how do you stop/prevent those speed wobbles? I first thought it was only sport bikes because of the angle of the forks and wheels but cruisers and others seem to do it too. Even my old Honda does it if I'm like 65 and take my hands off the bars. Is it compression of the suspension?
@AngryD3 күн бұрын
You have to keep a light grip. Death grip on the handlebars will cause it. Especially when shifting. Also if the wheel comes up and is sideways in the least bit when it comes back down, it will violently try to fix itself causing the wobble. You're supposed to speed out of it. It shifts the weight to the rear of the bike and helps the front stop wobbling.
@zsdmrtzmrde3 күн бұрын

@@jasonpatterson2143 What's funny there? He is 100% right. At high speeds you should let go, because you could break your wrists pretty quickly if you try to hold it. Let go and balance / countersteer with your bodyweight if you go far left or right. It also helps if you put more weight on your feet. That will reduce the duration needed to balance itself, giving you better odds to not crash

0:54 Panic clutch pulling. Why do so many riders do this as an instinct is beyond me. Learn to downshift fast while braking hard, just don't pull the clutch and hold it.
@emamotorbiker3 күн бұрын
Incompetence or inexperience. Often riding above their skills. Most of them quit riding within a year or so.
@DarthScosha2 күн бұрын
I had to do an emergency stop last week. While filtering I was going a little too fast, and to no fault of the driver of the car, he pulled out when he spotted a space. This happened so fast, all I could do was brake, there was no time to downshift. I can't argue that downshifting adds more engine braking power, but when you are doing a genuine emergency stop, the only thing you have time for is pulling the brakes. Fortunately I did it right, it was controlled and I pulled in the clutch at the last second so that I didn't stall. You'll be surprised at how powerful your brakes are, and how capable they are of making your bike stop without downshifting.
@emamotorbiker2 күн бұрын
@@DarthScosha Yep. And even more smoothly when you are in the right gear. Not too low, not too high.
@Old_Geezer2 күн бұрын
The downshifting isn't something to worry too much about in a genuine emergency braking situation - however, as you say, reflexively pulling in the clutch lever isn't helpful, as the moment you do so you are coasting and losing the benefit of any additional engine braking completely. That engine braking is gear dependent and may not be huge, but it's another factor that will help you come to a stop or scrub off speed as quickly as possible. The clutch can and should be used at the last moment to avoid a stall although to be honest, stalling at the end of an emergency stop is hardly the worst thing that can happen. I'm pretty sure that If you avoid colliding with what prompted the emergency braking, you'll be too relieved to care about a stalled engine. If you are riding with the benefit of ABS you can grab a big handful of front brake without needing too much finesse - IF you are upright and travelling in a straight line. If you don't have ABS, you need to learn how to brake firmly with the front and then progressively squeeze the lever. It's very much a "feel" thing and if you've never had to brake genuinely hard, you'll probably be surprised just how much stopping power you have at your disposal when used correctly. (Most riders fail to utilize even close to the potential of their front brakes in an emergency stop scenario for fear of locking the wheel - which is understandable but often overestimated in the rider's mind) Provided you don't just exert instantaneous maximum, full on gorilla grab pressure on the lever, you're less likely to lock up than most riders realize. Firm initial squeeze of the lever's initial travel, then progressively increase force at the lever - if the wheel does lock, immediately release and reapply the brake - if your bike is equipped with it, that's all your ABS is doing, it's just able to do it far more quickly than your mind and your hand can, often many times per second. I stress again - this is all assuming the bike is upright and travelling in a straight line. So, if you are not, you need to try and stand the bike up first if possible. Introducing any kind of lean angle and all bets are off. By all means use your rear brake too - just be aware that you have far less feel through your foot and the weight of you and your bike transfers to the front suspension as you brake hard on the front, pushing your tyre down onto the road surface and creating more grip - at least up to the point of locking when traction is obviously lost. Consequently the back of the bike is light and the rear tyre will consequently more easily to succumb to skidding/sliding - too much rear brake can quickly result in a skid/lock up and loss of control so a far more judicious and gentle application is required if you intend to call on it. The bulk of your stopping power lies in the front so, if you can keep the bike upright, brake firmly - but not full on immediately, and then progressively squeeze more travel out of that lever as quickly as you can without locking the font wheel - that's what you're aiming for. Clutch in just before you come to a stop. Of course, it sounds a lot easier written down than it is in practice when you're desperately trying to avoid disaster which is why it's important to at least try and learn the techniques and capabilities of your machine, just in case the need ever arises to put it into practice for real.

Maybe should have spent some of that new bigger bike and camera gear money on some rider training - or just concentrate on what he's doing before playing amateur movie director/narrator whilst trying to ride, which he's apparently not very good at yet. 2:47 You've gotta love the rear window lettering: "Need a Pickup?" - now he does, yeah 😔
