Why is it so easy to create some habits but so tough to create others? The typical advice out there-practise something consistently over a certain period of time, such as 21 days-doesn’t always work. And when this seemingly reasonable formula doesn’t work for us, it can be incredibly demoralizing. It turns out that there’s an important piece missing, a piece that can make the whole process of habit-building so much easier.

What I tell people is to abandon negativity. This is the real progress killer. Yes I think small goals are a great way of establishing a reward loop. PR’s for example. They give people opportunities for a lock and key feedback that provides good feelings. That said, 99% of people, who fail often, fail because they motivate themselves with negative feedback, and then come to associate healthy routines with negative feelings. The difference between “I only went to the gym twice this week, I’m a screw up.” And “I went to the gym twice this week and that is awesome. It felt so good. When I go three times it’s gonna feel even better.” Is NIGHT and DAY. The person who takes the first approach comes to dread the gym, as it reminds them of failure. The person who takes the second approach develops a greater affection and respect for themselves, which in turn drives healthy pattern building. At the end of the day it’s not fundamentally strictly about habits, it’s about your relationship with yourself. The rest follows.

Building habits via dopamine is a great way to create that positive mindset and to improve our view of ourselves. Thank for watching.
