To beat an opponent like this, you have to be better at your game than he is at his game. The problem is that he's extremely good at his game and it's hard for us to accept that we're not as good at our game as we think we are. Our egos want to believe that we're better than he is because we copy the playing style of our idols. For many of us, myself included, this is an unproductive delusion. It is the player that wins or loses and not their playing style.

Ever seen a pusher win a match against aggressive net player with at decent net skills? Even wondered why? By charging the net, you press a pusher that they have to make a pass or a lob. If we disregard the fact that such unorthodoxy can have a terrible effect on your own game, this player does many things right: - he has his eyes on the ball and on his opponent - he varies the placement of his shots both laterally as in terms of depth - he recovers quite well to neutral position with respect to the opponent's location - and despite his highly unusual technique he has good control So I can imagine this is a very tough opponent to beat - it's easy to beat yourself against such a guy. Weapons you need more with such an opponent than with a regular one: smash and driving forehand, on top of a consistent deep topspin game. I don't think mimicking his game, using drop shots and passing shots, is the way to go here. Another thing you can see here is how you become slow in the recovery because of the slow pace of the shots. You need to keep up quick recovery, not for the speed that may come back but because of the odd placement.

Excellent assessment. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You make a good point. If hitting drops regularly isn't part of my game, it may not be a sound strategy for me. I'll have to learn to hit it well first before I use it consistently in a match. Do need to drive the ball more and expect more lobs for an overhead. Good point on recovery - I didn't realize I was slowing down due to the pace of ball. Need to stay on toes and keep going rather than slow down. Thank you for the suggestions.

Good comment. Short (service line) angled shots followed by deep shots to the opposite corner work very well for opponents who dislike the net and will not take advantage of the short ball. The green shirt guy had poor technique but he used what he had very well, making relatively few mistakes, hitting a few accurate in passing shots and mixing in some lobs. If you cannot simply hit him off the court then above strategy is a good one. Alternatively get to the net yourself but be mindful were you hit your approach shot. Often it was hit down the middle with medium depth to a waiting opponent. Too easy. Again, use of short angle may have helped here forcing him hit on the run, hit up to you and making lobbing tough. Also review your net position because he made quite a few successful passes at quite a slow pace.

Like a lot of late beginners the guy in green has developed a style based on his ability to force his opponent to make mistakes. If you're not able to generate enough speed and power to hit winners, there's only one solution: accept long rallies, keep cool, think between rallies, and make him work on his weaknesses. For example at 6.10 the guy in orange comes to the net on a forehand played high on his opponent's backhand, it gives him an easy volley to play. And the dropshots are very efficient too, not so difficult to execute on slow balls at mid court. Easy to say, I've lost so many matches against guys like him.

Very happy to somehow come across this channel and MEP. I remember first running across MEP (Ben) about 10 years ago when he lived in Northern Virginia area. First time we played we only ended up hitting and I thought based on this guys technique that he was only a 3.5 player. Boy how I was wrong! Since then I played MEP (Ben) dozens of times when he lived in Virginia and competed on the local tennis ladder (actatennis). I remember around 8 years ago he finished one season with something like a 42-5 record, beating almost everyone except for 5.0 players and losing once or twice to me (at that time I had been ranked as the #1 4.0 player in mid-atlantic by USTA and was bumped to 4.5). Of course vast majority of the time he would beat me just because to make the long story short even if one has good technique and power you can only generate so much power and control when someone gives you low dropshots or high-lobs for majority of the shots. This guy is a wall and his control is exceptional. Really the only way to attack Ben's game is to take advantage of his relatively weak serve and be a good net player but even then strong hitters like myself can easily commit unforced errors by hitting the ball out.

How can you possibly respect a level of tennis this low? I used to play raquetball with guys like the kid in Orange. They had good looking strokes and actually thought they were good. Would go to tournaments. As a totally non-raquetball player I'd crush them. People don't realize how bad they are at things. Don't humble themselves enough. All they do is hang around with people with similar delusions.

