Okay, we know these two are the tourist traps 😂 What is the best café in Vienna?

as one who has lived in viennas inner city for 15 years i can recommend these cafes, they have the best melange in vienna: kleines cafe (franziskanerplatz, 1010 vienna), famous in the movie "before sunrise". cafe ritter, mariahilferstrasse, and cafe hawelka, dorotheergasse 6, 1010 vienna

I don't think Cafe Central or Cafe Demel are tourist traps. Demel is pretty famous for cakes and sweets especially Kaiserschmarren, you made the right choice I think!

if you're into being treated (and billed) like a tourist, in a place full of other tourists, enjoy your culinary trip through Innere Stadt, 1st district: that'll keep them in business. please don't get me wrong, there's loads of great restaurants in and around the historic town centre. but if you want to enjoy your _time_ in a more traditional Kaffeehaus, get off the main touristy lanes and find a spot without a dozen tripadvisor-like plaques, without a queue at the door, without picture menus with subtitles in 7 languages. and by _time_ I mean that traditionally, you'd be fine to spend hours just sitting there with your coffee (and the traditional glass of water, 'old school' with free refill), perusing the offered newspapers and magazines, catching up with a friend, read a book, write a book, etc, and maybe occasionally order another coffee, or a little snack. it's a place to spend time at. that's been the whole thing about Kaffeehäuser in the first place. a famous quote goes like "the Kaffeehaus is a place for people who want to be left alone, but not without company" ("Im Kaffeehaus sitzen Leute, die alleine sein wollen, aber dazu Gesellschaft brauchen")
@GutnarmEVE2 жыл бұрын
PS: case in point: cafe central. that piano tries to distract from all the people yelling over eachother. a traditional Kaffeehaus is almost as quiet as a library: a little quiet talk, the burr of a coffee grinder, the woooosh of milk being steamed. the occasional phone going off to everyone else's annoyance :)

What a great quote! We can’t wait to check out more traditional Kaffeehäuser next time! Definitely sounds more relaxing and enjoyable 😆

Sounds like such a peaceful ambiance! And much better than Cafe Central 😅

Good for you! I hate dry cakes! Regards from Argentina!

Good to hear, we only went to Demel. Ordered almost the same except my wife got the pancake with plum sauce instead of the strudel. Fun video.

Wow, the plum sauce sounds amazing! We will have to try that next time! Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it 😁

Good idea to compare both cafés. The Sacher torte at Central Café looked definitely dry and I did NOT like the huge amount of froth on the Melange (in fact, I hate froth, period). Loved the warm custard with the strudel at Demel. One word about the concept of "expensive". If I am spending two or three thousand dollars on a nice holiday in a beautiful city like Vienna I want to experience it at its best. To judge a café or a restaurant only by the bill (assuming that the food was very good, of course) without taking into consideration the magnificent and unique setting is to be: A) A moron and B) A pathetic miser. Good for you for taking that into consideration! Regards.

Cafe Central is only touristy, Demel is also touristy but certainly they also have the quality to justify it.

That definitely tracks with what we experienced. Good to know for when we come back!

I was just at Cafe Central last week and thought the Sacher-torte was too dry (almost stale) and their Cafe Central torte was very dry. The Raspberry 3 layer cake was fresh and good. The eiskaffee was good. We passed Demel but didn't get to go in. Thanks for the taste test.
@MaxandSidney2 жыл бұрын
No problem! We had similar feelings about the sachertorte, a little underwhelming to be honest. Very cool interior though! We loved Demel, it’s worth checking out next time!
@paulybarr2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I had the sachertorte at Demel's four years ago and could see, even before I tasted it, that it was a dry as hell. Beautiful ambiences and there are are many other delicious deserts and cakes, but, if you're expecting a moist cake ( as most of us are), the sachertorte is definitely a disappointment. I'd say the strudel looks pretty dry too.

Probably quite a useful video for American tourists. Apple strudel is available all over Central Europe, areas previously part of the Austro Hungarian empire, eg northern Italy, or even parts of Ukraine.

We absolutely loved apple strudel! And there are definitely many places to find it! Didn’t know it stretched that far though, what an awesome delicacy 😋

@@MaxandSidney And not only Apple strudel! In Milan and other places you can find cherry strudel in addition to Apple strudel. Worth trying!

OK guys, the cake with the cream endnote separately. The whole thing is not about drinking and eating and moving to the next one. It is about reading, debate and meeting people.
@MaxandSidney Жыл бұрын
For that, Cafe Central would probably be better! Although, a smaller cafe somewhere out of the city center might be better than both!

Hiya. Do you think Americans will ever learn how to use a dessert fork AND spoon both at the same time?😄 I do understand they have to master a knife and fork first, though. And sorry? Filo Dough? It's Filo Pastry. I do like your vlogs, btw. Stay safe. All the best to you.

We honestly never knew there were rules to how to use utensils! Typical Americans, I guess 😂 Thanks for watching and for the well wishes! 👍

Trust me there are a lot more good tasting Torten besides Sachertorte. In my Opinion it is really not the best - others are a lot better. I never would eat Sachertorte - it’s only for tourists. Love from Austria 🇦🇹

I do agree with you; besides it looks boring. I would prefer a Mozart torte or a wonderful German Black Forest cake, YUM! 😋😋😋PS: I also love the strudel (if it comes with vanilla ice cream even better! 😁😁😁

@@MaxandSidney you'll see cranberry jam listed in many an english menu, even though it's lingonberry jam: while a close relative to the cranberry (and blueberry), it has a different flavor profile, and happily grows over here. it's mostly an error in translation that got copied over and over for decades, even in times of google translate on the ubiquitous smartphone. ...because nobody really cares for such details, I guess
