While I understand what you are saying, I disagree to an extent. A lot of the records he showed in the video are relatively old. Being an older record the care and condition is vastly different. Sure you could buy one on ebay and hope for the best but you really have no idea how that record was played or taken care of. This guy offers a professional opinion and what looks like a delicate process to determine the best sounding records. I respect that. If I could afford it, and had the equipment to tell the difference, I would buy them.

Tom Port has been a controversial figure in the audiophile community for a long time. He used to be a traditional record dealer specializing in audiophile reissues like those from Classic Records. Now in order to push his theory on the supremacy of his pressings he writes "reviews" of these reissues he used to sell, bashing them. Michael Fremer called him on his bs once, and compared Tom's $400 pressing of an RCA album against a $30 dollar analogue productions reissue (very good reissue label) on his million dollar system and said the reissue beat the hot stamper. To be fair, different runs and stampers of the same original pressings do have sonic differences, especially when they were big selling albums that got pressed at multiple pressing plants. Discovering these sonic differences for most people is part of the rabbit hole of this hobby. Tom just charges a huge commission doing the stuff that a lot of collectors do on their own for fun. You aren't paying for the records, you're paying for Tom to be a nerdy record collector for you. For me, that would kinda take the fun out of the hobby.

So if these records are taken in from standard widespread releases, then it's really a luck of the draw. You can either spend $20ish on a record that may or may not be a "Hot Stamper" (god I hate that term) or give this guy $TooMuch when he claims he has "found" the best quality record. That is, of course, if any of what he claims about "Hot Stampers" is true, which it likely is not.

With the ironing board set up I place the record on the board I choose the steam blast setting and getting close to the vinyl with it and blast hot steam all over. Then using an anti static cloth clean the record going with the groove direction. Gets rid of any muck between the grooves very effectively. Try it!

I think I may have purchased an LP from Better Records (Fat Mattress's debut LP) in the 80's before their prices became prohibitive (to some). In 45 years of collecting records, I generally don't find all that much difference between different pressings of any given LP Different sound systems tend to favor different balances and it all tends to even out IMHO. The two things I find paramount 1) purchase the cleanest copy of an LP you can find that has had minimal play and 2) purchase the best turntable, arm and cartridge you can afford. And beware the record that was left in a hot car. I purchased a Mobile Fidelity pressing of Abbey Road from and eBay heavy hitter - he literally has sold tens of thousands of LP's. As soon as I took it out of the sleeve I knew what was wrong. These "heat exposed" LP's have a waxy sheen and as soon as the needle hits the groove, there is a constant, never ending "roar" of surface noise. He agreed to take it back but I didn't want the hassle and discarded it. But how he could have sold that and have the rating he has is beyond me. Needless to say, I will not repeat with that seller. But everything in life is relative. If someone hears the difference between different "pressings" and that is important to them, then by all means go for it. But $1,300 for a copy of Led Zeppelin II? I have a mint Mobile Fidelity LZ II I purchased from a friend who when he unloaded his entire vinyl collection 25 years ago uttered the words: "if I never hear another click or pop in my life, it will be worth selling my collection for pennies on the dollar." I paid $2.00. MINT! LOL.

I only have vinyls that I love...Just like I did in the 90's with the cassettes/cds..In my opinion, I love to go to record shops and get new and old/used vinyls. It reminds me of my childhood in the 80's..my mom always cleaned the house and always had a record on..I love the pops here and there etc...this sounds similar to that guy who has the world record for vinyls. I sometimes buy a record for 40..but not for hundreds.

A hi - end audio salesman once told me that sound quality is all down to your own hearing capabilities, no two peaople have identical hearing. His advice to me was to listen to as many different systems as possible, using your own preferred type of music. He also let me take a different system home each week, for a small deposit, so that i could listen to them in the environment in which they would be regularly used. As i was on a limited budget i didn't have the luxury of separate music & theater rooms. I emded up buying a Marantz SR5007 receiver with Jamo S426 floorstanders, S420 surround speakers and Marantz sub. Have been happily listening to music (analogue and digital) and movie soundtracks for approx. 6 years now with no complaints at all. By the way, when i was test "driving" all this gear, amongst it all was equipment from Cambridge Audio, Mission Speakers, Polk, Nad, Pioneer etc, i simply chose which system sounded better to me.

The most expensive record l'd bought was a 'Live' Boxset of Led Zeppelin's 'How The West Was Won', (which was released on vinyl this year) which cost me $184.00, and you can get this 'Live' Led Zeppelin album on CD (released back in 2003) for $25.99.

Music is my whole life! I love music, I love playing guitar, I love collecting vinyl and I love going to concerts. I've been cranking vinyl records and cranking my Fender Deluxe Reverb amp for over 40 years and I've also been to over 2000+ rock concerts. Could I still hear the difference between the $5 copy of the first Santana album and the $500 copy? Probably not.

