Everything Calvin said is spot on. What I learned through practice is that besides making sure H screw is “truly” set to align with the smallest cog without the interference of cable tension, you have to make sure there WILL be ENOUGH tension when you pull from the smallest to the second cog and back to 1. It is critical for this step to go as precise as possible. Therefore, after H is set, you need to taut the cable by pulling a bit and tightening the pinch bolt. However, it doesn’t need to be pulled extremely tight, you just need to have some space at the barrel adjuster to make it right. In another word, you need to be sure to be able to turn the barrel adjuster later counterclockwise a few turns to taut the cable to reach the cable tension necessary. It happens very often that when you want to step it down from the second to the smallest cog, the chain doesn’t move. Then you turn the barrel adjuster clockwise (even all the way in) trying to release more cable tension but still it won’t go. Sometimes it’s because you need a bit more from releasing H screw. Other times, there was not enough tension in the first place although you’re able to go from 1 to 2 without issue, it won’t spring back to 1 freely.

Happy 4-th of July! Back onto the subject. This is why when setting the derailleur, the limit screws are set without the cable, to allow the derailleur to move freely from one end point to the other end point, so we can limit the derailleurs real end positions. Only then the barrel adjusters are wind up all the way in, then you go 1.5 - 2 full revs out to give yourself some space for adjustment, shift to the smallest gear, while pulling the cable by hand and then attach it to the derailleur, and start the indexing process - setting the cable tension to be just the right one.

this. this video, I thought I knew a lot about bikes and i've tuned my derailer a whole bunch of times and it has been working perfect, but I went to check and low and behold my shifter cable was holding it in the lowest gear. I was always told to set the limit screws with the cable disconnected, and this is why, great video

I think that's the first time I've seen *how* the limit screw works to constrain the possible range of derailleur positions, as opposed to just what setting the screw is intended to achieve.

This 5 year old video just helped me figure out why my Alivio would not move closer to the 1st gear of my cassette, with adjusting my low limit screw. 😂🤦🏾 It was my cable tension (or lack thereof).

This info isn't just for novices. I've seen more than a couple of bike techs make indexing adjustments without loosening the pinch-bolt, and setting the limits without the cable. This process makes it simpler, quicker and about as fool-proof as you can get.

Another good video. BTW, is there a more precise way of indexing your gears than just eyeballing and listening? I'm surprised Park doesn't have a tool for that.
@ShermanSitter7 жыл бұрын
that's a good question. I've never had an issue with the listening and feeling methods (how fast and clean the shifts are), but I eagerly await the response from the youtube community. :) I must confess, I haven't used the eyeballing method. I figure if its close the listening and feel will get you closer to the truth than your eyes, especially since those can be done under pressure of pedaling on the road.

Would it be better to set the H limit with no cable and no chain to remove any and all tension possible?
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
The chain is needed, because it is the dropping on to the smallest sprocket, and how it runs on that sprocket, that should determine the H-limit setting. Having the pulley exactly under the sprocket not the point.

I bought my first mtb after years of not riding (last rode as a kid on a bmx). I'm loving it, but I had never owned a bike with gears and when I got home realised the front gears wernt working. Turned out to be a cable problem. So I replaced the cables to my shimano shifters. Was proud of my self, first thing i ever fixed on a bike ha. Shifts up and down no problem! But now I have the problem where my chain is rubbing my derailieur (only when in low or high gears) and no matter how many hours I spend fiddling with the H and L screws I can't seem to get it lined up right at all. Now I'm thinking I need a new bottom bracket but tempted to just take it to a bike shop but really wanna fix it my self! Anyone got any advice ? I'd appreciate it alottt

The Derailleur Refused To Shift To The Smallest Cog I Tried To Loosen The H Screw And Loosen The Barrel Adjuster And It Didn't Work , It Only Worked When I Loosened The L Screw , Why ??
@reluba5 жыл бұрын
Can anyone help me with this issue I have with my front derailleur? My chain rubs the cage of the derailleur when I'm on the big plate and starting with the 8th cog ( 9th and 10th also). I try to adjust the limit of the derailleur with the H screw but it doesn't move outer than that. I have full Shimano 105 for the record. It doesn't bother me that much because I only use the last 3 gears while descending hills (which are not very common where I live), but I want to know that I can access the full capacity of my bike :) I googled the issue, but didn't find a good fix. Hope anybody can pinpoint me in the right direction. Thanks and have fun on your rides!
@parktool5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like if you add some tension to the system with a barrel adjuster at the shifter or at a stop it will solve your issue. Have you checked out our front derailleur adjustment video?

I turned all my barrel adjusters to where they are fully tight and hard to loosen, Removed both limiter screws. It took me like 7 hours to get it flawless, and actually better shifting than I have literally ever had, I think I almost got the adjustment process down to a science. I live around people who love to .... choice words... fool around, and now it's harder for them to do so. At he end of the 7 hours, I have now thought of a took I could make to bring the time down to a few minutes with my setup, all adjusters fully tighten and limiter screws completely removed. Anyone else interested in this ?
@chrisduke32517 жыл бұрын
Yeah, good info, but no fix. Start with the cable removed in the smallest gear. Adjuster turned all the way in, then back out a couple turns. When set to perfect alignment, then connect cable. Go threw gears, and adjust barrel so that it shifts smoothly. At this point, check your H & L to see that they are contacting the limiting surface when everything is running beautifully. Done deal.
