I think the Soilwork is a grower and I now absolutely love the album. It took about 7 listens, but now I get it. The Machine Head I like quite a bit too for what it is. Everything else on your list I'm impartial to. I do like Nick Holmes on Bloodbath, bit the music doesn't grip me throughout. However, I was hoping for Behemoth to blow me away, but I can't seem to stay engaged with the album. I might buy the two contrasting mediabook versions and emerse myself for a full experience over the darkest days that are upon us. Perhaps that'll help. Certain environments for listening can be the key to connect.

Gasp opinions, run away!!! Great video, find myself agreeing with your takes on the Shadow of Intent and Ibaraki. You’re more generous than I am on Machine Head’s latest…last album of theirs I really enjoyed was Unto the Locust.

Kreator's new one was easily my most disappointed. Worst since the 90's flops. Septicflesh and Amorphis also but they were still good just a step down from the last like 5 albums.
@Biomechanicalzombi2 жыл бұрын
I watched your review of Pain Remains and thought it was fair and was not surprised by it appearing here. I enjoyed it but my biggest complaint about it was that I had heard probably 90% of it before it released , just about every song was a single. It was, like many Deathcore albums, a smidge too long. Shadow of Intent I agree with you also, it just didn’t hit as the singles promised and was also too long. Bloodbath was fun and solid Death Metal, I enjoyed it and still do, I wasn’t disappointed just received the fun jam I expected if that makes sense lol. As for Machine Head, it was a step up from the last one, but just okay. The others I either just listened to once, like Deathspell Omega, or didn’t at all so can’t really comment. Hopefully the zealots of certain fan bases will not inundate you with the usual nonsense. I thought you were fair and honest and that’s all I and anyone can ask of you. Enjoy what you enjoy and let other people enjoy the other stuff. We all hear things differently, enjoy different things, that’s what makes music so great, something for everyone.

I absolutely adore pain remains and it is a masterpiece in my opinion. However, I respect your takes and your criticisms are pretty insightful. My most disappointing albums this year are Behemoth’s new record, Slipknot’s The End so Far, Impera by Ghost, and that god awful Parkway Drive album. I’ve always liked PWD’s early work but I checked out Darker Still and it has to be some of the worst Metalcore I’ve heard in a long time. The new architects album is also not the greatest and it’s quite bland but it looks really damn good when compared to Darker Still.
@morningstoke2 жыл бұрын
Darker Still is the biggest letdown I've ever had. Was hoping it would at least have one song I liked but it's terrible... Finding out about the internal conflicts added a lot of context I think. Architects fell off after Holy Hell. Both Parkway and Architects were my favorite core bands too.

Ghost's "Impera" is one of my favourite albums of the year, but I couldn't agree with your opinion about Parkway Drive's New album MORE. "Killing With A Smile", "Horizons" and "Deep Blue" are FANTASTIC, but Parkway drove me away since. They have fallen mightily from the greatness they once had IMHO.
@BFFredo2 жыл бұрын
I think with the Ibaraki album, the "problem" is that it's a side project worked over many years. So there's no cohesiveness per se to it. For me, the latter half of the album (worked most recently) is when it got really good and interesting. But that wasn't enough to make the whole thing worthwhile. Ibaraki might be something Matt and Ihsahn release singles or EPs for as they go rather than a decade for 1 album. IMO. As for Overrated/Disappointed, the two at the top of my head are Amon Amarth's The Great Heathen Army and Architects' The Classic Symptoms of a Broken Spirit. For the Vikings, it feels like they've either lost a gear or rushed the album out but there's little cohesiveness and almost none of the bite of their best work. Meanwhile, Architects have (in the words of Crash Thompson) been swallowed up by the Imagine Dragon.

On paper, that Bloodbath album should've been one of my albums of the year. I just found it boring and tedious.

I agree with every take here. Though I loved the Bloodbath. I'm a junkie for Swedeath riffs and Nick Holmes' Mummy/zombie vocals. So many songs on that new one that get me going.

