FORGOTTEN HISTORY

Күн бұрын

In April 1945 President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office, and his vice president, Harry S. Truman took the oath of office. Truman continued with the mission of winning World War II, and handling the alliance fighting in Europe, Asia and the Pacific. But unlike his predecessor, he saw a different and equally dangerous world coming when that conflict was over. Unlike FDR Truman was not enamored with the communist world, and his presidency would establish that fact. Written and Hosted by Colin D. Heaton. Forgotten History is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

When I visited the Truman Library in Independence, MO, there were statements by Japanese people who lived through the atomic bombings. One of the statements really stuck with me. A woman said that she didn't blame the Americans for dropping the bombs. She said Japan attacked America first, and had already turned down every offer for peace that the US proposed. She said that Japan would not have surrendered without the bomb.

And that Japanese woman is absolutely right. As a millennial, and a progressive, I was so pissed off at what they taught us at Northeastern U, which is that Truman, Churchill and the greatest of them all, FDR, were all war criminals. I also remember my idiot professor making excuses for Pearl Harbor, basically implying the USA refusing to sell Japan oil was an act of war. I mean, what? Man she used to piss me off! We stopped selling oil to them because they were committing unprecedented atrocities in China. God, I hate that professor. All I could do was trash her in her teacher evaluations.

Another thing that you never hear much about is that the U.S.A. spread leaflets ahead of time warning the Japs to get out of the cities before major destruction was on the way , and the Japanese government told their own citizens to ignore the warnings , and that is was just a worthless scare tactic by the Americans.

We really respect his integrity of not accepting any offers of better house nor payment for a speech or university position. He stayed in a house without privacy (four sides could be seen from the streets). We don’t see any Presidents in recent years with his integrity and a pride dignity. He earned our respects for sure!

I spent countless hours at the Truman Library, even got to see his personal office. I was never fascinated with the political aspects of his life, more the man... his personal and military life, his core values. I have a bad taste in my mouth for politicians, and I know President Truman probably wasn't the best man for the job. But I believe he did the best job possible at the time, given the circumstances. On the subject of elections and holding a political office....Back then you wanted a politician that you thought was going to do the best job. Truman was a fine man whom I believe made wise and enduring policy's/decisions that gave future leaders the best example to follow. As he took over the office of US President due to Roosevelts death during WWII the consequences of his actions would affect the world for generations. Armed with only a high school diploma and a typical American upbringing Truman utilized his world experience as a hard working leader, a man with integrity and perseverance to showcase how a superpower leads in the modern era of post WWII. History has proven Truman to be one of the very best American presidents and a man who is so sadly rare in politics today. While I've always had strong sympathies for Harry Truman, there are two thing he did that I always had a big problem with. That was him not only signing the National Security act, but in fact being the author and creator of it. It was a piece of legislation he's been working on since 1943 and in ratifying it as President, he is directly responsible for turning the country in the surveillance state we have today. Granted, those who ended up being in charge of the various agencies that were created, such as NSA and CIA, ended up doing much to advance this national surveillance with Truman having little to no control over (intentionally or unintentionally, we will never know), but had he not come up with the bill in the first place, just maybe the government of today wouldn't have all this power to eliminate our liberties one piece at a time. The second thing he did I have a problem with, is that he picked up where FDR left off, increasing the size of the federal government and in doing so, giving the federal government more and more power to rule over our lives, rather than the other way around as described in the Constitution

I like your thinking. I wonder if their thinking then was we have to push the rules or we won't have a constituition left to worry about if we lose the war? I'm not saying that is correct, I just wonder how it feels back then thinking the nazis, Japaneese and commies were going to take us over. The closest thing I can remotely identify with is about 10am on 9/11 on the way to the ammo store with my friends, our mindset was on the way to being out of control. We feared millions of sleeper cells crushing our infrastrucure as planes kept coming down we thought it was the opening salvo. So maybe they had that feeling back then x10. I don't know.

He had big shoes to fill but Nixon said that Truman made his own footprints in history. As a freshman member of Congress Nixon met with Truman and at some point Truman told him that the toughest choice he ever had to make was to drop the A-bombs- a choice Nixon said he agreed with. Nixon's relationship with Truman took a turn for the worse because of the Alger Hiss scandal but the two men were reconciled before Truman's death in 1972.

Obamacare was not a "disaster", only the mandate requiring health insurance was which doubled the cost of health insurance overnight and should have been declared unconstitutional. Obama included that under coercion from the health care insurance lobby. I helped implement the Obamacare computer system for the State of Arizona, and we were one of the few states to "get it right" and deploy a functional system for our citizens--it was the only state government job I ever had. I benefited from Obamacare which paid for urgent medical care I needed. Truman's decision to use atomic weapons saved millions of American and Japanese lives, especially when Japan resorted to suicide bombings. And he later avoided such use on China during the Korean war which might have brought retaliation from Russia. My father was a staff sergeant in Korea and combat photographer. I own a signed picture from Eisenhower he took as part of that role. My father later became a Nuclear inspector for the US civilian government and Navy, commissioning much of the Navy's nuclear surface and sub fleet until working again for the Nuclear Regulatory commission around '80. Admiral Hymen Rickover tried to prevent his transfer from the Navy and it took congressional intervention to overrule the Admiral who loved throwing his weight around. My dad was in the occupation forces in Japan--he was in basic training in the Army until the bombings happened. He saw Hiroshima and Nagasaki and was moved. Sadly, many Japanese spurned the survivors of the bombings due to their injuries, an underlying presence in their society that they should have perished considering their mindset that their civilians and veterans should have died rather than be taken into enemy hands, though that mindset has gradually changed over the years. I was 31 when I visited Japan and Guam on business in '92 and I loved the hospitality of the Japanese tourists in Guam and that of a hotel I stayed at about fifteen mins north of Narita. I remember the cherry blossoms on the motor coach to my hotel and our kind hostess on that motorcoach. My Dad was so happy I could see where he served. He passed in '99, sadly from cancer as I will, our entire nuclear family was exposed to radiation though for me, I live by the spiritual message that whether by battle or by natural causes, our ancestors, part of eternal creation, know and respect our corporal bodies are just part of our journey in the Cosmos. Thank you for your service and insights on Truman and Russia--whose own mindset of their own colonialism and their hypocrisy and lies before invading the Ukraine still shows their paranoia and thirst for living room the world's largest country by land area does not need. I pray the US does not make the mistake of engaging them directly and the nuclear holocaust of MAD doctrine that would inevitably follow.

