In 1965, after boot camp at Paris Island and infantry training at Camp Geiger, I was sent to Basic Electronics School which at the time was in San Diego, followed by Ground Radio Repair. My MOS was 2841. The total classes lasted 10 months. That MOS kept me out of Vietnam. BTW, back in my day there was no such thing as a contract. We raised our hand and swore to defend the Constitution...etc, then we went wherever they sent us.

When I was in, during the early 2000s, I was an 0151 Administration Clerk (which is now currently, MOS 0111). During my last year, I was able to fill a Billet of a 7041 Aviation Operations Specialist in my unit, and I really enjoyed that job of scheduling Marine Corps aircraft. I was also able to fly with the squadron as an enlisted aircrewman. I always highly recommend enlistees look into Aviation Operations and/or enlisted aircrew as an MOS, because I really enjoyed both!

Hi Clayton, as always good video. Just to clear out a confusion, what jobs do Marines who go out on the field or go on combat missions have? Do they have a separate jobs specifically related to fights or Marines with any job will be called upon for missions or combat?
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty broad question since almost all MOSs have a chance of actually going out into the field. I'm guessing that what you're thinking of is called Combat Arms which consists of infantry, artillery, and armor; these 3 MOSs will spend the most time out in the field since there job revolves specifically around combat. Other MOSs that are attached to combat arms units can also go out in to the field about as much in order to support them, people who are in motor T, and comm especially, in fact one of the comm MOSs is the only non-03 MOS allowed to try out for Recon. However, even non-Combat Arms units might spend a lot of time in the field and potentially see combat because of the nature of their jobs, engineers are a good example of this and even some air wing units; when I was in I was a 7242 Direct Air Support Operator and I'd go out into the field fairly often, not into direct combat but not that from where the front line would either.

Yes, it's called being a "range coach." Basically, it's a secondary job that you can pick up. So if you went into a job in the armory, you could then earn your way as a range coach later on. It would take a little while for sure, but it's a chill job.

I agree, it's all up to you although what's available to you at any given time is dependent on what schools are picking up around the time that you would finish boot camp and MCT. You also have to keep in mind that what MOS you can choose is also dependent on how well you do on the ASVB, the better you score on it the better your choices.

Riceball01 hey i got a 45 on my asvab and my recruiter recommended reserves just so i can get my mos and get boot camp done and over with . is this a bad idea?
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want. Going Reserves isn't necessarily a bad thing, esp. if you want to go to college at the same time, the Reserves is perfect for that. It really comes down to this, do you think you want to be a Marine full time, as you job? Or do you want to be Marine but want to go to college and pursue a civilian career at the same time or possibly become a Marine officer? Don't let your recruiter pressure you one way or the other, decide for yourself what you want and stick with it, your recruiter can't tell you know and you'll still become a Marine either way.
@mannyjohn85708 жыл бұрын
Riceball01 I will do anything to become a Marine. I scored 45 on asvab and was my second chance if i fail the 3rd time i wait 6 months and my recruiter said best thing to do is just go reserves but would i be able to become a enlisted officer instead of reserves?

Once you reach your black belt in Marine Corps Martial Arts, you can go through a course to become an instructor. You'd most likely teach Marines in the morning, during lunch, or after work. The closest thing to an actual 'Martial Arts MOS' would be a MCMAP Recruit Instructor at a recruiting depot, but I think you need a minimum of 4 years in to do that.

Adrenaline Junkie Good luck getting into a tank battalion. There are only two of them. If you get a good score on your EST then you have a good chance of getting a good score on your PICAT/ASVAB, and therefore a semi good chance of your MOS or MOS field. So if you don't get 1812, then you may get at least an MOS in the 18xx field.

