The husband who came home from Afganistan to be with his wife on the anniversary of the loss of their little girl (literally - she didn't look old enough for school yet), totally melted me from the inside out. That's a couple who will last.

My Mother was a primary school teacher, God bless her, and the kids she taught STILL come up to me and my Brothers to talk about my Mum. I'm now 43, and have several friends who remember their years being taught by Mum, which is truly beautiful to hear. The impact a good teacher can have will last an entire lifetime.

My father officially retires from the military TODAY! He missed out on 9 or 10 years of my life and was mostly there for the other 5 years. These people sacrifice everything, their lives, and their children's lives and childhood. I applaud anyone who serves, and I thank you all -- I can't wait for the next 2 or 3 years when I can finally follow in his footsteps.

My husband served in Vietnam and when his ship returned, people spit on him, and called him a baby killer. These men and women have scars from seeing their friends killed or other horrific things. To return to a country that treated them so bad hurt. It wasn't until the last 10 years people walk up to him and will say welcome home then thank you for your service. I was unloading a truck at the store I worked at when my cousin came home from Iraq to surprise us. I was told there was someone here to see me and I stepped through the door of the stock room to see him. I could only say his name, surprised, and hug him. We grew up like brothers, and it is still a vivid memory for me that makes me smile every time I think about it. This was years ago, and he's out of the service now and running his own business, but I still remember that day, and I don't take for granted any chance I get to see him.

I'm a Navy vet from the 70's. I believe most people will thank a vet or a current military member for their service. But, we all need to be more appropriative of the family of current members. They sacrifice so much and never really knowing their loved one will come home. Things can change so fast in the military so their worry is constant and daily. I thank the families as much as the current members. THANK YOU.!!!!

I was refereeing a youth football game in 2021 and the guy in charge said “we’re gonna have a special announcement before kickoff” and then the announcer started talking and I look to the scoreboard and see a soldier running to the field who was a player and cheerleader’s dad back from Africa after 10 months. I’ve seen countless of these videos and I finally got to witness one in person and they’re even better in person

I'm glad these returning or surprising military are fit. Their families LAUNCH themselves into their loved one's arms, and its pretty amazing to see how well they are caught! There's the man that catches his wife out of the air without any move , no step back, forward or up, he just stands there to receive boarders! Then there is the man who is walking forward, takes one step back then proceeds forward with a woman I assume he knows! And it doesn't matter who the returning person is - their loved ones pile on, or just take hold and proceed to give a 3 second hug x all the days apart - all at one time. (It takes a while.) Beautiful.

I sure did, every step of the way ! Tears came naturally, felt good that a heart across the sea, who has no relations at all to the folks coming home, is somewhat able to feel others excitement and tears of joy. My mind kind-of wandered off to the ones who never made it back home. May God Bless their Souls.

As the mother of two boys who serve in the USMC, this brought tears to my eyes. My eldest son served during the Operation Iraqi freedom. I worried everyday and everyday I'd pray that he would make it him home safe, and after a year he finally came home. A changed man but, safe. Unfortunately some of his buddies didn't come home. My younger boy was stationed in Guam last year when the typhoon hit the island. For days I didn't know if he was okay. If anyone or the ship they sailed in on was okay because that's where they stayed to wait out the storm. A week post typhoon, I finally received a call from him and thankfully he and everyone onboard was okay. Ship suffered minor damages but everyone was safe. Knowing your children are safe is the best news for a parent(s)

Marines can write poetry, although we do eat the crayons when done - purple is the best flavor Those who wait That day might be today That day you've dreaded That day you learn your loved one is coming home that one final time Those of us who served our country insuring the freedom of strangers in some ways have it easier than those who wait. We knew what was happening. Those who wait can only watch the door and pray that today is not that day. On Veterans and Memorial day be sure to honor those who wait. In so many ways theirs it the greater sacrifice.

When people say war only affects those on the frontlines, they forget about those on a different front. Their loved ones back home have to go through something almost if not as bad as they have to go through. The psychological torment of knowing that your goodbye may be the last thing you say to them is tremendous. That’s why it is called the home front.

These homecomings are always an emotional event. I am a retired vet and have been through it 7 times myself. As time went on and I got older and retired my perspective on things has changed. First, make sure that the only surprise is the military member coming home, don't ask don't tell. Second, there is a flip side to the uniformed soldier coming home. Sometimes the uniformed soldier is not someone you know or recognize, and the news is not good. Third, I am a hardcore military guy and I love my country. But these endless wars have to stop. Never support someone for political office that supports engaging is these wars.

Were you a vet from the Viet Nam conflict (it was not called a "war" therefore they were not given the bonus pay of having been in a war.) The returning military were treated by American civilians as monsters, to clean it up a bit. I am not exaggerating it a bit - actually the opposite.

Think of being away from your cousin 9 years and 5 of them being an active duty marine. The moment I saw my cousin again I laughed at the situation: opened my door to him and his mom carrying in large brown bags. I wasn’t expecting it. Love you Ethan and can’t wait for October to come around.

My dad was enlisted before I was born. I often watched these years after he left, not because I was imagining my dad coming home from war, but just coming home at all. He disowned me a few years ago, taking my little brother from me, and now won't ever come home again. I thank the fathers who actually care for their children, stand for them, fight for them, and remain honorable all the while. My dad wouldn't take an insult for me, let alone a bullet. Thank you for caring for your children, loving them, and providing safety and security.
