Over the past few years, since Moskvarium's three wild captured young transient orcas have been put on display, a concerning amount of behaviors ranging from aggressive to stereotypic (aka zoochosis) have been filmed by visitors.

Honestly as a kid I had my fill of marine life just watching Animal Planet. Sadly, the nature documentaries that Animal Planet aren't really a thing anymore, and it's sort of just turned into Human Planet. 'Surprisingly Human' really is the emphasis now. I know that most kids do/did not take interest in stuff like Animal Planet, but really it used to be an amazing outlet for beginner information into the world of Zoology. It's sad that people take their kids to places like Sea World to experience marine life when it's just a lot cheaper to show them a nature documentary, where the animals are in their natural habitat. I was about 16 or 17 when my dad took my brother and I, including his family, to Sea World. And I've got to be honest it may have been the saddest conditions for the marine life that I've ever seen for publicly kept captive animals. Even my youngest (half) sister who was like 9 at the time was questioning it. About 70% or more of the Orcas had depression (you can tell because they'll have folded flippers, the others were obviously younger) and it was well over 100 degrees that day, it was summer in Texas so that water was extremely warm. There was no quiet either, and most of the animals did shows 3-5 times a day. A person in this situation would have gone insane staying in those conditions for more then a week. Some of these animals live decades in these small enclosures. It's sort of insane that it's taken so many documentaries and footage to show the cruelty that's been inflicted on these animals, for people to finally notice in mass.

I'm so glad I was right when I was a 6 yr old and had an orca incounter at SeaWorld I thought I was going to enjoy imy photo with an Orca. Before the show they were letting people take pictures with an orca and , when I was almost coming up 4 my picture there was about 2 or 3 kids ahead of me, I saw the eyes of the orca and it looked so sad and lifeless like it had given up. I swear on my life I sometimes think we telepathically communicated , if not then I was a very empathetic or brilliant child. When I saw how unhappy it looked the second I felt guilty for being in line and thought in my head" It's sad, it doesn't like to do this" it perked up and directly looked at me like it heard my thoughts and stared me in the eyes. It stared like it was desperate to communicate with someone who understood it ,and the words " can u help me!?Was what I saw in its eyes , felt in my heart, and heard in my head . I started crying and told my uncle I didn't want to do this anymore. They thought I was scared but , I asked the trainer how come it looks so sad? He said it's not sad ,he's just knows to remain calm .I still refused a photo with it and as we walked away ,I saw the orca slump like it hoped I was going to save it but I didn't. I always assumed I read way too much into that situation, and the orca was just fine, but then blackfish came out 35 yrs.later and that incident flooded back to me and it made me collapse to my knees, break down and cry. What if I didn't read too much into that encounter? That would mean I failed that Orca.I truly believe it did pick up on my feelings and it really was begging for my help. I just don't understand how I at 6 yrs old was able to see how wrong SeaWorld was and how depressed and unhappy the orca was back in 86 yet grown ass adults 40 years later, are still just obliviously ignorant to the cruelty behind it. Either I was a brilliant child or the adults are Really fucking stupid, and I'm FAR FROM brilliant,in case my grammar didn't give that away.

Hot dogs. Darts. That’s why we want to see the whale. To ruin there day. Or really bother them. Even just for a moment. And that’s all we can do. God bless ❤️ 💕 ☮️

They have a matriarch based social system that is very tight knit. You really have no idea how killer whale society work do you? Yes humans are apex predators as well, but I dont go around begging for food lol. Humans have evolved to shape the world around us to fit our needs and wants. We no longer have the need to hunt for survival when we have domesticated livestock to fill that need. And your lame attempt at insulting me is pretty funny. I do both actually. Most of them are kids who don't understand =/ But parents should explain instead of just taking them and stupidly laughing. There are better ways to show kids those animals up close. Even the captive bred ones could be put in a better environment (sea pens, puzzle toys). Get a sea pen with a tunnel under it. Get the orcas to simulate hunt close by. People will get to see them live while they're rehabbed back into the wild (if possible).

Being forced to live in a sterile environment that doesnt look or sound anything like your ocean home is frightening! Being forced to perform everyday for food that you would never eat in the wild, being deprived of sensory and cultural development is abusive!!! Animals with jobs are like service dogs, police and rescue dogs. These are highly intelligent, complex beings that were violently taken from their world to be sold and used as slaves. I dont see how anyone with compassion or intelligence would see this as anything other than abusive and cruel.

