John Melendez didn't get signed by Atlantic Records. Stuttering John from the Howard Stern Show did. He was a below mediocre guitar player who hid behind compression and overdrive set on ten and just played simple scales with some shitty bending thrown in. Atlantic used studio musicians to clean up the album and that is why you see so many technicians listed on the credits. I'm sure the clean master recording of John's guitar while he was in the studio sounds like cats screwing.

Narcissist like being disgusting and obnoxious. I'm no psychologist, but it goes hand in hand with their nature. It's attention getting, and really it could stop there. The negative reception is easily deflected in their "Rockstar" self image, and they don't tend to care about the damage caused, if it doesn't effect them. In John's case, he lives in filth already while boozing and pill-ed up, so cleaning up spit and taking care of anything, even his cats, easily goes over his head.

He equates humor to bullying, it's why he is so bad at trash talk, and can't take jokes, but it comes natural to him to be unfairly mean or a creep.
