Quality power tools have always been worth the extra money for me, such as Dewalt or Milwaukee. These tools can withstand being dropped, overheat abuse and getting wet. A cheap black and decker can barely do the job. I couldn't justify the price till I actually owned one and then my mindset changed about buying higher quality items.

Luckily I didn't even bother trying the lower quality ones. However Dewalt's Nicd batteries do not exactly last that long, perhaps getting a Li-ion type would have longer life for short intermittent usage.

I inherited a Rolex from my deceased dad. I think it was made in the 50s. It is still working and needs no batteries. It is no longer as accurate because it is a bit fast but it is fine with me. I won't sell it for sentimental reason. Plus, I am using it once in a while.

Sometimes buying an off brand item will last longer and is more durable ham a name brand item. The off brand item will be a company trying to make a name for themselves, so they're building good stuff, when a name brand item is already making huge profits and have to keep up with demand so they're just throwing together items quickly without quality control

Another Great Video!! I had a finance professor in college that emphasized frequency of use and durability when buying goods. He used a TV as an example. Most people watch at least some TV daily (high usage), and you may end up spending less money than going out to the movies, for drinks etc. I'm not advocating being a couch potato, but interesting example.

But I went ahead and spent $20 on a new garlic press that my husband recommended for its sturdy metal. So we'll save money in the long run 😊.

Probably smallest yard is low maintenance. But single family homes appreciate the most which might offset all the costs you have to deal with. Other kinds just do not appreciate as much.

Very interesting video. In terms of durability, I find the material is important, something made in metal or stainless steel is much more durable than something made in plastic. Even though it costs more as you say in the long term it is worth it, if you use it a lot as it won't break as often.

Very good point. Plastic break from fatigue and UV exposure. Rubber melts and degrade. Steel and metal are all much much better and are the types of goods that will have a high chance to last a lifetime.

Being a shopaholic is usually an indication of a deeper problem.. Daddy issues usually. I suggest you grab your wallet and run for your life. Growing up poor does not necessarily make a shopaholic. Many girls from the Silicon Valley with Google employed parents think that the money will never end and buy like crazy. When I first started caring for my sick sister who lived there, I soon learned to take my pickup. What I picked out from people's throwouts and FreeCycle more than paid for my weekly trips. I sold many used washing machines and furniture to my local second hand store.

I am an Asian woman brought up by a frugal mom so I am not easily tempted by stores. If I need to buy something, that is the reason I go to a store/shop/mall. However, I used to be tempted by books since I love reading but I have learned to curb this temptation and donated my books (many are now hard to find) to the school I used to work in as a teacher.

One thing that really caught me by surprise is that when I started displacing purchases from my debit card to my new credit cards, I realized I wasn't meeting the minimum number of monthly debit transactions to be eligible for dividend rewards! Instead, I was only getting the base level of interest, which is like a fraction of 1%. So by using credit cards to earn rewards, I was actually LOSING rewards in the sum of $3-5 or more per month. BAH! So, the next time I go grocery shopping, I will go to self-checkout and be the annoying guy making 10 small purchases on his debit card.

You have to weigh the benefits of each. $20k with 1% interest is $200 minus taxes so lets call it $150. Credit card points are not taxed. So If you spend $1000/month at 5% = $600/year. You can indeed try to generate debit purchases but I find that this takes too much mental capacity as compared to what you get for the effort.

Good tips, lol when I buy things, I always consider whether I can gift it to someone in the future, or seem to find more satisfaction buying things for others 😂, I can spend hours walking around a shop and think "oh, this would look good on (insert friend's name)" Hahaha, anything above $25-50 to me is expensive 😂. Hmmm? The dollar amount should not matter right? It's the value you get from it. I know there is a dollar amount threshold you would need to consider longer so I get that. I did buy things from groupon before. But my main idea is to never look through those to find deals. I find the items I want and then find the deal or wait until a deal comes up.

