The war was over. But the grief wasn't. Thomas Ridley felt the pain of his lost companions. The cloud of regret engulfed him. He walked a few steps but stopped. Looked back at what he had lost. Being the only survivor. His heart had lost the beat. Memories flashed him like a beam. The more he moved towards home, the more he felt disheartened. He kept asking himself, Why didn't his friends listened to him? He knew that the only way was to wait. Unfortunately, his friends were too impatient. And death was certain. The sea was pretty rough. Thomas had been a stoic. And so, he never lost his sanity, patience and self control. But his friends never understood him. They made a joke out of him. And yet, he never stopped to support them.

Sergeant James was discharged from the military and sent back home to Minnesota after he lost his left leg. He spent the next twenty or so years traveling around the country and even returned to the spot in that small Belgian village where that 88 took his leg. He dedicated his life to studying social views on the war and even became a professor. He died in 1994. He was eighty. Pvt. Tommy Desola was wounded three times during the war but survived to return home to Philadelphia to continue his job at his family's Italian restaurant. His homecoming came to a somber end, however. When, in 1948, he shot a man in an argument over a back alley card game and was forced to flee the state. He lived out the rest of his life in Massachusetts, working as part of a fishing boat crew out of Gloucester. He loved the sea, and read extensively on sharks and other dangerous ocean creatures. One day, in 1960, Tommy and the other five men aboard the 50-foot trawler *The Elizabeth* disappeared during an early-morning run for cod. The area was a hotbed for poor weather, and a cold front was coming in the day the men went missing. Neither Tommy, nor the others or *The Elizabeth*, were ever found. Henry Miller went back to his farm near Fort Smith, Arkansas where he was greeted by the three year old daughter he had never seen before. He stayed on the farm and helped raise a family of three more children. One of his sons, Bedford Forrest Miller, would serve two tours in Vietnam with the 82nd Airborne and 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) Division. He would return home in 1968 only to move to San Antonio, where he would be a Texas Ranger for the next twenty-seven years. Henry and his wife Eileen would spend the rest of their lives tending to the farm and never leaving each other's side until his death in 2003, at eighty-two. As for me, I went back to that little Irish village my unit was based at before Overlord and married Rebecca. She came back with me to Texas and was the best thing to ever happen in my life. I spent over twenty years as a rancher in El Paso before becoming a town sheriff. After retirement, we moved around a lot, from New Mexico to Montana, even back to Europe to London and Paris. I'm still in El Paso, though mostly alone now, since Rebecca died eleven years ago. I miss her every day and still can't believe how quickly time flies. As I watch chaos play out in today's society, I wonder. If they can bitch and moan about a monument, or a bathroom deal or an immigration law, why can't they feel the same want for us? Don't we deserve anything for spilling blood and losing limbs? Maybe not...but who knows? (Seriously, this kind of narration would go great with this music on a movie)

The tears were more painful than anything she had ever felt but she didn't make a sound. Not until she needed to. Her hair looked bristling from the cold. She too welcomed it. Just this one time. She embraced Mizora gently as her soul felt the cold within them both conjoin in mutual farewells. "You're going home, big sis. I will be waiting for you if you want to come back." And then she let go.
