Yeah consoles generally got worse and ps2 playing dvds started the trend, while costing less than ps3. I am glad pc hybrids have gotten better now, as first party stopped making non-Mario games (and limited run games/gamestop being a physical joke, with pc game pass replacing xbox's lack of physicals) in general let alone ps plus premium is too expensive just to play demos that pc does and online multiplayer, for free. Just an expensive start that pays for itself in versatile storefronts, less censorship, an early access notification before buying, and rom hacks. Not sure how mobile is hanging in but they got their whales. I thought mobile would be the future for handheld though I feel they are limited to simpler games and the energy meters hurt its value though many like with consoles, settle for less, as spiderman 2 selling 11M copies despite bugs and bad writing did.

Interesting to note is also that all those digital-only titles in the Nintendo eShop on the Switch are not counted by Nintendo towards Software sales. If they were, then the Switch would probably already had overtaken the PS2 a long time ago...

That's nice but there are some errors: Most the of the consoles report game sales even after Lifespan ended. The lastest numbers from those discontinued consoles and their date: PS1 in March 2007, PS2 and PSP in March 2012, PS3 in March 2019, Wii in March 2021, DS in September 2022 and 3DS in March 2024. Also, Super Mario World was popular on the SNES, not NES and you have the wrong gif for Super Mario 64.

I have 44 Playstation 2 games, the last ones I played were Gran Turismo 5 and GTA 4 on Playstation 3... I was stuck in the past and it's one of the best memories I'll never regret! I haven't played new games since 2012

Now do one but with the ratio of "game sold to consoles sold" i.e. "catchment rate". PS2 sold 1,537,000,000 per roughly 158,000,000 which is a ratio of 9.72 PS4 sold 1,419,500,000 per roughly 117,200,000 which is a ratio of 12.11 Switch sold 1,235,820,000 per roughly 141,320,000 which is a ratio of 8.74 So, even though PS2 has sold more games in total, it also sold more consoles, whereas PS4 sold more games _per_ system, which in my opinion is a better comparison.

That's just one way of seeing it, because whereas the PS2 had 160+ games that sold 1 million+ copies; the PS4 (just like the PS3) only has about 40 games that sold 1 million+ copies... at least if Wikipedia's numbers are anything to be trusted... So the PS2 had more popular games that most wanted to play... and while I don't know PS4's games sales numbers, if 1,419,500,000 is correct, then that means PS4 may be selling more games per system, but the vast majority of those games aren't even selling 1 million copies...

Can the Switch put Nintendo back on top for the first time in over 20 years, or will the PS5 be able to catch up and continue Sony's reign of dominance over the venerable 130+ year old company that single-handedly saved the entire industry 40 years ago? The recent barrage of Pokemon games has certainly helped Nintendo, but they need to get back on top before GTA 6 comes out. ...speaking of the sixth game in a series, isn't it about time to start thinking about Super Smash Bros. 6? Mario Kart 9, maybe? Pikmin 5? Even a revival of the Star Fox series? Nintendo has so many options.

It should be noted that the entire launch library, and a large number of subsequent game releases for the Odyssey2 were written by a single coder...who was not even a coder, but an Intel salesman. He single-handedly kept the Odyssey2 in 2nd place behind Atari for many years until the system was discontinued with the video game crash, and Phillips exited the video game space. His name was Ed Averett and he deserves a spot in the video game hall of fame and an honourable mention here.

The Wii outsold the 360 and the PS3 so those numbers are wrong. The 360 numbers sold has an asterisk on it because most bought more than 1 because of the red ring of death.

It's game sales, not console sales. A lot of people bought a Wii, but many didn't buy more than a couple of games, if that. Many were happy just to play Wii Sports.

I don’t think the ps2 being still up there is crazy since the final number of its console sales were around 160 million. What’s crazy to me is that the master system sold not only more games than the genesis, which sold possibly 35-40 million consoles, whereas the master system sold possibly as many as about 21 million. So with roughly half as many consoles sold, not only did the sega master system still out sell the genesis on game sales but held the last spot on this list even into 2024. Unless this was all a big typo and that’s supposed to be the sega genesis, that would make more sense to me lol
