Its funny how the US gets hate from the English and other Europeans for their football/soccer. To be honest I'm very impressed at the fact that there're great fans like these in the MLS considering how much soccer trails behind other major sports in the states. I'm happy to see these improvement so just keep doing what you're doing and gradually the MLS looks destined to achieve greatness as things only seems to get better and better. The USA national team is also known for being entertaining and showing world class at times unlike England who look destined to be forever mediocre. The women are also killin it. You also have many youngsters who are aware of the game and will likely contribute to the future success of the sport. I'm happy for you and I'll start watching the MLS next season and maybe I'll grow to love it as well. They hate cause they're just jealous of how far you've come and the growth is only going to get bigger. Well done to the supporters and I hope to see greater things in the future.

Well, they started it. They thing that's unique about their fans is that they don't turn on them and get behind them even stronger and that's certainly not the case in Europe, really? Seattle may have pretty good fans for American standards, but they're not even close to the love Europeans fans have for their teams.

@Maximilian Maier what you’re saying is slightly true. With big clubs like Real Madrid and such. The fan bases are probably a little bit more passionate. That doesn’t mean that the Seattle fans aren’t passionate though I live here in Seattle. Sports in general or a huge part of our lives here specially football/soccer. The record for the most fans ever at lumen Field which is the stadium that the sounders and Seahawks play in. Guess which team has the record for the highest attendance not the American football team but the sounders. Don’t just criticize US football/soccer. Because of his reputation it is changing a lot.

Sophie Beaumont Traditionally, all English speaking countries outside of England call it soccer because we all typically have a more dominant code of football we already call football. Like Gaelic in Ireland. Or Gridiron in Canada and the US. And Aussie Rules in Australia. And of course, Rugby (far older than soccer or any other formal code of football) in South Africa and New Zealand. That's why despite the sport being invented in the English speaking world, no English speaking country has won a world cup in 50 years. We simply play other codes of football.

@@notactuallytesco right. The league is growing in wealth every year, but the mls is definitely lacking in tactical approach and viewership. This would improve that aspect of it. Liga MX is lightyears more competitive and serves as a very viable domestic league to groom young intl talent. If we can somehow find a way to get the numbers right, get the tv money and allow teams in MLS, not only to have a fatter salary cap, but to compete vs great young talents, we can not only attract better players to the league but also improve our USMNT development of local players. I believe the salary cap should be elevated but also implemented into liga mx sides to not only avoid financial mistakes but also to keep the playing field level. Maybe luxury tax the rich teams that want to spend more. Also Liga MX is getting TV money/Sponsorship money in USD. Its a win win if they can get the numbers right. Maybe increase roster size.

Football is about respect. No need to start hating the other team or the supporters just because. In Europe some of the rival supporters have hated eachother for ages, and the reasons are bigger than football. involving (politics, losing jobs to the rival teams town back in the day etc.) It's always something bigger, than just rivalry. So keep up the good spirit and respect.

Looking at the comments I can see all there is about the good and the bad regarding football (or soccer) in the US. Most of it is true, but the main thing to me here is that it is growing fast and becoming more and more popular. It seems to attract a more diverse crowd, more liberal and in tune with social causes worth paying attention to, leaving behind the well known stereotypes we often associate with Baseball, American Football and Basketball. In my opinion, it's a very welcomed turn and long overdue. Keep it going, fellas. Cheers from sunny Brazil.

Since Freddy Montero was Sounders footballer I started to love this team. I'm an Atlético Bucaramanga fan, from Colombia, here we have the football in the blood and we are used to see amazing 'Barras Bravas' and an ambient full of true passion in every match. However, Seattle Sounders is kinda of different than rest of teams from US, I think the city and the people love the football almost as much as others famous sports 'gringos' (baseball, american football, basketball, even Hokey) meanwhile cities like LA or New York still liking these sports and ignoring the 'soccer', as all of you call it. I just love the passionate of Seattle Sounders fans, their Barra Fuerza Verde, their love for this wonderful sport; Seattle makes me feel that a little bit of our passion are in US. Surely someday I'll be there, in your city at the Sounders' Stadium, drinking beer and singing for the colours of that beautiful team. It's a dream that I have to do! ¡Viva Seattle Sounders! :-) Honestly, by a south american and Atlético Bucaramanga supporter.

