“You can’t shoot 300 with a spare.” -Michael Tang This type of wisdom shouldn’t be free lol
@williamrandall37862 жыл бұрын
And no one in history has shot a 300 at a pace of even 1 in every 250 games over a 2 year period
@stephenwalker69802 жыл бұрын
@@williamrandall3786 Fero Williams has 135 sanctioned 300 games and is only 31 years old, if your statement is accurate, that would add up to around 35,000 competitive games.

As a High School bowling coach I can definitely attest to the importance of spares. We have won and lost several matches and tournaments by a handful of pins. Stringing strikes is important but relies on a lot of variables (pin carry, transition, etc). We have more control over our spare game. Also, if you think of it from a mental standpoint, being a poor spare shooter will effect your strike game. Instead of focusing on the shot, you’ll be thinking to yourself “please don’t leave a 10 pin”.
@atbsigma2 жыл бұрын
This is very true. Ultimately none of those pros got to where they were without a solid spare game. But then they learned how to navigate the conditions out there and started striking. Without certain types of balls to control the pocket, those spare games may come into play a little bit more this WSOB!!!

The biggest thing is leaving spares that can be picked up. If you constantly strike and leave massive splits it will kill you

I don't know, I've seen quite a few people lose in the stepladder on tv due to missing spares. Seems to me spares are pretty darn important. Leads sure do shrink fast when you leave an open frame up on the board.

My daughter bowls in Kev’s summer league and every week he is all over her if she misses a spare. This shit had me rolling but I can attest Keven is ALWAYS preaching spares. Always. 😂

Bowled in my first tournament in 15 years at the San Diego USBC Masters yesterday and shot 1273 over 6 games. I was on a strikefest early, but oddly missed 4 single pin spares through my first 12 frames, then proceeded to stike 7 in a row. My spare game was relatively clean the rest of the way, but I missed the Top 8 Round Robin by 27 pins in a very talented field. I also had my personal tournament high game of 270. To Kevin's point, making more strikes is one way to avoid missing spares, but to your point making those spares and filling frames when you don't strike is key to win! As my old bowling coach in high school said "Make your spares!"
@DavidBeals052 жыл бұрын
I would agree with Keven, spares don't become as important when you can consistently throw an 8 in a row. But, if you can't throw a large number of strikes in a row, then spares are at a premium because you need all the pins that you can get.
@bobbyburtonphotography2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I don’t care who you are, throwing eight in a row is not easy.
@Dima-ASMR2 жыл бұрын
The thing that's the most important factor is that leaving an open frame makes you lose tons of scoring potential. Sure striking each time will rack up points but I've won league games with less strikes than my opponents purely because they had more opens than I. Close your frames for gains!!

Usually these videos have one or two really funny moments to single out in the comments, but the last 4-5 minutes of this thing had me rolling. I can't pick the funniest part. O'Neill's comment about titles and doubles tournaments maybe the best of them all. A.J. trying to do math. Osku's dad-wave at the camera while they were practicing. Simo's reaction to the spare question, Mikey with the 300 comment. This was pitch-perfect, all of it.

Ah the classic debate. I think it's worded better if you say: Anyone can strike, but not everyone can pick up spares. That is what I tell all of my youth bowlers. The quickest way to raise your score is to make your spares. I definitely understand what you were trying to say though. If your going to try competing on the PBA, you had better know how to strike.

I usually don't comment on videos on KZbin but I have to say this is one of the best videos I've ever watched involving the bowlers. All we ever get to see on TV is the serious high pressure nerve and ego fracturing side of bowling these tournaments bring and to see these awesome personalities come out on camera is just content gold. Videos like these will keep bringing youth bowlers into the sport and show how fun bowling can truly be, even on tour. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

I think of it as find a way to Knock as many pins down as possible on every throw.
@jasonsmith35372 жыл бұрын
I will say this..... if you can hook those spares that's accuracy training!! As a lefty, anything I might leave to the right of the headpin in practice I always hook to it and try to hit it (or one of them) head on. Lot of times I try to go through the oil and bring it back...It really helps me with adjusting my ball speed and hitting what I want. It HAS helped me in the long run when I am trying to dial in... If anything....it is a great accuracy power up for people learning to bowl...

Spares at a younger level is more important than throwing strikes, but at the professional level everybody can spare where the hardest part is throwing the 5-6 bagger. He isn’t right but hes not wrong 🤣. Make your spares!!

The more strikes you throw, the fewer spares you have to shoot. The more spares you miss, the more doubles you need to make up for those misses just to break even. Make the spares so stringing strikes don't go to waste.

both sides have a say in it. simo is an example of being able to throw an 8 bagger, which will already create a high score and the spares arent AS important as if the spares are spread all around the game (thats when you need to cover the spares). but of course in general spares are important. if you have the front 8 and cover spares in the end, thatll give you a much higher score than if you missed the spares. and like mikey said, as funny as it sounds, “you cant shoot 300 with spares”. hes not wrong about that hahahaha. great video!

This is an incredible debate, one that is happening in most pro sports right now. MLB: a single isn’t that important since you reduce your chance to score, so more hitters are lofting the ball for max performance. NBA: shooting a 2 pointer is outdated and you’re losing a possible point by not shooting a 3. NFL: aggressive air attacks give a higher probability to score 7 instead of 3. Coaches have even opted to pass more often on 4th down instead of punting in fear of losing those 7 points. Would make sense

I mean how many titles has Norm won because someone else missed the 10 pin?

Hate to say it but Kevin is saying what I think most league bowlers and concourse coaches believe. Even though you’ll hear that Strike for show Spares for dough stuff, these pros make you strike to be in the conversation. And most of us league bowlers don’t feel good if we aren’t striking
@bryqi22292 жыл бұрын
Yeah you need strikes for points but where are those strikes coming from if you can’t be expected to make a spare? you need to be as accurate if not more accurate to hit a single pin than to hit the pocket for a strike. Strikes put you in the race, spares solidify it.