Your summary of the first one is basically how I felt about the Wednesday 13 album that came out this year... His previous 3 full length albums were easily his best albums n then Horrifier was so mid that I forgot the album name n had to go look it up in the middle of typing this... Only even like 1 song... None of the songs are bad but none of them standout at all besides the memorial to Joey Jordison at the end
@mindful28642 жыл бұрын
You’re the king of hot takes, but that’s okay. You’re honest with your opinions and I’m okay with that. I disagree with the Shadow of Intent, Bloodbath, Ibaraki, Soilwork, and Lorna Shore choices. However, I absolutely agree with the Deathspell Omega, Mors Principium Est, Machine Head, Nekrogoblikon, and Abbath choices. The new DSO was alright but compared to Furnaces, Fas, and Paracletus; it pales in comparison. The new Abbath was downright disappointing. However, I thought the new Bloodbath was their best since The Fathomless Mastery and the new Shadow of Intent was one of the best deathcore albums of the year.

There are better Bloodbath releases for sure, I mean 3 songs of the EP 'Breeding death' by them are a lot better than their new album. But I still enjoyed 'Survival of the sickest', I get that some songs are a bit boring but there are some pretty solid ones too. The opening track 'Zombie Inferno' is pretty cool in my opinion. As you said, a solid B rated album, but I wouldnt call it dissapointing or overrated lol. Keep on the good work🤘

Mine is probably Impera by Ghost I've seen a good bit of people say a lot of good things about this album but really I thought it was a bit boring and underwhelming. Good list. I loved Shadow of Intent's first 2 albums Primordial and Reclaimer everything since then I haven't been able to get into. Machine head was ok but I grew out of them. His vocals are not the best. The burning red is secretly my favorite album by them followed by Through the Ashes of Empires.

@guillermomartinez69212 жыл бұрын
Well, I'll give my opinion on what I hear from the list 1) Deathspell Omega has become more melodic and more accessible over time, so I don't really see it as a bad thing, it was going to happen sooner or later, however, the songs feel longer than they should and that's my complaint about the album 2) I found Rashomon to be an excellent album that mixes everything Heafy likes in a very unique way and I never felt any element out of place, that's the biggest strength of the album 3) Pain Remains really is a good album, but To the Hellfire doomed them forever and the music doesn't have the dynamics that an album that lasts so long needs, many breakdowns without some kind of build up, however, the songs are good and the lack of dynamics in the music is made up by Will's incredible vocal performance, definitely the highlight of the album, where everything good about the album shines the most is in the final trilogy. Maybe the vocal performance of the year 4) Shadow of intent with Elegy really surprised me a lot, I would say that it is the best album I have heard this year, it starts in an epic way and ends in an even more epic way, although it does not have as much vocal madness as Melancholy, all this is compensated with a better form of enunciation and different tempo changes when singing, I thought it was great how the band knew when to let the orchestration shine and when to prioritize the riffs, it gave everything a greater impact. Another point that I found great is that unlike Pain Remains, the songs are different from each other and there is more dynamic in them, added to the fact that they handle their concept in a much more focused and concise way, the lyrics are great and represent the curse of humanity to be condemned to fight, repeating the process over and over again throughout our history in a very mature and raw way. The only thing that annoyed me is that the guests didn't really contribute anything, I didn't even notice their presence, especially Phil

I’d argue overrated just means it’s being praised on a scale that seems out of touch with reality. Just a few things here. I thought the Ibaraki albums two best parts were when Nergal was singing and when Gerard from MCR was doing black metal vocals. The rest of it sounded like a normal Trivium album and I wanted something a little different. You know what disappointed me a little bit. The new Behemoth album. Seemed a little bit of a clusterfuck. Now the Soilwork album I like but I would not consider it death metal AT ALL. Maybe it is just me but the singer sounds like Don Dokken at times. I thought Bloodbath was a ton of fun...and a font doesn't effect the music. I wanted to like the new Machine Head and Unhallowed is one of their best songs...but the album as a whole fell flat for me. Personally I think my only disagreement mostly stems from expectation. Loved new Soilwork-expected to be meh on it. Loved Ibaraki initially (until I knew it was ISAHN, felt it underachieved after I knew)but also came in with a meh attitude. Bloodbath, same. (Although it was retreading stuff done better by newer bands) I think my old ass was mostly disappointed in my legacy acts-Kreator and Megadeth highest among them. I was disappointed with DsO's new record, too, especially after coming back to it after hearing the sheer brilliance of The Furnaces of Palingenesia. personally i kind of disagree with the lorna shore. i believe most of the album sounds the same, but the trilogy really hit a special place for me it’s probably my favorite in all of deathcore. i love how melodic it is and all that. but other than that the album is not the greatest.