@allensaunders92627 жыл бұрын
Adrenaline Junkie Well that's not how it works bro. You can be confident as hell for any job, but the Corps doesn't guarantee jobs, only job fields. If you get a GT score of 90 and there is a slot for the 18xx MOS field on the week you ship (your recruiter can explain that), then you have a chance at 1812. Only a certain amount of slots are opened for each type of MOS. For example with mine, I ship next June, there will be 4 slots opened for the CE MOS field and because I'm a rising senior I get a 410 and will get a MOS 18xx contract. I want Armor too.

I'm considering joining up as an ESG (Embassy Security). This MOS is pretty hard to find a ton of information on. Anyone know of any collateral duties that you have to do? What about morale and job satisfaction? I appreciate the help, thank you.

+Larry Sanders You can be an 0331 machine gunner, then as a B billet, you can send in a package for drill instructor. However, if you want to go as a MP(5811) You would have to lat move to 0331, which isn't always simple.

mmmmm, yes and no. You'll probably get bounced around to different stations, but they are not lavish by any means. Take Guantanamo for example

ClaytonFilpo What is a sub MOS? Is it a second choice if your first choice fails, or is it something you can do in addition to your MOS? If the second one is correct, does it have to be within the same field?
@claytonfilpo8 жыл бұрын
Best way to explain it is this: There's Infantry, right? But then there's a BUNCH of MOS's that make up Infantry. So when you contract, it'll say infantry. BUT, when you get to school, you'll have to choose between different Infantry jobs. If you fail, there's no telling where they'll re-class you. Could be infantry, but it could not.

What's your mos number
@claytonfilpo8 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. So deployments depend on where you're stationed. You can expect to be deployed on a MEU on your first enlistment (at least once). Once you hit your year mark, you'll be making about $2,200 a month (i'd ballpark. You'll probably be a lance cpl by that point.)

Hey Clayton. I'm looking to go into ordnance. Can I get a specific MOS such as 2111? Or am I only guaranteed to get any MOS in the field of ordnance?
@kennethgoodman6338 жыл бұрын
My recruiter already told me that he couldn't get me just 2111. Said he could get me small arms tech, machinist, or electro optics repairer on the contract. Which I would be happy with. Could they end up sticking me in a different MOS under ordnance? Or would I be guaranteed to end up in one of those three if that's how it written? Thanks and sorry if that's confusing.
@claytonfilpo8 жыл бұрын
In jobs like that, you can get promised a position within the field, but it wouldn't be until the end of boot camp that you find out the exact job you'll have within the field. If that makes sense.

Just curious, why does your job you have in the marine corps have to translate into the civ world. I mean I want to be 0311.
@johnmarist2610 жыл бұрын
It doesn't HAVE to, but it is very smart to do so. On your resume are you going to tell them you drove AAV's and crushed stuff when you are applying for a taxi driver or bus driver?
@johnmarist2610 жыл бұрын
All I'm saying (and Filpo too) it's good to get technical skills that translate to the civilian world so you get good job experience.
@claytonfilpo10 жыл бұрын
World War Tanks Everyone and their brother wants to be an 0311 when they first sign up. Enlisting in a different MOS allows you to pick up skills and trades that set you up for a job after the military. When you get out as an 03xx, employers aren't exactly looking for "machine gunner" on the resume. I have learned video editing, broadcasting, photography, writing, and social media management since I've joined.

Clayton, was it hard becoming a combat correspondent? I heard it is a very small MOS, which leads me to believe that it has high standards.
@claytonfilpo7 жыл бұрын
It is a very small mos, yes. Also, you have to do decent on the asvab. I wouldn't say it's difficult to get into, but if you're willing to wait for a spot to open up it is well worth it.
@daltonater12127 жыл бұрын
ClaytonFilpo I got a 87 on the ASVAB, would I be eligible? How long did you have to wait to get in? Did it prepare you for lucrative jobs after the marines?

@@daltonater1212 Sorry for the late follow up. Public affairs is the second highest asvab score next to cryptological linguist. That being said, an 87 might actually be within the range to make the cut. (i believe you'd qualify). As far as jobs afterwards - it definitely set me up for a very exciting and lucrative career.