@@SimonWoodburyForget What? Imprisonment and adoption are NOT the same thing at all. Comparing the free will of humans to these captive orcas (who have lost that freedom) is a pretty unfair comparison. We have the freedom to leave a job if we want, we have the option to not pay taxes. These captive killer whales are trapped in that marine park. They are at the mercy and whim of the trainers' every demand. They have no escape and they have no ability or freedom to make their own choices. Retruning wild caught animals back to nature is VERY much possible and it should be done with these wild caught killer whales! Saying that its not possible isnt true at all. Sentencing these animals to a lifetime of suffering, frusteration and death is pretty unfair and selfish and shows that you dont really understand the issue at all. There have been many successful reintroduction of wild caught captive cetaceans back into the wild. These orcas are not an exception. They havent been in captivity that long and it wouldn't be unreasonable to rehabilitate and release them to their pods. Ending the capture and display of these intelligent and highly complex animals is something that needs to end. They dont adapt well to captivity and these aggressive behaviors WILL get worse and someone Will end up getting hurt or killed.

@@SimonWoodburyForget exactly. If your( orca) is alone( no whales that they know) and have no interaction but concrete walls, it drives them insane. And let me tell you a story. When they capture young orcas, the family resists so they kill them, open their stomachs, and fill them with rocks so that they will sink. And not to mention the young orca is forced to watch all this happen without a choice. When they are taken, they are TAKEN. They have no choice. Humans have the right to do anything. And yes people can just quit their jobs, but you see orcas are taken many miles away from their home and since they can only swim they can't just get up and walk out of the tank. So yeah it is abuse and they have no choice at all!

And here's a fact, orcas have the second largest brain of all mammals. Think small children who want to see a real orca and not something that’s just one film. Before I went to SeaWorld and saw orcas for the first time in the real world, it was fantastic. Seeing how graceful they moved, their wonderful markings, their beautiful calls, it was magical. However, now that I’m older, the magic turned out to be a lie. I despise SeaWorld now, but they already got what they wanted. They essentially have those who truly wish to see these animals come to see them here because it’s easier and more well known.

I'm afraid, there will be no movie. I can't get inside the whale prison, because you have to get clearance, and in that department, I get zero help from animal right activists. Colleagues in Russia ignore me, because they are busy with their own affairs. It seems that I am the only lazy bum, who comes home after work and late at night produces videos about protests against whale prison from different cities in Russia. I can't get through to Jean-Michel Cousteu, I can't get through to Ingrid Visser. So I can't get to the ultimate place I need to be. Not to speak about the fact that I have to finance the whole production from my own pocket. But it's fine - I kinda got used to the idea that movies about nature are almost non existent in Russia. What really bugs me is that I seem to be fighting my own little war with everyone - animal rights activists included. I was trying to find support for a movie about russian orcas for three years - since I made a short documentary about biologists who study orcas at Kamchatka. What people don’t seem to understand is that the “huge” slideout is made that big on purpose. It’s a stage made to accommodate many different sizes of animals because they constantly rotate the animals in and out of the show pool. The holding tanks are in the back and are much smaller. The actual slide outs are the tiny ones close to the stands, made when these orcas were calves, so they no longer fit. It seemed like Nord (the bull) was the major instigator at first, but it looks like Narnia and Juliet are equally disruptive. I’d be incredibly surprised if either one of the whales or one of the trainers doesn’t get killed in the near future. There’s no quick exit for the humans and no exit at all for the whales.

StarShadow that’s not true, for a start seaworld orcas (except 3) were all born in captivity, they don’t know any different and their family is the same orcas they grew up with in the tanks, these orcas were wild caught and stolen from their family IN 2012/13 WHICH is unacceptable as we now know how important family is to the killer whale and are much more educated on them thanks to science study’s (which SeaWorld take part in with their orcas) Seaworlds orcas aren’t mistreated either, it’s not no trick no food, it’s TREATS! Each orca at SeaWorld has a bucket with their name on it, the buckets they use for shows are only for TREATS meaning the fish used in shows are treats for the animal. For example there’s KEET the orca, if keet isn’t performing he will be given his daily diet of fish in a bucket that will be named “KEET” if he’s in a show and was in the slideout for example his TREATS would be coming from the bucket with the name “S/O” which stands for yep you guessed it, SLIDE OUT!

It's like voting. If people refuse to come see the silly tricks and instead demand better conditions (sea pens, puzzle toys/problem solving for food, etc) it's going to happen. I don’t understand why the back stage is so huge. There is no need for it, and it’s obvious that they would get easily stranded on it and struggle to get back in the water. Not only a huge hazard to the poor whales, but also the trainers as well, they could easily get tripped by one of the whales thrashing their tails back and fourth. Not to mention how easily the orcas could injure themselves as well on that hard surface. I wish they would remodel the stage, not only would it minimize and hopefully prevent this kind of stranding, but it would also look much better theatrically (since that seems to be all that they are concerned about anyways).
