Good video, but a small correction. Freewheeling current doesn't go back to voltage source. it is dissipated in the diode and the inductor.

@msds1502 You mixed up current and power. Active / passive devices does not dissipate electric current. If they do, they spoil Kirchhoff's law.

For an inductive load turning on and off, does the voltage back feed through the free wheel diode through the inductive load, and not back to the power source? I am using a PWM with adjustable duty cycle at about 20,000 to 22,000 CPS to be outside the audio range. I want to power 4 PMDC motors at 36 V 36 A each, 144 A total at full load. I had a bad heart attack causing low blood flow to the brain wrecking my memory. Fortunately, I still remember the characteristics of an expanding and contracting field around an inductor. Am I correct to think the back feed spike voltage can be 4 times the applied voltage? Would a capacitor in parallel with the fly back diode be helpful? I cannot remember the frequency threshold for the need of a Shottky fast acting diode for the free wheel/fly back diode. Would a capacitor size be based on frequency or motor ampere? I was also told the ampere rating of the MosFETS is what current can flow continuous through each MosFET. I have difficulty wrapping my brain around 120 A continuous through a TO-220 package, even with a huge heat sink. Would this be possible to push 120 A through one MosFET rated at 120 A, or should I use 3 MosFETS paralleled for each 36 A motor? I prefer to be under rated for ampere, than over rated and burn MosFETs.

Thank you for the video, I want to make some DC-DC converters but I'm worried that voltage spikes will destroy my Mosfet.

You can use snubber circuits. We will cover those in future videos!!

Is the flyback diode recovery current spike and excessive drain to source voltage with IRF520 MOSFET a problem in fast (milliseconds at 90% duty cycle) switching of a 15k resistance, 12 volt solenoid? If so, how do we correct this?
