'd give that much for it. Completely above board honesty.

I see a lot of debate/hate online about resellers and honestly after checking out some of their online communities I totally get it, there are a lot of scummy people out there doing this who take advantage of people or lie. On the other hand however, I have chosen to take the path of openness and honesty with folks and it's working so well for me, I've landed huge commissions or even gotten deals just for being straight and honest with people, being a reseller is pretty fun, to me its like being a treasure hunter or one of those guys on Canadian/American pickers. That little Sonic pinball game is great; we have one that's in pretty rough shape (the plastic is badly yellowed). We like big boxes and cannot lie! There are enough sheet people in the world that we will always try to NOT fall in that camp. We've lost out on deals simply by doing so, but it's not about "scoring" as it is being a better person and not for the sake of reward. Lady Laci had a coworker offer to sell us a GBC and 4-5 games, one being Shantae, for $100. We told her we couldn't accept that because that game alone goes for so much more. She took our advice and sold the lot for well over $600 on Ebay. While we missed out on a stellar deal, doing the right thing ultimately helped this woman who recently had transmission issues that now, mostly, is covered thanks to getting the proper value of her set. It's simple. Be good and do good.

I think it's a case by case basis. An individual that's got a booth at a flea market, swap meet, or yard sale I'm far more likely to say something to them about their prices. That said - if you're paying the money to set up shop at a place to run it as a side hustle or a business, I honestly think it's your responsibility to make sure your prices are accurate. And if they're not, then it's fair game to pay the asking price and acquire the thing you want.

This video was perfectly executed, as usual! You already know that I agree with you on all accounts. Obviously garage sales are a sharp right turn away from swap meets, so relationships will rarely be established in Elisa and my experience. But I think people (maybe youtube viewers who might disagree) also discount how often sellers will say "that's fine, thanks for telling me this item is worth more, but I'll honor the sticker price." Respect and integrity goes both ways. This happens to us at garage sales all of the time 😊

@JRPGLife this is why I commented on your " Brought Grandma's Stash Video" because it made me uncomfortable. My point is offer a fair price for the item as you know it's value, the lady clearly didnt. I understand you need to make a profit but don't take advantage. She was happy because she didn't know better. Also you video clearly shows you made the offer, she didn't set the price. There's making a profit and ripping someone off. Sorry just my opinion but I generally like your video's.

I believe in the concept of property and the free market. If someone owns something, it's their "property" and they can do with it as they please. They could give it away or ask a million dollars for it. As for the buyer, their money is also their property and they can do with it as they wish just like the seller. If any two people trade something, in this case goods for money, I'm assuming they are both adults and capable of making their own decisions about what they wish to do with THEIR property. This is what we call the "free market". People buy and sell things either higher or lower than the market value all the time but it's their own choice to make when they consent to the transaction. If someone sells their property it is THEY who choose the selling price so it's up to them to use whatever criteria the wish to come up with the price. There is nothing inherently wrong with any aspect of property or the free market and is the basis upon which modern society works.

Regardless the type of seller, as a seller it’s their responsibility to do their research on the price of something. I don’t pay market value on much of anything for my collection because I can’t afford to put much money into it. I’m not a reseller and I have a “normal” job. Sometimes when I find something for a good deal I might sell or trade it off but I’m not out trying to make a ton of money. If it’s a friend or something like a swap meet where I want to build a relationship to be able to get other deals then if it’s crazily underpriced I would probably say something but again it’s really up to them to determine what they’re willing to sell it for. As my dad always said “something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it”

If it is a reseller store it is on them to price the item correctly. If it is a garage sale and it is a game priced at $2 dollar that is worth $100. I will most the time pay the $2 and be stoked. There is an exception to the rule for me, if someone asks what is this worth, I will answer honestly and then follow up 'this is what i am willing to pay'. I have paid more than the asking price in op/thrift shops if they have greatly under priced an item as it is for charity but this rarely happens now a days.

It depends on the place tbh. If I see it’s a yard sale and it’s a kid selling or a old granny selling I’ll tell them, usually the older people say thanks and give it for the price it was originally. But if it’s a reseller I usually don’t mention it cos that’s their job to know what’s the price of their merch

Great video! And this is why i follow you. Love the honesty and integrity and always end up learning something new. I as a collector would have to say if its a reseller I pay asking price and dont try to haggle as more than likely theyve got overhead. I like the price? I pay. If not move on. My line is drawn where its a person who I can tell genuinely does not know proper pricing like at yard sales. There i try and be fair about it. Yes it may cost me more but i feel good inside that i didnt "steal" from someone.
@MortsGarage

I appreciate your comment! I think a yard sale is only slightly different for me. I’d ask first what they’re selling the item for then go from there. If it’s a bargain, I’ll take it. If they ask me how the stuff is worth, I’ll tell them. But in all cases there’s risk including the inability to return something that’s broken

I've been a collector of sneakers, video games, and other collectibles, I've also resold and made money off stuff like that. If someone put something out for a specified item, that's what I pay. "resell" price is only based on what people are willing to pay. If the person selling isn't a collector or reseller, to them they already valued that item. Same with the sneaker game. Shoe retails for $170, it might be limited or a collab shoe, people are willing top pay $500+. But it still was only a $170 shoe and that's all some people see; same with older games. So I have no moral dilemma buying things if peeopld dont value them the same as I.

New series called …”Morts Morality Moments” lol But seriously, I base it on on potential value, I wouldn’t give someone $20 for a CIB Samson, but I also wouldn’t go as high as full market value. I think at a certain point in buying you have to judge for yourself on “how much is too much of a good profit”. But there’s also things like bulk buying and with that I have to make sure I’m leaving room for my sales and over head and whatnot. Single item things are much easier to be friendly about because you know the value in the one single item. But ultimately it’s like you said. Everyone has their own outlook on the market Thank you for the great content

I think for me it depends on the situation. If I find a game or something profitable at a garage sale or a flea market or somewhere else and the person tells me a price right away, i'll go with that price. But if someone is selling it and says "make me an offer" I will always shoot for either market price or no less than $5 below. It also is dependent on the item and how much they are selling it compared to its worth.

If someone has something I want for less than I would have been happy to pay for it, then that raises my balk price for everything else they're selling. Like if they have games at $10 a piece and I find a couple I would happily have paid $15 or $20 for then I'm not going to haggle down or pass on the $5 games they also marked at $10. The difference between what I would have paid and the price they put on it is essentially playing with house money.

For someone who is going to resell the game, or sell it eventually, giving a reseller a descent price is the right way to go. However, I will never sell my games, and I'm also disabled so getting the lowest price is a win-win. I've been collecting since 1997 and playing since 1978, so when I say I'm never selling, you can bet I'm NEVER going to sell. At this moment, I have close to 13,500 games, 350+ consoles and 44 complete libraries, and this amount will only grow larger with time. Thus my situation is very different even for those who do have fairly large collections because 99.9% of all collectors resell to fund their games, which is something I don't do. Futhermore, I have a home museum that is open to the public, and I don't charge anything for visitors to view and even play many of the games.
