A local New York singer named Mary O'Dowd butchered O Canada prior to a game between the Blue Jays and Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 14, 1985. The crowd had the decency to boo. It was televised on CBC, and I wish someone would post the video. Twice within a few weeks at Edmonton Eskimos' home games in 1996, O Canada was butchered by different singers, crossing national and racial lines. The first was a black American who was visiting the city and conned the team into allowing him to sing the anthem, and the second was a local white kid who had apparently never sung in front of a big crowd before. Both provided evidence for my argument that the tradition, adopted as a temporary measure at baseball games in the U.S. during World War I, should be abandoned.
