When talking underlayment are you meaning some type of landscape fabric or some other type of fabric? TIA

Landscape fabric would be best, it allows moisture to go back into the ground if your crawlspace takes on a little water.

@@CrawlSpaceNinja I am looking at your dimple underlayment in your DIY store, but there is one thing I do not understand. Would having two warterproof layers not trap moisture between them and cause problems?

What kind of underlayment would you use?

You can use pond liner felt - it's used under pond liners to protect them against punctures. Think landscaping fabric on steroids. Alternatively but more expensive, is a dimple matting, typically used for exterior (below grade) walls to allow water drainage down to a drain tile.

@@CrawlSpaceNinjaI’ve seen people say landscaping and then pond felt also. What’s the difference? We have a gravel base so thinking about which underlayment would be sturdiest.

My crawl space here is Michigan is brick walls with a concrete floor there’s no vapor barrier there’s no utilities that need service down there. Is there any reason to install a vapor barrier? Thanks Tom

In my experience, if the humidity down there is greater than 55% your floor joists will slowly rot over time. Maybe a dehumidifier alone?

Without looking at the space, your best bet would be a dehumidifier. But thats without actually looking at it.

Like the others have said, if your humidity is high you will want a dehumidifier at least. A vapor barrier will help keep the soil from evaporating more moisture into the air causing the dehumidifier to run more often, but a vapor barrier alone will not remove humidity if it's already there.