It's one thing charging that kind of price for a rare and obscure prog rock LP from the 1970s where maybe no more than a few hundred copies were pressed (and the album is great), but I would not pay that price for common titles that happened to be cleaned on super expensive equipment. I've been known to spend a couple hundred bucks on an LP but it was because it was a very rare prog or Krautrock LP from the '70s, not something like from Santana. I own the debut LP from Santana, original 360 Sound Columbia label pressing, but it was only $5 and not likely ever cleaned on such expensive equipment (nothing likely more expensive than a DiscWasher).

Can't argue that they might have the best sounding pressings... but prices are way beyond my wallet! And honestly, I don't have either the equipment (or hearing sensitivity) to actually noticed the difference between a good shape copy and their "stamped copies".

If one can afford the a White Hot Stamper vinyl, one needs an obscenely expensive sound system to do justice to these expensive vinyls. The emphasis is on sound quality right?

I know there are people who have so much money that Better Records' prices are nothing to note and they have no difficulty in paying it is okay for me. It may seem a little ridiculous to pay so much money for a regular record but just to congratulate Tom Port for finding his niche in this world. By the way, I wash my used records 3-4 times before playing the first time and always looking for better pressing with better sound.

As long as a record isn't completely scratched up or worn out, it can be brought back to life with a careful wash in the sink using dish soap. And I doubt that individual records differ that much from each other to justify such insane prices.

I have been collecting lp’s since the early 60’s. I have never payed that kind of money, but wish I could. Could is the key word or maybe it’s money, perhaps quality. It is all relative or is it subjective? Here’s an example of how I roll: I recently bought a copy of ‘200 Motels’ a classic by Zappa and The Mothers from ‘71. That’s 1971 and this is the Soundtrack lp on the Bizarre/United Artists label. Now there are a few distinctions that could be made (but I will not make) as I may already have gone too far. I paid-$2,500 - not on your life okay - $250 no way in hell - okay $25 - that’s much more like it, no I paid only $18 in a used book store for a clean, near mint, free of scratches and a cover to just die for, both disks included and only driven on Sunday. If you would like to hear more of my adventures, let me know.

The dude essentially provides a service to those aficionados. If people want to pay that price for a service they feel is worth it, then by golly, go right ahead and do it. As long as they stand behind their product. I imagine if I had a ton of expendable cash and always wanted a guaranteed pristine copy of a record, then I would probably go there. Especially if the records are first pressings. Not for your average collector or listener, but hey, there's obviously a market for it. I'm sure people wonder why I buy the old ridiculous obsolete stuff that I buy too. It might not make sense to everyone, but to those that it does make sense to, they're the only ones that need to care.

Jared what is the most $ you have ever spent on a record? I try to stay within the $50 range but sometimes I get roped into the allure of special limited pressings, colored releases or beautiful box sets. Recently I picked up Pixies Minotaur on Discogs which set me back a few clams but damm it was worth it!

I don't know. If I lived in a country where record stores where few and far between and could afford it I might had considered it to get my favourite record in a great condition. I have been to thriftstores and found records that I would consider hot stampers, where the music was more lively and the background instruments and harmonics are much less distorted than on the typical copy. But I have also bought dozens of records that was really dull. I've even bought first pressing that sounds bad even though they've been mint looking. I don't know, if I had the money I might have tried, especially since the have the money-back guarantee

that's just crazy prices. I guess because they lived out California they could sell records to the goofballs that price. I live in the Midwest and you can find great albums that have never been played with only a couple of times for anywhere between $5 all the way up to $200. I like to clean my albums sure I'm not going to sit with headphones on and listen to the same album on different vinyls trying to figure out which one sounds better. but like I said that they're happy and they got the customers more power to them

They claim to A/B compare many albums, and they pick the one they feel sounds the best. That seems perfectly acceptable since hearing is purely subjective. They also offer very detailed descriptions of flaws within each album if any exist, and they offer a money back guarantee which includes S&H. They also post and have a home address where they are located. I think they deserve the opportunity to be proven right or wrong for all of those reasons, and criticism should be reserved for those who have actually purchased one of their albums and listened to it on your own system. For me, I would need to go through a record shoot-out at their place to see if I truly hear the separation in overall sound from one album to the next using their system. If I hear something extraordinary on one specific album leaving all of the others audibly behind, I'll happily become a believer. The same holds true for cable comparisons, speaker wire claims, and power conditioning unit claims across the industry. I am always open to being convinced through my own hearing. Clearly, and they made this assertion on one album description (a Beatles album), you should only purchase albums from them if you own a very high end system. Only then will your equipment be able to flush out the subtle nuances and intricate details within the grooves of one of their albums and give you a legitimate opportunity to truly assess their claims and form an accurate conclusion.

I think if I was to have gotten that into vinyl, I would be learning cleaning techniques/products/equipment as I went along and also buying/saving for equipment that I felt I needed to get the sound I was looking for. That's who I am, I like to work through the quality process, which takes a lot of time and effort. Not everyone has luxury or even the want to learn all of those things, they just want the product, perhaps because they have more money than time. Then there's the rich and lazy who don't care about the record, music or any of the blah blah blah, it's expensive so they want it... Lots of different reasons and I can see where it fits into the scheme of things.