In previous videos you mentioned there is no automatic payment-about 2 years ago. My banker mentioned there is minimum and maximum auto pay options, which i am not sure how they work nor how to arrange that. Am new to this and it is my first credit card. You are very welcome! I'm glad you found it! For BofA Cash Rewards card, BofA since then added the auto pay feature and now you can do it like the other cards. I suggest to set it up to pay the statement balance in full a day or two before the due date. BofA though it's a bit annoying in that you have to wait until the first statement before you can even schedule the automatic payment. So set it up after you get your statement. You have to be EXTRA careful with BofA cards because they auto-pay is pretty screwy until you are confirmed that it is setup correctly. I would check the first 3 months a few days before the due date to make sure the auto-pay is setup correctly.

BeatTheBush Yep BofA pay in general is very screwy. On one occasion, I paid some of the balance on the date of the new balance period and they considered it as a payment towards the previous statement period because they had not finished making the statement documents. Then they made me do another minimum payment for the new cycle. It was quite funny. I argued that the payment was made ON THE FIRST DATE of the new cycle and they would not budge in their ridiculous statement. Just wait for a few days after the new cycle or few days before the due date to make the payment. I would not risk the payment screwups with these guys!

Whatever hobby you take part in you'll use various kinds of products, generally there is a bigger brand or industry leading name, they're usually industry leaders because they make some of the best products (plus marketing, legacy, market share etc.) if it's something you're going to use a lot and get pleasure from by doing your hobby it's probably a wise choice to buy the better brand. However - Do you need their latest release? Can you buy the item used? I'd rather buy better/top spec stuff that's either a couple of years older or used but I know works; that's where I see value but that's just me.

I so totally know about those. Except my National brand rice cooker also has fuzzy logic whatever that does. I tasted some rice from the induction cookers and they come out insanely fluffy. What? Induction? +$100 What? Pressure Cooker? + $100. I think this type of spending doesn't get your value in durability but rather in quality of the item. The rice comes out so good your enjoyment is +200%.

For 4k, you need to sit no farther than 1.5x the diagonal to see the difference. So if your setup in your living room is more than that, don't buy a 4k. TV is this huge dispenser of ads which really warps the value you place on all the other things you buy.

I've had an iPhone 6 and a MacBook Pro for over a year now and they still work great. It is true that they are more expensive than a PC or a Samsung counterpart, but they also last longer due to better quality assurance on factories and better materials overall (aluminum instead of plastics, lighter/thinner body instead of heavy/bulky, etc). Also, since it's almost a designer brand, the value for the products doesn't depreciate as fast as the competitors. Since I work on IT and I'm pretty much on the computer or the phone all day, I considered that it was necessary to go and get premium quality items, although if are you just buying it for the "show off value", then it's not worth it since you won't be able to juice all the value out them. I agree that many times it depends a lot more on the usage you'll give to those particular products above of the monetary / social value of the products itself.

The resale value is a great point and Macs keeps their value very well. Although, I argue the quality issue as I never had a computer break on me spontaneously after the warranty period. Usually, they just go out of date from being too slow. It's a slightly different scene now because computers have gotten fast enough that you might be able to use it for normal applications for many more years than before. Then there's the OS and if you like to work in one vs another.

There is a grey area of course, I agree. I own a macbook pro since 2011 and the only Issues I had with it were fixed by apple free of charge (Apple Quality Program). It cost me 1900€ at the time. Recently I upgraded the original hard drive on it to an ssd and it's faster and smoother than ever, running the latest Apple OS, well you get the point. The price tag might seem steep sometimes but in some cases, its worth it. I barely had to do any maintenance on this machine and as you know time is very valuable as well :)

Yeah. Sometimes it is hard to justify a move to PC if you are a Mac person due to the stickiness of the ecosystem as well. It presents a huge hurdle to switch. But ignoring the ecosystem part. Would a PC last just as long, maybe. It certainly will not hold it's value. How about utility? Can you do things just as fast in both ecosystems? Maybe, maybe not. Socially though, owning a mac does include a little bit more of a status symbol which is hard to ignore.

BeatTheBush You're right, it's kind of hit and miss with Zara products. A puffer jacket I purchased recently was so bad quality-wise that it had to be refunded within less of a month. A pair of 2013 boots, however, lasted me two and a half years, being worn 70% of the time in all kinds of weather conditions.
