Mossberg 500

This Mossberg 500AB 12 Gauge is a pump action shotgun manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons in 1973. Introduced in 1960, all model 500s are based on the same basic concept designed by Carl Benson. Originally using a single action bar that was known to bind and even break, this was changed to dual action bars in 1970, following the expiration of Remington's patent on the double action bar design.
A single large locking lug is used to secure the breech. The magazine tube is located below the barrel, and is screwed into the receiver. The slide release is located to the left rear of the trigger guard, and the safety is located on the upper rear of the receiver (often called a "tang safety").
Dual action bars connect the fore-end to the bolt, and generous clearances between the steel action bars and their receiver channels reduce wear on the aluminium receiver while allowing the shotgun to function with the presence of dirt or debris. The Model 500's bolt locks into a recess located on the top of the steel barrel instead of the receiver itself, thus allowing the use of lightweight aluminum instead of steel. The trigger housing and safety button are made of plastic to reduce cost.

I have a 500A. It too has the duel action bars. It came with an 18.5" and 28" barrel. Great shotgun, has beautiful wood furniture. Paid $249 for it in 1999.

mossberg wasnt able to make dual action bars in first few years because remington patent. when it expired they went to dual ab and never went back

Funny how you can patent a design like that.......not the action bar itself but the NUMBER of them. Mossberg should have just added a third!

I believe the "A" denotes 12 gauge. I know someone with an "AT" , which was a 12 gauge Target model with a "C-LECT" choke.

Does it have a serial number? Had a similar one years ago police model could not figure the date of manufacture

Mine has a " Station- unit " num , designation. No serial number. Production was between 67-72 . On "Police Gun" designated M500ab's. They all have High Grade Black Walnut Stocks, Red recoil pad, black pistol cap , forearm has vertical only stripes for grip . Also white spacers on but pad and grip cap . Duel action bars and like this one a "Jewled " bolt . I think maybe the Police Moniker may be copyrighted. As of all shotguns labeled as Police +/ Riot Guns or either name alone , are not made by more than 1 company at any time according to everything I have read . Winchester started my making a " RIOT" model 1300 in 1973 with exactly the same specs . Before 67 ITHACA model 37 was offered as a "Police/Riot " model. It also has the same wood , trim , and 6 shot capacity. This " Slugger" was most likely produced after 72 . Probably from left over parts combined with new parts like wood and rifle sights. The wood on my police 500 is unfinished finely sanded and polished TIGHT grain Black Walnut. This Slugger doesn't compare in terms of wood. Interestingly my father had a Old Winchester side by side with 18.5" barrels high grade walnut Red Recoil pad with a black pistol grip and white spacers, it was made in 1921. So it seems to be a very old formula for peace keeping firearms.