Not gonna lie, I'm glad you didn't lose that first set lol. Green shirt can make matches physical as you say, but I think it works best because he can slow ball but move it all around the court. Notice how he barely has to move at all. He can make it physical for his opponent while doing the least amount of work on his side, because the slowed down pace allows him to literally walk to some of his opponents shots. He then tricks you into thinking you can beat him at net before coming up with consistently, decent paced shots that are easily 40-50% faster than his avg ball; it freezes the opponent. He's tough and frustrating, and as Brad Gilbert says,"winning ugly." Great patience from Orange shirt to deal with this.

@MAELOB
@MAELOB 3 жыл бұрын
However, I don’t think you were pressing his backhand enough- most of your approaches were to his forehand instead of backhand- also you should have pressed his serve more. also it looks that your are not comfortable attacking the net- you were mostly attacking because you had to but you were not really trying to get to the net on your own terms. Guys like that you have to constantly press at net- you have to be relentless - on his serve, on your serve, sneak attacks - bottom line don’t give rhythm and press but overall you did ok.
@TennisTrollChannel
@TennisTrollChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@MAELOB You is correct. I seemed hesitant to come to the net. Needed to commit more. A couple times I did and hit good volleys. I think when the legs wear out and I can move to net net as quick, I feel I'm in a vulnerable position having to hit a half-volley at my knees. More pressure is a good suggestion and thank you for recommending it. Maybe I should have attacked early on often rather than waiting and then getting tired.

There was a guy just like this in my club where I played in my high school days in the 80s. He was an ex- high level squash player, so loved to slice everything and had a huge range of dinky shots and angles, made few mistakes and was fit and fast. We laughed at his unorthodox technique, but playing him in matches was no picnic! Well done on beating green shirt! He’s a much tougher opponent than casual glance would suggest. Your good consistency helps a lot against such pushers, but you need much more pace and penetration on your approaches to press such types. Strong approach shots, decisive net play and work on your overhead. Pushers like him typically have a much weaker backhand especially when pressed for time, so will throw up lobs. Keep making him throw up backhand lobs under pressure and he’ll start to miss his fair share. It’s about making him uncomfortable, same way his game is based on making his opponents uncomfortable! For this strategy, you will need much better finishing power on your overheads. This requires working on your core conditioning and overall fitness. Be prepared for a long day at the office. Start running 5k 2-3x a week. When you can run 5k consistently in 25mins or less, you’ll find big gains in your matches at any level.

Thank you. Well technically I didn't beat green shirt and it was rained out. I guess one could say I was winning but who knows how the second would have gone. 3-3 is a tight set. In my opinion the tennis level was still high so it would have been interesting who may have won. I agree on needing pace and penetration on approach shots. It's tough to create pace sometimes - can easily go for too much and miss, but you is correct. I do need a stronger overhead. He hit some amazing lobs and when when the legs begin to burn, it's hard to get back and accelerate in to the overhead. Perhaps as you said, I need to be in better condition - no doubt. We can all improve our fitness. Leg strength and endurance is a must when playing against players like green shirt. I agree. Thank you for the suggestions and compliments.

For me, I try to surprise green shirt with a drop shot and in my opinion it was more successful. I did miss a couple drop shots in the net that I didn't show on video. I also concur with these points from my own experience, and would like to add a few points: It's easy to fall into the trap of playing "his style" - short swings which lead to easier balls for him to retrieve, so it's good to focus on your own swing. Especially tricky if you try to mix in shorter balls though. Telling yourself that he can't hurt you, but you can only hurt yourself is useful. Since his shots are slow, standing right into the court and taking the time away from his recovery seems to be mostly effective, at the expense of having slightly less time to make your own strokes of course. So this is same as hitting the ball as early as possible - a relaxed full swing is the best if you can manage it, as trying too hard with power and overplaying is the worst thing you can do. Lots of topspin right at their feet can also work OK. Also it's a great opportunity to figure out how to get better in the long run, as these types of players expose weaknesses in your own game really easily.

