The USMC 28XX MOS School, Why is it so Long?

MOS was to be Ground Radio Repair. Graduated PI November 75. A few things the recruiter didn’t let me know: The length of the school. No Leave till you get your MOS. Failure rate was 90%. Had 2 weeks to go and made a 69.9 on a test. The review board decided to change my MOS to 0811. And because I’d failed that school I was eligible for promotion till well after I got 0811.

Schooling is a lot better now ,I’m sure you would’ve passed with the technology now.

@ I had wanted Avionics but the recruiter said there was a 2 year wait. And there was a nice bonus for the ground radio repair. Don’t remember for sure how much but it was over $2k. Back then they didn’t need anymore 2841. They needed grunts and gun bunnies

Did you learn any programming in MOS school? If not, do you know any specific MOS in the 28 field that combines electronics + programming?

I think the 31 course is about 2 1/2 months, the VSat systems are definitely in-depth with the KA and X bans but I myself how no info on the school, I will say the V-Sat L is hell.

2887 is the artliiery electronics maintenance. They work on radars mainly

So they go to 28 school and deal with the artty libo rules for 6 months just to do a 59’s job?

So GRRC is the only additional schooling 2841 goes through? I’m at the schoolhouse right now and i’ve heard rumors that the schooling for 41’s is almost 13 months long!

Basic> MCT > SRC > AMAT > BEC > GRRC .. SRC and AMAT are holding platoons. For a 2841 you time in school can be from 7 months to 9 months but depending on the time of year you may be stuck in holding platoons longer then others (this is what causes some to be there for 14 month, like I was)

@@jarlhameson oh wow, i was in AMAT for around a month, and is it hard to pick up rank in this MOS? i’ve heard that too.

@williambrower7131 I made Cpl in 2 years. I know a guy that made Sgt in 3. 2841 is the easiest to rank up in, just keep up your fitness and care… you’ll rank up.

Im at 28 going to MCT soon, and trying to learn as much as I can, how many people are usually in a class for mosschool, and if im able to make it to top of the class, which of the MOS's would be best to pick if im looking for a good job/skillset after the marines?

Around 24 student per class, and honestly any 28XX is good after the Corp you’ll cross train and learn the other MOS’ in the fleet most likely. If you are top of you class listen to your instructors and ask them or go with your gut.

So usually 24 Marines, try your best on the test and PT that’s where the scores come from! You got it, you just have to care and push yourself!!

@@jarlhamesonI’m 28xx and I’m on Boot leave and I go to MCT Feb 13, should I buy a car at the schoolhouse or wait until the fleet?, and how else could I Get top of my class besides Test scores and PT? ( my pt scores are above average asf 22 3 mile, 21 pull ups, max plank) is there any other ways I could get top of my class? Also what do you mean by grapple?

So the fleet is much different depending on where you go. My life honestly is really cool. My shop is great and we get to learn. We are more so inside. Some places you can be outside in the field all the time or sitting in a chair all the time. Compared to MCT it’s great tho. I kinda just need my detail on where you’re going and stuff to give you a more straight forward answer

I recommend saving your money while in 29 don’t go spend a crap ton. Check fb marketplace for deals on stuff you might want before buying it new. If your instructor is Sgt moody tell him I said what’s up

@@jarlhameson by in the field do you mean working in the field and then coming back or sleeping in the field? Thank you for the response btw

@@hansvonderhorst1708 working on radar is a 5900s job and some times a 2887. As a 2841 you’ll work on radios , 2831 satellites, and 2847 computers and phones. When you hit the fleet typically you’ll work on all of them. But in the field I mean like In the forest or desert like outside practicing missions.

@@hansvonderhorst1708 it all depends on what unit you go to and what field op your unit runs sometimes you go back and sleep and others your 60 miles away sleeping outside.

I rolled through BEC in 86, sounds the same, was on BC status for like 3 months before going to Albany for TMDE but rocked out of the school and ended up in missiles. I wonder where they are sending the 2871s now. Spent 3 1/2 years on OKI (Schwab) actually loved it there.. Semper Fi

@@jarlhameson Yeah I've seen vids of Schwab, it's completely different now. I think the flat tops I was in are gone now, HQ 4th is somewhere else. I still see my old armory and the gun ramp but everything else is pretty foreign. On the up side the Quick Stop is still there. Quick stop 4 life!
