It's difficult to hear of all her insecurities and doubts, when she is so accomplished and such a beautiful dancer. I hope she will be able to enjoy all her success. The ballet world can be so harsh, but Joy has triumphed there. I hope she can see it as we do.

As a non dancer, I have found Joy absolutely inspirational and awesome. she has really accomplished some incredible things. Adapting to a strange culture and mastering the language in itself would have been enough. To master their ballet technique and then excell in it: yes, she deserves the highest praise. FEW Americans have showed such fearlessness and its good to see again!

I know you've heard this a thousand times, Joy, but.... you have absolutely the most amazing, beautiful face for a dancer. That profile, your smile, your huge dark eyes, your regal nose - the entire audience -- from those in the best seats to the people in the "nosebleed" gallery -- can actually SEE your expressions, and all the passion and emotion your expressions convey. Even if you weren't blessed with so much talent -- which of course you are -- a photo of your face could be in the dictionary next to "prima ballerina." I'll bet when you were much younger, still in the US, you took a lot of grief about your nose. I bet it wasn't until you were in Russia that you started hearing compliments, and even being envied your facial features (when they weren't busy enyvying your exquisite feet, flexibility and technique). Every time I enjoy seeing you dance (on KZbin, I haven't been close enough to a venue yet to see you in person), I can't help but take a moment to admire your face. Even when you are backstage, or taking class or warming up in baggy sweats, even standing still, simply marking to your headphone music, you look like a star. I know you've been struggling to find your rightful place in the ballet world. I hope you never lose sight of that old cliche, life is what happens when you're waiting for your dreams to come true. You are young, exquisitely trained, physically and mentally gifted, and hundreds of thousands of people know your name and what you do. Even if you never performed again, you'd have accomplished more than 99 percent of female ballet dancers. But to say that is silly. You are only just now entering your full potential as artist. Thank you for sharing your talent for all of us who find such joy in watching dance!

The most important thing has already happened for you when the Prima Ballerina you have admired since childhood said to you at a performance that included the honoring of your teacher that : "YOU ARE A PRIMA BALLERINA" NEED MORE BE SAID!!!!!! The problem with ice skating and ballet the judging is always subjective in many ways. When I was in swimming competition it was the clock that judged you a winner period no matter the form of the swimming stroke. Pay no attention to the results..No one can take your accomplishments away from you as you own them. As you said in an earlier vlogg that before your coming to the school as a teenager you were nothing and look what success you have had and much more in the future. You have a wonderful coach and you have a lot more to learn. Don't throw that away too quickly. It is obvious how much she loves you and has a lot more to teach you. Stay put for now and make a decision very carefully. You are Russian as it is in your being now and that is important. You are lucky to love two countries.

Thank you for the kind words. The profession of the ballet dancer is indeed really demanding for they have to put their whole lives on the line. We see it as our goal to share this with people, so that next time you're in the theatre, you could appreciate not only perfectly executed dance but also the work that goes into it. And there's no better example than Joy, she's a true fighter.

I wonder if Joy came back to America how she would go? What her career would be like. I wonder if the energy that overcoming the challenges posed by getting used to another culture, language and system of Ballet with its own set of expectations and demands, could be channeled into something different which might change things for her trajectory? Just a random thought. She doesn't present as a fourth to me. Rather someone with exceptional drive and determination which needs to work for her , not against her. I don't think she has lost her drive, I think there is a point at which drive will not get anyone past because those factors might not respond to drive.

@brookebyrne6615

yes, she fell off her pointe (fell off her shoe), lost the momentum of the turn and had to flat-foot it around for a revolution before regaining her pointe. At her level it's a big thing, it's kind of a rookie mistake. Not that it never happens, but it's always a bit of a shock to the highly trained dancer.

Joy, it sounds as if you have worked yourself mentally, into a tight negative downward spiral. You need to remember why you started to dance in the first place & lose yourself in emotion, on the stage. That is what brings the audiences, the judges, & other dancers to their feet. Look at NYCB Sara Mearns. She doesn't have the 'perfect' ballet body - her neck his too short. Despite this, her love of dance, her complete joy, tears, & any other emotions, come tumbling out of her, when she dances. She is so wonderful & so popular because she shows us her soul. I do have to wonder, though, how can you stand to exclusively do the Classics, over & over? Just hearing the same music, over & over, in a Russian ballet contest, bores me to tears. So many (most!) other Companies are adding NeoClassical, & more contemporary movements, in their ballets. Just take a look at NYCB's Rep & it will boggle your mind. Those dancers prepare for 3-5 ballets, every day! They don't have the time and energy for your level of nerves. Just check it out!

Kenzie Larsen her neck it Too short? Who says that? Because if you heard that from a self proclaimed "critic" then fudge off. Even if she was a giraffe if she didn't have a talent she would never be popular. Maria kotchetkova is also very short but she is the best dancer around. 🖕🏼

Yes, yes, of course, OK, but.....Russian ballet companies, Bolshoi especifically, have something special: a tradition, a History behind, an unmistikable magic, "it"....Joy know that, and want to be part of that. For dancing Ballanchine she always will have time.
@madison2074
@madison2074 5 жыл бұрын
Sara Mearns is not trying to dance for a Russian Company. She dances for NYCB. A company more known for their contemporary repertoire than their classical. And Balanchine. I despise their style and would much rather see ABT perform. I'm sure Joy would feel the same. While yes Sara may be happier and more carefree but Joy is in a COMPLETELY different set of circumstances and the two cannot be compared. I mean look at Svetlana. Very reserved, critics herself constantly and is so passionate about ballet. Some may call it being obsessive but what true artist isnt? The greats in any creative outlet never look at things in normal ways.

I think it’s the age that Russians start. They also leave their parents and enter into a school where you don’t get a participation trophy just for showing up. Not getting a participation trophy and emotionally coddled helps the mental focus and drive of the Russian kids learning ballet. I think the 7 years helped in Russia, but she’s still kinda meh. I wouldn’t pay to see her perform.
