Amazing video! Kudos to the team who filmed this! I've watched countless videos and this is the one that comes the closest to showing the raw power of this storm. That took some real brass to sit out there in the middle of it. The worst of the back eye-wall (6:30 to 8:30 in the video) was shot exactly 4.0 miles due south of me. I'm in North Port, just above the Port Charlotte line. It scared the daylights out of me. I was one of the lucky ones with only about 6000 in damages, mostly to my truck which I had parked sideways in front of the garage door. I will say this ... I will NOT ride out another hurricane. If we are targeted in the future, I will do all the hurricane prep, grab the pets, and head inland to get away from it. There were times during the 5:30PM to 7:30PM window where I was certain I was going to lose my home, if not my life. Pretty scary stuff.

Arthur, thank you for your comment. I am glad to hear you went through it with minor damage. Yes, this hurricane was a powerful one. We are trying our best to document the raw power or hurricanes, so people know what to expect when they are in a hurricane warning zone. Thank you for watching.

That was the most insane thing about this hurricane -- the back eye wall is _never_ that strong, let alone more fearsome than the front right eye wall. On top of that it was a huge hurricane that did this to so many areas. Those back wall gusts seemed to never end and it was absolutely brutal to go through. Glad you guys made it to tell us about it!

Those trees have some deep roots! When the winds picked up during the back eyewall, I thought for sure we'd see some trees toppled. Even in the soggy wet ground, the roots stood firm. Here in Port Charlote, in the peak of the storm our shed tore loose from its foundation and lifted up in the air. I thought it was going to hit the neighbor's house so I ran outside to try and drag it down. Right in front of me it tore to shreds and just blew away without hitting the house. Then I had to belly crawl back into our house because so much debris was in the air it was beating the heck out of me if I was standing up. I was cut and bruised from getting hit by stuff.

I didn't get the opportunity to chase Ian. I did Michael in 18 and that was insane. I did manage to drive out to Punta Gorda after though and my goodness, what a mess. Some roads were impassable while others you had to just crawl through and hope you didn't rupture a tire. Trailer parks completely destroyed, flipped over like they were toys. People's belongings scattered everywhere. It is very sad seeing people's livelihoods and homes destroyed. Pray for those who have lost it all. May they make a speedy and full recovery

"I thought it couldn't get any worse." *narrator voice* it can ALWAYS get worse Hurricanes aren't something to mess with. I talked to a Hurricane Hunter pilot recently and asked him what the worst storm he'd ever flown in was. He went into both Ian and Dorian, and he said Dorian was 100x worse than Ian. That's hard to imagine.

Thank you for your comment. Ian was my 10th hurricane and truly proved the saying that "No hurricane is the same". Till then in most hurricanes I had lived through or chased the back Eye-Wall had been weaker that the front Eye-wall, so I was starting to doubt the folk stories that my grandparents, uncles and my dad told me that the "Virazon" the back side was stronger than the front well oh boy Ian really proved them right. From then on I wouldn't sub estimate the back eye-wall of a hurricane. In fact, last weeks Idalia the back side felt as strong as the front side in Perry, Fl,

"I am patiently waiting for a break between wind gusts to safely make a turn"--in a hurricane eye wall. Had a hearty laugh there. Was that intentional comedy?
@HurricaneXplorer
@HurricaneXplorer Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. It is funny but I actually was waiting for a break. Inside the Eyewall, There is always some breaks between the wind gust. The wind is not necessarily constantly blowing at +100mph. In the case of IAN, he wind was always fluctuating between 60, 70, 100 or 145. To answer your question, yes I did waited until I felt the wind slow down a little. BTW, I had anemometer installed on my truck, so I was monitoring the wind speeds. At the time of the turn the wind was 70mph prior to the turn they was gusting to 94mph. A little while after I was measuring 102 mph. The highest wind I didn’t measured because I was sheltering behind the building. My highest wind measurement was 102mph at 8ft elevation from the ground.
@HurricaneXplorer
@HurricaneXplorer Жыл бұрын
it was an unintentional comedy. For me it was one of the most stressful moment or the chase. As you can see in the video minutes later (minute 7.37) we felt the strongest wind from the Eyewall. I am not sure what would have happened if I had stayed on the highway. When I turned I was behind the trees you can see on minute 7.37.

There's always someone who just has to get out into it. We had hurricane parties instead. When the eye was upon us, we'd walk out to the front yard, enjoy the brief calm, then high tail it back to safety. To date, we've seen 6 solid hurricanes, including Ian, Andrew, and Charlie. The stuff of "shock and awe." ...Live smart, and be ever ready.

The back side intensity was the surprise, because usually after landfall the hurricane weakens rapidly and the back side is not as intense and dryer but in Ian wast different.
