I went with Jerry to the Great American Music Hall in SF in 1972 to see Joe Pass and Howard Roberts. While he didn’t sound like a jazzer, he was really influenced by jazz which comes out in his arpeggios and chromatic runs. He loved all styles of music and loved to play. Great guitarist.

Used to mow Joe Pass' yard when he moved into his Van Nuys home around 1971. Hung out at Dantes (jazz club) on Lankershim, and Monday was guitar nite, for two $1.75 drinks you could nurse them and stay all night. Ya, Lee Ritenhour used to play on Monday too, HE WAS THE BEST ROCK GUITAR PLAYER I EVER SAW. Mr. Pass had a heart of gold and was probably brought to this planet by aliens, his talent was completely off the charts and there's plenty of his work to show for it. I was the fly on the wall and never knew how lucky I was.

Jerry played using a lot of triad and dyads. The Allmans did this as well. Guitar players from Africa and others use similar techniques played in intervals of 3rds and 6ths.

I'm almost 50, been playing since I was 13 or 14 on and off. My early learning was the major "cowboy" chords, and when it came to playing lead I would try to pick notes out of these chords into some sort of passable melody. Used to think I was being stupid until I started learning some scales and saw how the two correlate. Now I'm still not a great guitar player by any means but I'm glad I didn't ignore this aspect of lead playing and still lean on it sometimes. Thank you for pointing out that Jerry didn't either. Great playing btw, and nice Strat.

Well done. On one of Dicks Picks from 76 Jerry plays Minglewoods solo with chords predominantly one night and through individual notes the next. Interesting to hear the difference, what a great player.

I got a chuckle regarding your comment about hearing a song while driving on Rt 290 in Worcester, Mass. since I grew up in Worcester and I remember as a kid Rt. 290 being built! :) I agree that it is unusual and appealing to hear a guitarist using chords to make a solo. It makes for a fuller and more unique sound.

Just read an article about Elizabeth Cotton who moved to Syracuse in 1978... The Dead would always visit her when they came to town. Jerry would do a few of her songs & reference her as a big influence on him.

Bobbys chord inversion and leading chord tones are like the matched book ends to Jerrys. Bobbys brilliant chording is Often over looked in that sense.

Harder they Come as a great example of this. I like how he plays a solo with building intensity and then often breaks out the chord solo after you can’t imagine it going on any longer. It doesn’t work as well if you have too much distortion too, or too little. Enough to get some crunch but not so much that you lose the sound of the individual strings.

The first 2 tones of this solo are single note. This is the signal for the audience to listen on the melody. Chords follow. The audience now recognize the melody in the chords.

wow....the youtube algorithm really gets it right sometimes. And the intro had me choking on my coffee laughing....also been there, almost literally as I grew up in RI but went to college in VT, drove among others a white vdub (71 westfalia with pancake engine) but instead of Pass (I would learn about him eventually, just wasn't my first wow moment with jazz and improv) it was Pat Metheney, Jaco and Weather Report. Pat M is another great example of soloing w chords, of course he was influence by Pas for sure. I wonder how many kids I used to kick around the parking lot scenes at Dead shows are here on youtube making great content like this? Anyway, awsome to have found this channel this AM, really cool discussion too.

Well, a better example would be Jimi Hendrix on tunes like Little wing. The first thing you played may not qualify as playing solo and rhythm together, because solo meaning alone, or single implies one note at a time, and just two notes at the same time (AKA double stops or dyads), makes it a chord. Playing one chord at a time, changing any number of notes even one of a chord, still gives you a chord. If done often with keeping the roots of chords intact, it does add a melody line, but it's way more effective and interesting when the melody line has more fractions than the the base chords of the rhythm. On the other hand I don't think there is an official word for it. So, "Simultaneous rhythm and melody" is more to the point and explanatory. If there is an official musical term for it, and someone knows it, then reply with it, so more of us can know it.

Robert I think that generally speaking in rock pop jazz (and so on) music culture a "solo" is when a player in the band does some written part, or improvisation, or reprise of the melody, or a virtuoso part, i.e. he or she attracts the audience attention, while the rest of the band continues the accompainment and works for him or her. So I think that Jeff is to the point because he focuses in how many ways that player may do the job. In my humble opinion soloing it's not a question of one, two notes, single, alone, tryads, chords. Soloing is emphasizing and concentrating the material of a song while coming out in front to the audience, and you may do this even playing chords. But I may also have misunderstood your comment because I'm italian and I may have not got your point right! In this case I apologize

Wish these guys would GET that it would be helpful to stop using camera angles that send the headstock off into the upper-right corner. we waste SO f_ckin much time trying to decipher fingerings that aren't straigh-shot on . At least Haugen is more useful that way.
