Among mountaineers, the Schilthorn peak had long been known as an exceptionally imposing vantage point, and the project to build a railroad high on the Schilthorn was not left untried.
However, the geology of the mountain presented the engineers with almost insoluble problems. In the following decades, various projects were still being worked out on how to make the Schilthorn summit accessible to non-mountaineers.
It was not until the 1960s, however, that the cableway industry reached a level of development that allowed it to venture into a project such as the opening up of a 3000 m high peak.
Under the leadership of Ernst Feuz, a far-sighted man from Mürren, a group of ambitious pioneers succeeded in overcoming the considerable financial and technical difficulties to finally open the Schilthorn summit to a wide public in 1967. Most would certainly have been content with having successfully realized what was then by far the longest and technically most demanding aerial tramway in the world. But Ernst Feuz wanted more. He dreamed of offering the guests of his cable car a unique experience - the fascinating 360° panorama of the Schilthorn peak was to be brought to his guests' table, so to speak.
The idea of building the world's first revolving restaurant in the midst of the three- and four-thousand-meter peaks was born. At first, most of his contemporaries thought he was totally crazy - but he made his dream come true ....albeit with a little help from James Bond!