And I think if this was the opinion I was hearing I'd be much more agreeable. But when you have an army of angry simps in your review's comments saying it's the greatest album of the year and God's gift to the world... it's hard to not take issue with that when there is SO much good music coming out that flies under the radar.

Ok so: on Shadow of Intent...I agree tbh. I like the album but I can't really argue with issues you mentioned Bloodbath album was solid but not amazing putting my dislike of Mikko Aspa as a person aside, I still can admit how great plenty of DSO albums are. This wasn't one of them, actually might be their worst YES, I'm definitely with you on Ibaraki And on Machine Head Haven't heard Mors' album Abbath's album was meh Soilwork album kinda disappointed me Haven't heard Necrogoblikon Can't agree with you on Lorna Shore, I enjoyed the album but to each their own Slipknot def would be on list like this if I made one, but eh, it's Slipknot, they never not overrated

Am I the only one finding it impossible to be impressed or even satisfied with "heavy" music anymore? I consume A LOT of music during my 12 hour shifts at work and burn myself out on things I love fairly quickly, but I've gotten to a point where heavy music seems so bland and boring to me, even coming from bands I love. I get more excitement out of the new Architects and Parkway Drive albums than I do the new Spite album, yes, I love all 3. Am I broken or is heavy music passed its peak?

Man, elegy is one of the strongest album of the year. Ibaraki's Rashomon is an awesome record with awesome instrumentation, maybe not a 10/10 but a solid 8/10

Remember Welcome To Horrorwood II? Well that's kind of what i fell with Pain Remains. It's neither bad nor disappointing, in fact i think it's a decent slab of Blackened Deathcore, but it's definitely overhyped to the point that i'm tired to hear about it. But if you have it as your AOTY, more power to you, that's the beauty about having different opinions. That being said, at least Lorna Shore doesn't make grow a new muscle from overcringing like Ice Nine Kills does. Have a good day!

Bloodbath, DsO, Ibaraki, even Abbath blows Blut Aus Nord out of the water. Even if these albums also weren't *the* best. And I did like new Blut Aus Nord too, but it has always been one of the most overrated black metal bands maybe in history, at least the underground one. Disharmonium is just "Deus Salutis Meæ" but a bit less noisy and people really did not like that record for some reason. But of course it's all opinions, music wouldn't make sense if everyone had the same taste and opinion on everything ✌️

I love shadow of intent but i found the elegy very boring except for 3 songs, its sound seems very flat i find the songs very boring, in my opinion reclaimer is a very superior álbum, so sad if this is the new direction .Reclaimer=Melancholy >Primordial>Elegy. By the way, as a curious fact, the intro of the farewell (the first song) is very similar to the intro of before lights out by hiroyuki sawano for shingeki no kyojin the anime.

Just my opinion, "Survival Of The Sickest" is close to my No. 1 album for 2022. That along with Psycroptic's "Divine Council" Plus -(16)- "Into Dust". Yeah, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but SOTS is just an incredibly enjoyable DM album. Well written & makes me want to go out and kill zombies. Plus "Carved" is the greatest song ever written to accompany your Sunday Roast. "Of Kingdom & Crown"? It's just "The Blackening" Pt. 2. I found it a yawn fest from the start. Way too overhyped for what it actually is. A 10 minute opener? I think a shorter more immediate opening track might of been a better option. The artwork is better than the album. I respect Robb & what he's done in his career with MH, but it might be time to call it a day. Really what else does he hve left to prove?

Elegy is my number 1 most played album of the year according to Apple Music, so I have to disagree with you a bit there. I do think it isn’t as special as Melancholy though, that album is pretty hard to top. I was also pretty underwhelmed when Pain Remains first came out but I’ve come to like it a lot more now. I definitely don’t think it’s the AOTY or even deathcore AOTY though. Oh, and the Ibaraki album is probably my favourite release this year but that’s cause I’m a die hard Trivium fan lol.
