Just finished the frame yesterday. What is the height for the walls in Part 2? I believe 4' but wanted to check with you. Thank you!
@TheArtofDoing
@TheArtofDoing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! Awesome. You'll have to send me some pics of your progress. Yes it was about 4'... 6' 3.5" total for the height of the low walls and 10' 3.5" for the high walls. So, I worked backwards from the height of the high side of the run walls. Figured the slope of the roof I wanted and made the walls the height of the difference. Not sure if that makes sense. If you've watched up to the rafter video it should fall into place. Depending if you get a lot of snow or not you might change up a bit. I also maximized for 10' 2x4s on the high wall so I wouldn't have to make cuts... I hope that answered your question!! I'll help as much as I can!

How thick are the wall panels you installed? I have 7/16" wall panels and after watching your video it looked as if you may have thinner walls...just want to make sure I don't install walls/doors that may be too heavy. Thanks much for your assistance!

@@robmartin190 what's up Rob! You sound like you're making fast progress!!! I used standard t1-11. It's much thinner than what you're using. I haven't had any issues with weight but you might with what you're hanging. I'd say go with what you've got and you might have to beef up the hinges and/or add some bracing. You could also buy thinner material and use it JUST on the door cutouts. Im excited to see your finished coop!!! Will you send me some pics of your progress and when you're done?

Thank you for the great video. This is the second video I've found that provides some great ideas after I have already created my DIY plans and started cutting pieces.... lol. My question for you is focused on the pavers and the contact for the coop vertical supports and the run's vertical supports. I've tried reviewing several of your videos and haven't answered my questions. 1. Is the wood resting directly on the blocks without being tied/cemented down? 2. How has it held up over time? Has anything shifted off of the blocks? 3. I plan on building a run that is 10'x20'. Do you think I need any center supports? I wasn't planning on it, but thought I would ask. I'm in SOCAL and don't get any snow or rain so that's not an issue. 4. Are you using pressure treated wood anywhere coop or run?
@TheArtofDoing
@TheArtofDoing Жыл бұрын
Hi David, isn't that always the way? I hope you didn't have to alter too much! Great questions! Im going to answer in there next comment so I don't miss any. Thanks for watching!!!
@TheArtofDoing
@TheArtofDoing Жыл бұрын
Here goes the answers: 1 - Yes the wood is directly on the pavers. If the wall wasn't perfectly level, I used roof tiles to shim. I spent a lot of time packing down and leveling the hole before the paver went down. It's very stable. 2 - it's held up great! Nothing has moved or shifted. I think that would only happen if the ground under the pavers was not level or it was not packed and settled. 3 - I'm not sure of your design, I would want to see it before o could give you advice on center supports. 4 - I only used pressure treated on the 4x4 legs of the coop. Because my ground is sloped I went the lies expensive route. I wish that i HAD used PT on at least the bottom most 2x4 on the wall sections just to be sure but I haven't had any rot at all yet. Thanks again for the great questions. You can email me anytime at practicetheartod@gmail.com

Really digging this build....one question I have so far is why did you choose to not do a secured foundation? Just curious 🤔
@TheArtofDoing
@TheArtofDoing 4 жыл бұрын
Great question @Bill Luneau! I really thought about it but decided that the extra money and work it would take wouldn't be with it. This is going to be very big and im hoping, heavy enough to not need a sturdier foundation.

hi good vid, although the 2x4 won’t be rigid enough for floor joists. you maybe should’ve used 2x6 or even 2x8. just sayin’. you may be able to go under and put some support in a few places and that will help.
@TheArtofDoing
@TheArtofDoing 3 жыл бұрын
I figured since it's just holding up chickens and some bedding, I didn't need to go 2x6. It's a little spongy with me walking on it but holds up. Do you really think 2x6 is needed for such small weight?
@laura-leemurphyuta78
@laura-leemurphyuta78 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtofDoing yes, simply because of you walking on it and for sustainablity. Who knows, at some point down the road you may want to use the coop for something else. I had chickens for several years and then when they got too old they went in the pot. Then there was a long time before I got chickens again and used the building for something else and built a smaller coop later.

Well I am a complete novice and I DO want to make this thing well so I guess I'll add some blocking underneath. Have you seen the other episodes? Any other things ive overlooked? Thanks for watching and thanks for the advice!
@laura-leemurphyuta78
@laura-leemurphyuta78 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtofDoing I just finished watching your other coop vids. you did a good job on a lot of it for being a novice.There are some things that you should consider though. The weight of the materials you used to build, if you added it altogether, get pretty heavy and the possible snow load you’ll have on the roof. now the pitch you chose is good and the snow should slide off pretty well. However the most weight will be on the front and back walls of the coop, ie. the nesting box side and the storage side. If you add the materials weight plus the snow load that can be quite significant on the 2x4’s you have supporting the floor. I fit was me, I would add 2x6’s butted up/snugged up right under the perimeter 2x4’s which would give you a 2x8 and that would be a great help and the other would be to add 2x6 - 2x8’s beside each 2x4 floor joists and since you used screws you could actually remove them and use them on another project, then go back and add some joist hangers along with at least one support in the middle of the floor underneath. a jack maybe would help you get the support in place. Just a side note, there is a product called “Through the Roof” that is hands down the best stuff on the market for repairing a hole in a roof. the mastic will not last as long in the heat generated on the roof and maybe just keep that in mind. also I used vinyl sheet flooring on the floor of my coop and it makes for easy cleaning. I hope I helped. I have remodeled my 200 year old house, plumbing, heating and electrical. I also built a 20x24 building, with plumbing, electrical, radiant floor heating system, insulated and finished the inside and it passed inspection, so i do know a little.
@TheArtofDoing

I had wondered what sort of weight this would hold but I kinda figured if it held me walking on the roof I'd be fine. I think I will reinforce with some sister joists and some blocking too. Thanks for the help and the support!!!
