Having worked with carbon fiber for 12 years, I can say, the polish you got out of that panel is phenomenal. Often, I've had to polish material samples for testing, and only a handful of times have I gotten that 3d effect. Awesome!

As an admirer of your channel and also SCG, it's delightful to see even more behind the scenes of this marvel, please do more of these! In my past years as a Formula SAE team member I had a fair share of messing around with carbon parts, so I wanted to give my 2 cents about the sanding process. If you sand the panels and the dust coming out of it is dark, then you're sanding the actual fibers and not just the resin, which is clear. This is especially true on prepreg carbon as there's no excess resin and the result will be a shiny surface full of broken fibers, which may look bad if you look close enough. The only way around this, if the parts don't come out perfect from the mold, is to have an extra layer of resin or clear coat before sanding. It goes against the principle of prepreg, yes, but a thin layer should be enough to give even better results and preserve a perfect weave. Koenigsegg managed to sort this out in their Regera without adding layers, if I recall correctly, but I can't imagine how time-consuming it must be.

Watching cars being detailed on video has got to be one of the most therapeutic experiences of my life. There’s just something special about the entire process. The before and after shots are nostalgic. Had to share that with the world. Keep up the good work, Ammo!
@ajbrooks99103 жыл бұрын
Some friendly advice when detailing graphite composite parts: that black residue at 11:47 in the video that is wiping up after sanding is the actual graphite fibers, not just resin. This step is technically causing some minor damage to the graphite composite part. While using a very fine grit sandpaper will minimize cutting into these fibers, you will want to mitigate this damage as much as possible if all graphite parts in the future cars from glickenhaus will be made to have a minimal resin finish in the layup process. Ideally the glickenhaus team should try to adjust the layup to have a slightly resin rich finish on this surface of the part so you can then lightly sand/abrade the resin only during detailing to get that very smooth mirror like finish you have mastered and leave the graphite fibers 100% intact. A simple single layer of the same resin film added to the graphite layup process on this surface of the laminate could easily mitigate this problem. Just wanted to share some info with you guys on graphite composite parts. I really enjoy watching this channel and think your work is stellar Larry! Keep’em comin! 👍

aren't most raw carbon finishes on production cars still shot with clear? How long does simply polishing direct carbon fiber last? Would think it would dull fast in the elements and need constant upkeep.

Hi Larry. Its a good thing that you making carbon fiber part prettier, but there is a major drawback. Once you saw an off-grey or black dust(while polishing) it means that you have hit through the bottom(i mean carbon fiber- CF). Main rule working CF: NEVER POLISH THROUGH ACTUAL CF! Its crucial moment, because once you polished off the CF there is a potential place where crack will occur, where water will enter the part and delaminate the whole part!

Does the prepreg have special uv resistant additives because raw resin is usually prone to yellowing when left exposed? I’m very impressed with the level of gloss you got because you will have raw carbon and resin exposed (as shown by the black residue) which usually leaves a slight matte finish because the carbon strands prevent gloss.
