This one was really scary to do. The sound was really loud, just one spinner spinning to that plate made terrible sound and we were terrified to collide those steel ones :D But they were surprisingly easy and there wasn't anything too dangerous.

At first, my theory was that the time it took for Pretty Boy to spin up took so long that all the energy from Old Champ was lost before the fight, which gave Pretty Boy the advantage. But After the final round, it became pretty clear that the deciding factor was the proportionally larger body and smaller bolts, which, despite a smaller overall mass, provided a much more stable and balanced center of gravity, and thus Pretty Boy was able to counter Old Champ's greater mass by putting more of his own mass behind each blow than Old Champ was able to. You can actually see the difference in how the two tops behave based on how they spin when left alone in the arena. Very interesting science!
@dsnodgrass48437 жыл бұрын
True, altho' I think the Old Champ's spin was perpetually affected by the removal of the "spin-up" device, in a way that Pretty Boy's was not.
@adamgall89607 жыл бұрын
Old champs center of gravity is much higher, making it easier to topple and those longer bolts factor in too when hitting the ground compared to the body hitting for pretty boy.
@oliverwilson117 жыл бұрын
Ol' Champ has a higher centre of gravity and a more even ratio between the maximum and minimum principal moments of inertia (i.e. Ol' champ is less disc-shaped). Both those things make Ol' Champ a less stable spinner. I found this physics paper on spinning tops and stability igl.ethz.ch/projects/spin-it/SpinItPaper.pdf

I think these are my favourite videos you guys made. It is really amazing how much energy the heavier tops can store, and watching them destroy things in slow motion is a real treat. I would love to see a dished and polished arena, but i think it could get pretty hectic pretty fast. The sound of pretty boy and the 4kg top from the vacuum video spinning up with the air tools communicates the power transfer in a way I never dreamed it could, maybe the most hype thing I've heard on youtube

Terrific! Very interesting stuff happening with these things, gives me a few ideas & observations: -With two of the pneumatic tools and some box-sections, you could make a rig to simultaneously spin up two tops at once and release more remotely, either simply standing at the other end of a lever-arm or complex like cable & pulleys or linear actuators. -Maybe wrap the play-dough one in a couple turns of pallet wrap; it's got a lot of potential to absorb energy from a steel top!
@R90007 жыл бұрын
Higher moment of inertia wins when rotational velocity is the same. You can see in the slow-mo that whenever they collide, the spinners are subtracting speed (and also energy) from each other. Once the majority of the energy is gone, the spinner is no longer as stable due to gyroscopic effects, and thus it only takes a little nudge to knock it over. This compounded with the fact that the old spinner had longer bolts that hit the floor on a lower angle of perturbation than the other, means that the new spinner was always going to win.

I really enjoy your videos, you two are pretty cool! I reckon you guys could/should redo this one. Just the last battle. Machine up two new tops, identical, with just one difference. Give them angled teeth on the outside diameter, but each with its teeth in the opposite direction. With each of them the same dimensions except for opposite pointing teeth, the collisions should be very destructive. They dont have to be time consuming or expensive to make either. Just make two traditional top shapes out of say, some 100mm round bar, then just cut six or eight teeth on each on the dividing head. You could even machine them the same way, just flip one over so its teeth are opposite. If you dont quite understand what I mean I'll be more than happy to do some proper drawings for you.

I think it's clear why the new champ is better. more mass spread out to a larger radius. the old champ might be more massive over all, but it's mass is more concentrated toward the axis. old champ is also much more top heavy, which is why it has a tendency to tip and even start spinning on one of arms like we saw in one of the other videos. the next spinner should be as heavy as old champ or heavier, but more in the form and profile of new champ, better design by and large