The comments about bandwagon fans and remarks about the stadium not being full are funny coming from Europe, where there are a lot of famous clubs who only get their stadium full for derbies, but for a typical league matches the attendance is much lower, just a few thousand in some cases. And to the people quoting attendance numbers, the Sounders had an average attendance of 43734 in 2014. According to Wikipedia, in the 2013-14 season there were just 23 European clubs that had a higher average. The attendance for the Sounders match featured by Copa90 was certainly a disappointment at just 38912. And as for Europeans complaining about Americans copying the culture from Europe, well, where did you copy it from? From another European country, of course. It is not like this culture was born everywhere in Europe simultaneously. And of course you all know full well that in Europe, too, a lot of the same songs are sung by supporters of different teams (usually with their own lyrics, obviously). Of course some groups have original songs as well, and songs that other groups do not do but so do the supporters in Seattle.

It isnt like Seattle has any local music to pull from or anything. I've met people that thought "Take em all" was a Seattle Sounder original fan song. That is why people hate them. The English National Team, who's players play in the supposed best league in the world, finished last in a group with a CONCACAF team (Costa Rica), which finished first. Which BTW also had MLS players. The US National Team, who's best players play in MLS, managed to get out of an harder group which had a team that has the best player in the world, and a team that has beaten them twice before. Again, when will this Eurosnob elitism from English fans in particular, subside when when you realize you're on your way down? England is falling down the cracks. The US U-17 team beat the England U-17 team 3-0. You're going to come down.

Tom Davey Certainly England. They're still relevant thanks to their outsourced league, which is 20% English. And the ones good enough to play for the national team are old. Gerrard will not last forever, and they're still going to rely on the new NYCFC player, Frank Lampard. The US definitely outperformed both Italy and Spain in the last World Cup. I was talking about contemporary results. Also, losing to Ireland in a friendly with test players is not 'shocking'. Especially when Ireland was the home team, and MLS players were out of form, since the MLS regular season ended a month before. Apart from the fact the US team had to travel many time zones to get there.

I was just watching a piece by Keith Olberman on KZbin ("7 recommendations to improve soccer in America"). I find it interesting that Mr. Mengem has taken the time to actually investigate and report the state of soccer in America (Colorado, Seattle, etc), while American sportscasters and reporters have not. I am happy that Mr. Mengem has visited our fair cities, especially my hometown, Seattle, and can see that soccer has arrived and is flourishing quite well. Maybe Keith Olberman and his fellow dinosaurs should get together with Mr. Mengem and see how real reporting is done. Mr. Mengem series makes for great reporting and viewing. As a side note: Since the establishment of the original Seattle Sounders in 1974, it has pretty much remained in the city conscious during the rough and turbulent times of the 80's and 90's. Support for the original Sounders ranged from tepid to fair, but faith in the game remained strong with the NASL Sounders, Seattle SeaDogs (CISL indoor), Tacoma Stars (MISL indoor, with the great Preki and Steve Zungul), the "A" League/APSL /USL/USISL Sounders & FC Seattle Storm (WSA). Eli Mengem got to experience one of the premier pre-game environments found anywhere in the world....the Emerald City Supporter march from Pioneer Square to Century Link Field. Now, if you really want to experience the Emerald City and her legion of soccer fans, along with another passionate site, Portland and the Timber Army supporters, come back over to this side of the pond for a home and home match between the longest rivalry in American professional soccer, Seattle and Portland. There is no love lost between the to cities, and matches the rivalry and intensity of Celtic/Rangers, Man United/Liverpool or Barcelona/Real Madrid. But of course......you have to wear Rave Green!

I don’t hate the MLS itself, I hate how perfectly it represents everything wrong with modern football. In Europe football clubs were about the working class paying a few pennies to represent their city when there was nothing else to do. Nowadays it’s all about millionaires and foreign investors in big cosy comfortable grounds. Almost any fan who was supporting a club before the 90s would rather be standing on an old terrace with rain pouring on than at a new plastic half and half scarf arena.

In the United States MLS/Soccer is still a minority sport compared to NFL/Gridiron, MLB/Baseball, NBA/Basketball, NHL/Ice Hockey in media exposure and cultural references so you have to put that in perspective.

Honestly so cringeworthy. These fans don't understand the concept of away days, spontaneous chanting. They just attempt to copy Europe.
