Bruges is one of my favourite places on Earth. Been there during Summer, been there during Winter, and I cannot decide when the place looks most beautiful. Drank the best hot chocolate I've ever had there. Also, you seem like a couple of really decent people. I wish you both well.
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Matthew! Where did you have the hot chocolate? Would love to know for a future visit. This was our first time there and I can only imagine how charming Bruges is in winter time, especially picturing a tasty hot chocolate in the scene as well :)
@mathewbarrie6 жыл бұрын
After visiting the chocolate museum there is a place just a little up the road from there called the Choco Jungle Bar. There you can try chocolate drinks made to authentic Aztec and Inca recipes. I had an Aztec one made with various spices, it was an 'interesting' choice. However, we went back a second time a couple of days later and I just had a regular, normal hot chocolate and it was so thick, so creamy, it was beautiful. Please go back during the Winter sometime, you may love the place even more.

Wow! How did Bruges manage to keep all those Medieval buildings intact!? No wonder it’s a World Heritage site. I loved seeing it…And all the tourists! I really enjoyed the “ Madonna and Child’….(And the french fry story)! …Another one for the bucket list….Thanks!
@EileenAldis7 жыл бұрын
There are A LOT of tourists! Bruges definitely deserves a place on the bucket list :) I wondered the same thing about how/why so many buildings are so well preserved and the answer is very interesting! Here's an excerpt of what I wrote in the description box --> The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth again. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!
@krisbaeyens42216 жыл бұрын
In the 16th century the connection of Bruges with the North Sea silted up so merchant ships could not deliver their cargo and thus the city went into a "Cinderella" sleep. Before that it was the richest city in Nortern Europe. Also the place where the first stock excange in the world was founded.
@taiqidong98416 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Bruges was the Manhattan of the middle ages, and then Antwerp, and then as the Spanish devastated our country, Amsterdam took over. In fact, the whole capitalist system was 'invented' and put into practice in the low countries and the north of Italy.

The black cat in the folklore museum is very famous to people from Bruges. The city hall is still used as city hall. The mayor still has his offices there. Your pronunciation of Oud Sint-jan hospitaal is very good. Thank you for trying not to say French fries. Cause it really grind the gears of Belgians. About the origin of french fries, a more common theory is that it used to be called frenched fries, from the verb frenching. To french means to cut something in thin slices, sort of like julienne style, before cooking it. So at the very beginning it was called frenched fried potatoes which turned into frenched fries and eventually became french fries, at least that’s what we were taught in school as kids :)

The tl;dr history of Bruges: 200 A.D. Roman settlers, 900 A.D. to 1200 A.D. Bruges became an important tradecenter due to its harbor. 1300 A.D. to 1500 A.D. Bruges became the economic capital of Northwestern Europe. It attracted Royals, architects and artists. ...All sorts of stuff happened... 1600 to 1885 it became one of the poorest cities, the two world wars didn't affect it and it became world heritage in 2000. Bruges la morte aka Bruges the dead has been preserved by accident and sheer luck.

Mind that only some of the buildings are middle ages period. There is also 16-17-18-19 century buildings. In order to preserve the medieval atmosphere, the city council (like 150 years +) opted in the past that any new construction in the city had to be done in this Bruges style.

I'm seriously considering Bruges over Amsterdam (sorry i can only go to one :)) What would you have picked given these 2 choices only?
@ep44235 жыл бұрын
Bruge for one day and stay the night too just 24 hours is enough if you get up early but 2 days is nice.. Depends the type of holiday you want.. Bruge is small, cultural and friendly Amsterdam is more 'cool' and a city only 20000 people live in bruge

BRUGES IS CALLED VENICE OF THE NORTH

Yes, it certainly has enough bridges to earn the name.

We like to refer to Venice as the Bruges of the south though :p

It's because of trading connection with Venice since the Early Middle Ages actually, when Bruges was the dominant metropolis in Europe. The first Bourse (stock exchange) was in Bruges, and the term 'bank' is from here as well, during the same time and in connection with Venice. What might be interesting too, is that in the Church de Notre Dame, there are the tombs of Marie of Burgundy and her father Charles the Bold, which you showed briefly. The tomb of her mother Isabel de Bourbon, by the way, is in the Cathedral of Antwerp. Also, the Madonna & Child was the only statue of Michael Angelo permitted to leave Italy! And...it's Belgian Fries! (it's a Belgian invention, and mistakenly called french from "frenched" (in old English, meaning finely sliced) by the Americans.)

Ricardo Caine, you mean that's Holland trying to get & take what Belgium has...as usual

There is another theory regarding the origin of the term 'french' fries. It could come from the verb 'to french': "When vegetables such as beans, peppers or potatoes are cut into long thin strips, the preparation process refers to the vegetables as being "frenched"." 'Frenched' fries then became 'french' fries. My dad wrote an article about fries, that's how I know :-)
