I'd really love to see your opinions on some of Sony's phones, I feel they are unfortunately the only ones left who actually innovate and they look really appealing as they have OS and kernel device trees available freely. I have an Xperia 1 mk 2 and the main reason I bought it is the headphone jack. I am really not looking forward to buying my next phone in a year or 2. Sony phones are great but they aren't selling well so let's just hope they keep making them for a bit longer lol.
@nonci6

@@trevor245 Sony phones are not selling well because of the following reasons: - pricing is way too much - Sony has one of the worst track records when it comes to reliability, OS stability and updates Many people, including myself, lost the trust towards Sony after their many failed attempts at making a single phone last long.
@trevor245

@@nonci6 Pricing really isn't that bad tbh. Atleast it wasn't for the mark 3 which is the last release I kept up with. And also os is still up to date on my phone, most android phones don't really get supported with system updates for very long so I don't think sony really under performs in that aspect either.

It's not a flagship, but I just picked up the Samsung XCover 6 Pro, which has a replaceable battery, dual SIM, and a micro SD card slot. It was designed for enterprise, so I assume the components aren't paired to the board, but don't know for certain; would you consider giving it a look? It's a longshot, but I'm hoping that if it picks up enough steam on the consumer market, Samsung and other manufacturers might start to have second thoughts about gluing everything together.

Nice roundup of the major 2022 releases of phones. I'd agree with you in that, if I was a phone technician, I'd happily repair a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel, whilst probably encouraging even the home user to repair their Fairphone 4. The Nothing Phone, however, is totally different, and I'd have to warn the customer of possible damage. As for Apple's offerings, I'd flat out refuse to work on an iPhone 14/14 Pro (or even a 13/13 Pro or 12/12 Pro) and send the customer to Apple.

Plus they have a rollback protection, partially even more restrictive than Apple. While I think repairability is definitely important, I also think that Software Support is heavily overlooked. I mean, how many phones have enough software support to use them more than 3 years. Samsung is definitely on a good way have soppurt for up to 5 years for their new A53 but it is still nowhere near as good as the software support on an PC or laptop. I can still run windows 10, a properly supported os, on a laptop that is 15 years old and have no drawbacks whatsoever. As long as this isn't the case for phone's, we will still be buying new phones every 3 years or so.

the locks make them unrepairable, but can't knock apple's software support on their phones - the iPhone 6S (and SE 2016) got 6 major OS versions, and 6+ years of security patches, and the 5S is at 9 years of security updates and got 5 major OS versions (the latest 12.x version for security patches released only ~2 months ago!)

If Apple really actually cared about the environment as they claim, they won't even think about doing this. Probably going to avoid buying an iPhone till they stop doing this.

Pretty much all companies have removed the headphone jack - which you can blame Apple for with their iPhone 7! IMO, the iPhone 7 should have been blacklisted on all major carriers for being anti-consumer.

Hi Hugh! I am a pretty big fan of your channel and I have a question. Do you think there will be batteries that are held in in a different way in the future? Screws maybe?

Batteries are already held with screws in some devices. They are stuck down to prevent or make repairs hard.

iPhones use glue, that is a step down from repairability. Need specialized tools for that and a supply of the glue required. The practice of using glue just needs to stop, its used only to make end users unable to repair devices themself at open.

Still on my Asus Zenphone 6. Had to replace the USB-C jack which I got on Ebay for cheap. Also replaced my fingerprint reader cause dumbass accidentally snapped the cable whole replacing the USB-C module (Completely my fault) and I also replaced the battery. As per the battery and fingerprint scanner I had to order from Asus directly as it was hard to find those parts on ebay, etc also Asus phones aren't necessarily mainstream enough where thete are a ton of parts available. With that at least you can readily order whatever part you need from the OEM at reasonable prices although the shipping is more pricey but still way cheaper overall than Apple. Point being at least the phone is easily repaired and parts are available as it should be.

I moved from electronic repairs to car repairs. And what can I say. Compared to car manufacturers, tech companies are holy. Imagine macbook, that requires you to remove screen first to gain access to back cover. And than if you put it back together you will need 1000 buks/month software to get it started, and if you use some other software it might start burning.

None of these products can be associated with the word "repairable". For something to be repairable there should be: - a comprehensive knowhow and knowledge base, with support manuals and schematics that will allow board and component level repair. - a wide variety of alternative spare and replacement parts for both subassemblies and PCB components, so that anything can be repaired with the most affordable price. A screen can be offered for hundreds of dollars if bought from original brand or to buy alternatives from one of the many other sellers that can be cheaper or more expensive, that can be better or worse. Look in the world of computers, you can buy a screen for you PC from a host of manufacturers some better than the others, or similar but at a lower price. The same should be doable with phone and tablets and laptops, etc... ... And a company should be branded as an anti-repair company when they employ specific anti-repair processes. The most basic of such things is using proprietary screws. Any product that doesn't use a regular widespread screw type is anti repair. Then we go into lack of spare parts. If there is no spare parts available or just one offer from the manufactuer itself, that is a giant red flag of antirepair and monopoly. Then we have the software lock that doesn't allow the replacement of other parts. And i'm not talking about using affordable parts. Even the same part from another perfectly similar product, if that doesn't work, clearly an anti-repair company that should be shut down by govermental consumer protection agencies. And the lack of schematics on how to do repair of your product. No copyright bullshit here, because anyone can agree, these phones are nothing amazing. Is the same tech as several years back. It's not warp engine from the 24th century future civilization . Especially Apple is an obsolete brand that uses old tech. They should have no right to claim any IPs to defend not sharing tech. In fact a company should be branded repairable when they go the extra mile to ensure there are countless alternatives for each of their parts, and moreover they themselves develop new products using old platform. For example with Samsung. The flagship phone from 2022 should be found as an entry level phone from 2026 or something. Literally, you can buy the S22 now as new with all the bells and whistles of being a brand new whatever top of the line, and still buy it in 6 years, still new, but because the tech evolved so much it is an entry level. And this last statement proves the previous point, where the tech is not much different from one year to another and they don't ake amazing new tech that can be sincerely protected with copyrights and IPs, because it's not. The s22 is not much different from it's predecessor or next year replacement. Phones should not be replaced each year. The s22 is launched now and the successor in like 5 years when there is sufficient development to justify a new model, just like game consoles. You don't see them launch a new Playstation each year with minimal to no benefits.