I think you hit the major highlights, which is why I've always viewed Truman as a mixed bag (as most leaders tend to be). His decision to abandon Chang Kai Shek in the Chinese Civil War (a failure he shared with Gen Marshall) led directly to the Korean War, where he again failed when he refused to even consider the use of nuclear bombs against the Communists. This has to be balanced against his success in rapidly ending WWII with these same weapons and his standing up to the Communists with the Berlin Airlift. On the home front his civil rights success and recognition of Israel are counterbalanced by his attempts to control the economy and the Red Scare tactics such as loyalty oaths.

The dropping of the atomic bombs on the Empire of Japan is not controversial at all. It was President Truman's least bad option at the time. The issue of the decision is more Soviet Propaganda than not. As for Korea, the Soviets and the Chi-Coms went for open warfare, and it would not work out, so they changed to insurgencies and "Wars of Liberation." The US would address this with the formation of Special Forces, most notably 'The Green Berets" on President Truman's watch and more so with Eisenhower's and John F. Kennedy's. And the era of dirty little wars in the 3rd World. We can look at President Truman's decisions with 20/20 hindsight. Firing Douglas MacArthur was both the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. Both individuals were correct and bad at the same time. The military answers to the Civil authority in the US. And well, Mac, in the end, was a bridge too far. For a Democrat, Harry Truman was maybe the last really good Democrat to hold the office, if you can even say that about the Democrats. And yeah, some things he did get wrong would lead to some of our current problems within our society and budget. My Mother quit the Democrats with Eisenhower, much to the family's discussion; my father would with JFK, and that was sealed with Ted Kennedy getting elected to the Senate. The current discourse in American politics has its roots with Harry Truman and FDR to some extent. The final word has not been written on Harry. The man never saut the Presidency, it was an accident of fate that the job was trusted apond him. Overall all he did a better than fine job of it, warts and all.

Thanks for the video. Truman is my favorite president because he took it upon himself to take the harder decisions and carry the burden himself. His decision to drop both atomic bombs weighed heavily, but knowing how imperial Japan was stalwart in fighting to the last man, showing them that they faced total eradication was the only path they would have respected. They are a proud and mighty people and it would have lead to near Genocide if we had to take the fight across their islands. I always hated having to argue the points in college, because many have a sense that the Japanese were going to surrender before the bombs, but cannot bring up any solid proof of this. War is far more disconnected from the reality of today than it was 100 years ago.

Truth is much different than the myths and legends I use to believe. People have forgotten how funny Truman was, he had a quick wit and a sense of humor that came out in his press conferences. I went to the movies regularly when I was a kid, and every time I went to the movies there was always a newsreel. A Truman press conference was featured in many newsreels and the thing I remember most was how often he broke up the reporters with his witty remarks. Many of Truman's quips went over my head, because I was just a kid, but it was obvious that he was loved and respected by most people. The only time I ever heard anyone criticize Truman was when he fired MacArthur.

On one hand, Truman led the country through very unique and difficult times. As with everyone, there were some dark areas. One was that many times his actions were dictated by personal feelings. He had several cronies placed in positions in the White House and had an instinctive dislike for people in high positions (e.g. MacArthur and Churchill and any admiral, with Marshal an exception). At the Potsdam Conference he shoved Churchill to the side and regarded Stalin as an 'affable fellow' with whom he could get along. (He found out differently later on.) He lacked FDR's personal confidence of his ability to lead the American people which led to his inviting Stalin into the Pacific War with Japan and the decision to use nuclear bombs to end the war. It also led to his ambiguous leadership with respect to MacArthur and the situation which led to MacArthur's dismissal. He was also keenly partisan ad made every effort to shut Republican senators/representatives out of decisions.

I was a neighbor of Truman in Independence, Missouri. I was in second grade when Truman turned the first shovel full of earth for the groundbreaking for the future Truman museum. My grandfather was a high-ranking Freemason, as was Truman. We took the soil turned by Truman's golden shovel and placed the soil into a hankerchief, which we kept for "mystical" purposes. I kept telling grandpa to throw that dirt away. I researched photographs on the internet regarding the ceremony for the groundbreaking. Grampa and I were edited out, but we were there. I used to pass by Trump's house. We would always speak to one another briefly. I also met Eisenhower and Nixon shortly thereafter. We moved to Whittier😂. I went joyriding on Eisenhower's golf cart in the desert and attended Julie Nixon's graduation from Marlborough. Dad was the Ob/Gyn to the Nixon women in Whittier. Truman was simple and straightforward. I don't agree with 100% of what he did. The buck stopped with him. He lived very frugally, unlike retired presidents of today.

Truman used nuclear bombs on Japan, but he did not decide to use them in Korea. Why not? American troops were almost defeated.
