The Church performing Reptile live at Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 17 December 2011
On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world's most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the '80s and '90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics' imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.
From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.
Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review -- "a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock". In the USA Rolling Stone commented, "the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world's leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as "a powerful, progressive force in rock music", playing "the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise" and have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including "Best guitar band on Earth", "Sonic perfection", "Sounds that caress the senses". "A masterpiece of stealth".

Always love the precision and economy of this composition - they don't need to riff or improvise because each and every note has its place and none are superfluous. Like so many of theirs, actually. Hugely unappreciated band.

When I was 17 I saw this band for the first time. August 1988. I got a tshirt that had “Too dangerous to keep..too feeble to let go” printed on it. I already had “Starfish” and two others , loved the music, and “Reptile” premiered on MTV a month later. Good times. Almost 50 now.

The beauty of art is that once you discover an artist (or in this case, a band) you make it your own with the freshness of when they had just released their work. For me this is the case with The Church. I've only discovered them 2 weeks ago and I just listened to Starfish an hour ago. A delightful album.

You'll tend to find that with the truly great performers, such as Jeff Buckley, The Church, The Chameleons, The Smiths, that the crowds don't dance all that much. They're admiring watching something great occur, and drinking in every moment. Personally I think dancing is for the less appreciative ones.

I love the Church. Always have. Great guitar duo. But I always thought they played too loud live. So loud it often became wishy washy. I don't know whether that's how they wanted it or whether the dude at the mixing desk was deaf. That's probably a little blasphemous, particularly as I'm a gigging guitarist. But that's my thoughts. I did a gig at Penrith Leagues, Evan Theatre, night after the Church supported the pretenders. I asked the resident sound guy how the Church were. 'Way too loud'. Anyway I still love em and Milky Way is still my all time favourite song.

I've seen them a few times down through the years. They were loud sometimes, depended where they played. In 1991 I saw Motorhead play, I was deaf for 3 days. After that, I never thought any band was too loud. Loud is fine if the PA gear is built for it and and sound guys know what they are doing. Nothing worse than a band trying to exceed the SPL limits of a PA system, which often happens in clubs and smaller venues. I'm seeing them again in a months time in Sydney. Hopefully it's loud! LOL

andygasson, Hey mate, I saw The Church last Sat at The Factory, I thought they were really good, but i cant put my finger on why they were not awesome. I liked alot about the gig, with SK singing his ass off, Ian Haug was great and Jeffery Cain in background was a highlight for me. I thought Peter Koppes phoned his performance in. Tim on drums was solid. I love his percussion. Did you see the gig mate, how did you rate it. cheers mate

tony montana I was at that show too. First time I've seen them since 2002 I think. They definitely took a couple of songs to warm up, I thought the longer they played the better they were getting. That version of Tantalised with the long intro was f-ing epic, and they were just nailing it during the encores. They're definitely tighter than I remember too. Maybe something is missing with Marty gone, but I wouldn't say it was better or worse, just different. I think Ian fits well in the band, and the creative direction has definitely improved with him there, and the overall discipline of the band is better too I think. Just my 2c. I really enjoyed the show overall, I saw Anathema at the Metro the night before and that was f-ing brilliant, I thought the Church were going to struggle to compete with that but I didn't come away disappointed. Cheers.

Lol nothing like the "MOSH CAM" logo plastered on this sit-down venue. Really enjoyed the song and live cut here...The band was good. But the singer should have quit smoking 30 years ago because there's no longevity of breath there. I'll stick with the 80's track. I would have *loved* this if it hadn't been marred by the vocals.
