Most Immersive VR Game | VTOL VR Full Game Review

I have close to a $700 invested in DCS, not to mention an expensive HOTAS, expensive rudder pedals, and a rig that'll run DCS fairly well in VR, yet I spend the vast majority of my flight sim time in VTOL VR. The reason is that in VTOL your hands are YOUR HANDS, and that totally transforms the experience from a "visual in the cockpit" experience to an actual "being in the cockpit" experience. Until you try it you may not understand how big the immersion improvement is over other DCS and the like. The only issue that I have with your review is that you only gave it 9 out 10.

Exactly the same situation for me. Another big plus is that I’ve been able to get friends to buy vtol vr. Was never able to convince anyone to get DCS because how hard it is to get into for someone not into aviation.

I have a lot invested in DCS too but never had the time to learn the modules properly, just last night I spent 2 hours learning A-G in the f16, after which I was thinking I could have been shooting shit in VTOLVR all that time.

Maybe if Boundless Dynamics somehow optimized this to run on the Quest 2 more people could enjoy it for what it is. I think the physics simulation would cripple the Quest 2 so maybe that wouldn't work.

I'm surprised this game isn't held up as VR's 'killer app'. Not just in terms of being a really well balance flight sim that caters to novices and more experienced players, but also in terms of the simply genius UI design. I think it's just on the wrong side of viable to be ported to Quest 2, but if it was......dayum.

I was hesitant too. I tried a cracked version to see how the tutorials were made. I purchased the game after 3hrs of gameplay. Absolute gem in the VR space, and for softcore aviation simulation enjoyer like myself. I have to press buttons, but not a 15 min checklist before take-off, which is nice. I just wish they will add a tutorial for comms, it is quite hard to guess what to say or what to understand when the tower scramble words like "alpha zulu 6 cold temper sandwich check your north"

Same here, cracked the game, tried playing it, couldn't get past the tutorial, leave it for a year, oh hey this new game called vtol vr is picking up wait a minute I already have it? Learn how to play it, discover there is a modding community, decide to buy the game because of the mods, now I have the official multiplayer Tl;Dr I pirated vtol, couldnt play it for a year, then bought it for mods and then got the official multiplayer and heli dlc Buy vtol, don't pirate it.

It's a great game and very approachable for a casual flight sim people. DCS has better graphics and has more realistic sim attributes, but those features will either overwhelm a casual simmer(like me) and/or your PC. VTOL VR does a great job at balancing it all to make it a great VR game.

I absolutely love this game. It's so immersive, especially with the trainer jet DLC with a friend (which really isn't a trainer jet, it's closer to an F-16B), and I found it was so much easier to learn to fly and be effective than in something like DCS

I can agree, this game is the most wonderfully immersive experience, getting into dogfights with other players gets the adrenaline pumping, and you'll never feel better than yelling "FOX-3!" And pulling the trigger.

One thing worth pointing out is that by going with semi fictional aircraft rather than real ones they are able to tune things much better to the VR tools. Instruments and text are larger than real versions to make up for the display limitations. It feels more real that DCS, simply because I can actually read the symbology like I am supposed to. It is the perfect blend of simulation of the stuff you want to feel real (though somewhat simplified so nothing feels like a chore), while adjusting the stuff that isn't important to make it work well with relatively low end hardware.

Baha has done a great job on creating this game. I agree with the in game tutorials, I wish they could get some attention but the community has definitely made up for it with flight schools, guides and even people willing to fly with you and teach you.

Great review! most of our members actually play more VTOL VR than DCS or Falcon BMS. Maybe the game is more simplified and the graphics not as DCS but it immerse and with the right players can be more immersive and fun.

vtol vr is probably the best flight Sims I've played. It's at that perfect spot of having complex systems that are easy to learn. It's the only vr game that's actually had me grabbing at stuff to brace for impact. 11/10. I'm gon a set up a dedicated area for vtol vr soon It's so good.

This is the game I bought VR for. 0 regrets. Videos cannot do it justice but it is amazing. Planes feel great to fly, just complex enough to be rewarding to use but easy enough to learn fast and visual style that makes everything easy to see in vr. Buy vr, buy this game you will not regret it.

For those that do not like the hand strain and lack of precision using virtual stick, I recently bought something called "ProTas", which is a magnetic holder of right controller to snap to your chair so that you get some form of arm rest and it also help with flight precision. Judging by its appearance, especially its tail, the helicopter is probably based the RAH-66 Comanche. Only two were ever built.

After further looking into it. You're definitely right about the tail piece and majority body structure. The top is really the only identifier to an apache.

I believe the RAH Comanche also used joystick for yaw instead of rudder pedals like the AH-94 does in game.

@@braapbreak7536 I'm gonna up this correction by a bit. The AH-94 is actually based of the Bell 360 Invictus. Which is a proposed new helicopter design based on the comanche. There have been some updates to the design but the one that's currently shown on wikipedia seems to be the closest to the AH-94. The only thing I'm still confused about with AH-94 is that it does handle like an apache. Which is weird cause the Bell 360 invictus is supposed to be fly by wire.

Interesting.. I do wonder how this would be compared to Ace Combat 7 or War Thunder those are also leaning more towards 'arcade' like Vr fighter games, like this Vtol VR seems to be in.. I think when it comes to fully realistic high fidelity fighter simulation, nothing out there can beat DCS - that truly is the ultimate experience when it comes down to combat flying.. The more recreative high realistic style 'normal' flying sims, like Msfs and X-plane stay in there own category by themselves.. Then there is also the unrealistic fantasy space flying sims like Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, Star Wars Squadrons and things like No man`s sky that are just not depending on real-time aerodynamics but focus more on being dogfighting games.. For what I can see now Vtol VR especially visually is the least polished compared others in it`s category, so my question would be can it outperform other titles in vr? Can I do 60 fps in VR on high settings on average systems?

But what do you actually do though? All those weapons, what do you shoot at? Are there ai planes, helicopters? Can you play with a stick, is it better or worse than the controllers? Do you land the planes at the end of each mission? Is it jarring if you crash, how motion sickness inducing is it? is the helicopter worth the extra half base game price?

You do missions and you can free flight. There are very smart ai. No need for a stick since everything in the cockpit is controlled with your controllers and it works very nice. Some missions have a landing sequence at the end but most user created content doesn’t. When you get shot down you can eject so you dont have to endure spinning down to your death. I’d recommend buying the helicopter if you enjoy the base game and if you like helicopters in general.

Bought the game today and so far it's really cool. I have the hp reverb g2 and it's controllers, but my throttle controller keeps losing tracking when I look right. So every time I lose tracking my throttle ramps up and I end up going full speed. Sucks when trying to land lol. rip me

My main problem with this game isn't even with the game, its with my headset. The Oculus quest 2 is quite possibly the least immersive device on the planet. Im currently saving up for the Pimax 12kx, and when it releases I will buy it. The resolution is OK, but the low FOV and terrible IPD adjustment completely ruin the immersion.

I'm uncertain about a quest 2 stand alone launch but you can play the game on Quest 2 if connected to your PC via USB C. Look into it, if you really want to play. Also, should note it will come down to your PC specs at that point.

DCS planes are expensive, requires tons of expensive equipment to actually enjoy it and its hard to learn. Vtol vr is cheap with the helicopter being the only dlc, its simple to learn but does require a bit of knowledge. All you really need for vtol is a headset and a pair of controllers. It may not have the graphics of dcs but its just as fun for way less than half the price.