I had a friend that played exactly like your green shirt. He was a marathon runner with similar push shots and excellent control. He kept the ball low and slow which made it difficult and physically taxing to keep bending down so low to get under the ball and hit topspin with any power. On red clay, I couldn't beat him. I'd typically lose 4-6, 4-6 in a 3 hour marathon and I was ready to burn my rackets. But on hard courts, especially indoor hard courts where the ball moves faster off the surface, he couldn't beat me because I preferred to play serve and volley. In a typical match, I'd win 6-2, 6-2 in about 1 hr. My green guy hated the short points where he couldn't get a steady rhythm of 5- 10 shots per point. He hated being rushed and never knowing what to expect. In two years, he only took 1 set off me on hard courts. I hate to say it, but you might have been lucky that it rained. In those last few games, it appeared that you were slowing down your own shots. You will never outlast green guy by matching his speed of shot and consistency. Green guy would have won 97-95 in 3rd set (lol)

Sometimes court surfaces matter. We see that in the pros and certain pros due better on specific surfaces than others. Not sure how green shirt would do on a faster or slower surface. I'm guessing (my opinion only) that he might prefer a slower surface as I think he wants to use his endurance as a weapon. My guess only - I could be completely wrong. I agree with your last sentence, except I wouldn't be able to play 200 games in the 3rd set. I would have cramped up and passed out long, long before that.

He's super consistent and has the endurance of Super-Man. In my opinion, the key takeaway is to find what works for you. Yes - copy pros to an extent, but in the end, we are not Roger Federer. I used to play a similar style when I started playing 4 years ago. I won my first tournament with ease though there were like 6 players only and I had to play my team mates who were also tournament newbies. At my second tournament which had like 32 or more players I went toe to toe with many experienced players who really had a lot of trouble with this style of play. One of them them also smashed his racquets. Sadly I lost to all three players but the results were pretty amazing for me who only had been holding a racquet for like six months at that point.

I'm here from the essential tennis channel. Well done tennis troll. Toughest part of playing opponents like this is playing within yourself and controlling the points. Always approach strong you'll have plenty of short balls to choose from to attack. Once you get a few like that then you're in their head and it'll get easier as well. Saw you approach strong sometimes but also come in behind some... Well some not so convincing shots.
@TennisTrollChannel
@TennisTrollChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Welcome to TennisTroll. Essential Tennis is awesome. I agree - the approach shots that were strong did favor me (likely to win point). Some of the crosscourt approaches were not as strong and it favored my opponent. Have to be careful which ones I attack and go to net with as green has awesome passing shots and lobs.

green shirt is a nightmare to play against. he's a good athlete and has great sense of the ball. He's like fabrice santoro. slicing and dicing mixing up the pace and make you hit more shots than normal. Have you read brad gilbert's book on playing guys like green shirt? If not, take a look and maybe it can help. Gilbert mentions having to be mentally tough, serve&volley and drawing green shirt into the net etc. but i agree, players like green shirt are the toughest to play against both physically and mentally. Im glad you got the first set. lol

I will almost always lose to this type of player I do not have your skill level, you are able to come in for the short ball but are able to move back quickly to reset. I've played guys like Green Shirt, usually it's a person that's experienced in a different sport (football/soccer/athletics), and thinks to himself: "Hmm, I wonder what happens if I pick up a tennis racket." He doesn't care about how you are "supposed to hit a tennis ball", and because his primary sport is more about endurance and athleticism then being pleasing to the eye, he gives you a hard time. These guys DON'T GIVE A DAMN about how they look, they're just having fun and they're genuinely happy when they win a match. It's an important lesson to learn for all those tennis purists who spend fortunes on coaches who tell them where to put their feet and what swing path their racket should make and where their left pinky should be when they hit an inside out forehand.

It was a retired soccer professional around the age of 40 and quite a famous guy. He didn't know how to play really, but what he was good at was to run. He never gave up a ball. A gum wall. I saw members getting so furious that they smashed their racket on the floor destroying it. Didn't help. Finally he won the club championship.
