My heart goes out to your son and everyone else serving as firefighters or helping in other ways. I'm in New Zealand and as you no doubt know, every year we and Australia, the USA, and Canada move teams around between us to fight these massive fires. The camaraderie and support we feel from other countries is important. When people are lost in any of these countries we all feel it. Our teams also gain valuable experience to bring home and share with others. Our fires are smaller than yours so there is less opportunity here for the specialised skills training. Stay safe everyone.

Yep, I live in the MV area west of the fire. We have a 100ft clearing all around our hillside house but we have a pine farther down the mountain in distress that was right in our sight line. Rather than wait for it to die and then try to get it out of the terrain you spoke of, I opted to get some more water to it. Cutting a path (with a chainsaw) to the area was only about 120 feet but it took me over two hours to get through the Poison Oak vines, Saplings, Toyan and Manzanita to get a hose down there. Climbing back up with the chainsaw was no easy feat even with a then walk-able access. So far, the tree is holding on.

On the IR footage, they have some system overlying roads in real time as the camera is moving. In terrain like that, that must be a 3d topological model that is being moved to align with the camera, which is amazing. I hope that view of spotting and activity helps the crews on the ground and that they're able to stay safe in the extreme heat!
@jacksons_drones2 жыл бұрын
Are you a sure its not just the increased quality in Ir camera technology?
@charmandeross2 жыл бұрын
The FIRIS data is sent back to UCSD for post processing with a fancy computer. That generates geospatial data in a format that can be overlaid on maps easily, and predicts fire spread potential. Id assume at that point the road overlay is added in. Not super familiar with the technology, but it sure is cool.
@HiddenWindshield2 жыл бұрын
@@jacksons_drones Yes, you can see that the roads jiggle slightly as the camera pans around. Also, it would be pretty unlikely for the fire to spell out "Michigan Bluff Road" in English text (5:46).

When I was a college kid back in the old days we would sometimes go to that area to swim and be lazy. If you've never been there the American River Canyon is, like many of the west Sierra river canyons, taylor made for fire. Steep, heavy fuel, and like Juan said when the wind takes off the fire burns like running up a funnel. The point of origin, right next to a road, leads this old man to be suspicious as heck as to the cause. Think of the Tanker Pilot, Abbie, and her mates trying to put those aircraft 150 ft off the deck over the fire to drop the retardant, and the level of respect and admiration for them is over the top. I hope all of us reading who watch Juan's' excellent reporting will hold a kind thought for, or if you are so motivated, say a prayer for these people and the ground firefighters they support as once again they do their dangerous work.

The KCRA weather folks stated that a dissipating thunderstorm created the wind event that drove the rapid growth of the fire last night. The heat is certainly a problem, but as you noted it's the winds that really drive these things. Hopefully CalFire can get this thing under control before the weekend, when it's possible the remnants of Hurricane Kay bring more wind and thunderstorm potential to the Sierras.

Thank you, Juan, as always. Factual, to the point and factual. I imagine the local OES and Fire PIOs look at your coverage before they go "live at 11." In my area, the official sources would not have any public displays like yours until maybe the next day briefings. Or, maybe it is just our local news outlets ignore available official information (like the "nearly real time" infrared mapping) in favor of human interest interviews with sobbing evacuees and looping footage of fire crews driving by. I have been in my house all day, doing work on a friend's bass. When I helped him outside with it at about 7 p.m., I was pretty surprised at the degree of smoke! It smelled like the fire was very close. The sky was that eerie orange color that we know well in this area when smoke obscures the Sun. Now, I know a lot more about it, because the news sources were abysmal in their coverage. Because of this video. Let's hope the fire can be contained soon.

My son has a house in Lake Wildwood . I just don’t understand why our government can afford to send 50 Billion in unaccountable funds to another country . And yet,we can’t seem to be able to set up and have an national air force of a few hundred or more large fire retardant aircraft to attack and control these fires that can and have burn down whole towns and take many lives . There are hundreds of used jets parked in our deserts that could be converted for this purpose. These planes could fight fires on a national and international level.

@@HVM_fi death and terrible things began in this world because of Adam’s sin… 1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. We are responsible for all the terrible things that happen to us. If we had never sinned we would still be in paradise with God today but… Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; With a sin violation of the absolute law comes the absolute need for justice, condemnation and punishment…both temporal and eternal in hell. God’s justice and righteousness demands such…he cannot violate his own law. We continue to sin and he is forced to thus allow evil to happen to us for justice sake… Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Romans 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Romans 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Romans 3:14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Romans 3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: Romans 3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: Romans 3:17 And the way of peace have they not known: Romans 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. But praise God he loved us so much that he was not willing to leave us without hope… John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. So bad things still happen but now through our savior Jesus Christ we have in his sacrifice a way to escape eternal death in hell and strength to endure the evils of this fallen world… Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Anyway, that is why evil things happen and that is why by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ we find both strength, hope and empathy enough to pray for and help others in their time of need. Amen.
