There isn't a lot of foreigners in Iloilo, for decades it's been ignored by expats so there isn't a culture around foreigners at all. I was shocked when I visited Bacolod, Cebu and Manila and saw a lot of foreigners everywhere. This is actually great for Iloilo, it's safe, no foreigner tax, there is rarely any sex tourism that prey on underage girls and the government will focus more on improving the city and in making it more livable for the people.

Love to walk around the Esplanade every weekend. There are banks everywhere, The presence of more than 7 huge universities and many colleges attest to how the place value education. Take time to visit the City and you will be amazed at the dynamism and vibrancy of the place. My heart beats in Iloilo City-the City of Love/Smile as they say.

You're right, it's a different place in comparison to other Philippine cities and that is even mentioned by a Spanish chronicler, Antonio Pigafetta during their first voyage, 500 years ago. He noticed it didnt have chieftains but just Datus and it is more egalitarian rather than hierarchical in comparison to Cebu and other islands. GDP, total bank deposts and college graduates PER CAPITA is the highest in the country. Big reason for that is the geography, it's mostly flat lands therefore there are inter mingling between far flung populace over thousand of years. Mountainous islands like Cebu you have "Balkanization" with every other side of the hill a little fiefdom of its own, hence, very little interaction with other parts of the island thereby creating enclaves and think they are the center of the universe. 85% of Bacolod or western part of Negros island can trace it's lineage back to Iloilo 50 to 150 years ago because of migration during sugar boom. Yes, exported sugar as far as Canada before it was a unified country. Davao is partly populated and created by Ilonggos too (migration during 50's), their 3rd language. Other major cities in Mindanao the first and 2nd language is Ilonggo too (Hiligaynon) such as Marbel and Gen San amongst others. Zamboanga city was mostly created by Ilonggos along with a contingent of Spaniard soldiers (Hint: Chavacano language) to reduce raiding pirates going further north. My wife is an Ilongga nurse so I should these stuff by heart. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4G3nGiuhb9kjdk

The poor and the very rich ilonggos have all left leaving only the ofw families behind after the collapse of the sugar industry. Reverse migration is still to be seen. Iloilo needs to create opportunities for the ilonggo diaspora to come home.

The population of Iloilo City, Philippines in 2024 is projected to be 499,754. This is an increase from the population in 2023, which was 491,641. Explanation Iloilo City is a first-class highly urbanized city in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. In 2023, Iloilo City had the fastest growing economy in Western Visayas. It was also the second fastest growing economy among all highly urbanized cities in the Philippines.

Iloilo is still nicknamed the City of Love- for a lot of reasons, especially the general 'soft-spokenness' and the amorousness of the people- but also because the spot where the big fountain is in the middle of the city is the dead center of the Philippine archipelago, a.k.a., the heart of the country. :) The City of Iloilo has been named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in the latest UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) for 2023. The list was revealed on World Cities Day, adding 55 cities covering the seven creative fields of crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, and music.

Like any other emerging cities, infrastructures tend to be great and up to date. I think the biggest challenge from new emerging cities is how it will keep up years later when there’s more foreign influx. If there’s more foreign investments, there’s an additional population increase as well to keep up on the demand. That’s where you’ll get problems with traffic and how to deal with the congestion. Cebu had a phase where it was peaceful. I recall way back in 2009 which was completely different and then I see some gradual changes starting around 2013 of how the city and its people have to deal with cultural differences and norms in friction with foreigners. Not just foreigners but people from other local region. An ordinary landlocked city folk from davao or from bukidnon will have some adjustments living in cebu because the roads aren’t that wide enough, its highly dense for a such a small land area and the food will be different for them. They will miss those little things such as cheap and affordable beef or fresh milk from bukidnon. Of course these are minor nuances but it affects a-lot of how they will deal with such things in the city where they are not used to. There’s plenty of nuances to it. Basically what i’m saying is a city with great infrastructure is one thing, but the next hurdle is how the city has to deal with multiculturalism one day years later down the road. Which is what i find it super important when living in a place. I would love to hear your foreign insights as well when you visit Clark and Baguio! These are new emerging cities as well on the northern side of the country.

The south reclamation area in Cebu City is now undergoing development for shopping, entertainment, casino, & more. But, outside that area are the usual poverty, narrow sidewalks, & slums. I just want to point out that as our barangay is very near this area. The LGU would also invest in improving our living conditions like good sidewalks, walkways around residential areas, small parks. With billions of pesos earn from sale of reclaim lot. Our barangay near SRP looks just the same. It is crowded & disorderly. The government is helpless & just rely in the private sector for nice developments. I think this is a mega trend nationwide.

Iloilo is a conservative province compared to Cebu. The same reason why development came later. Iloilo is what you call in the states where old money comes from. Except all businesses are in Manila. Taxes paid in Manila. Iloilo is being used to visit their ancestry and chill. Stay away from the hustles and bustles of Manila. Besides Manila, Cebu is the center of trade in the Visayas. Cebu always wants attention and advertisements, it's part to attract businesses. In reality, they are not the first. Queen City of the south named by Queen Isabela of Spain to Iloilo not Cebu. Cebu took away the opening salvo of Festivals in the Philippines by making their schedule on the same month with Iloilo. The same reason majority of Filipinos snubs Cebuanos attitude. A lot of my American friends here in the US knows more about Cebu. Iloilo people don't care at all about foreigners. We understand their is a price to pay for progress. Iloilo does not want to be a prostitution hub like Cebu. Cheap labor. Another term "Duha Cinco" or two prost. for 5 cents. I miss Iloilo, Cebu and Davao its been 25 years.

I always appreciate getting perspectives like this. Though do you think these days it's still the majority of Filipinos who snub cebuanos? thank you for visiting the City of Love. Hope you enjoyed your short stay here. There are more than the places you visited in this video nonetheless thank you again for taking time enjoying and having a good time while you're in here. Definitely ILOILO is one of the best place to stay in the Philippines. Less traffic, less pollution, green, bike friendly, one of the cleanest Urban river in the country, more safer and the recent Gastronomy Capital (hope I spelled it right 😂). Anyways, thank you again and again. ❤❤❤

Yes, there's a whole world outside the big cities in the Philippines. Believe it or not, smaller cities can be much better than congested areas like Cebu. That's exactly what I meant when you talked about Cebu and its best neighborhoods to live in: I wasn't convinced at all.

Davao City is about 33x bigger than Iloilo City.. And you thought Iloilo City is NOT crowded.. but would you believed its probably has the highest population density among cities outside Metro Manila.. it has 5800 people / km². And im not including the people coming in to the city from nearby towns everyday that doubles its population during daytime.
@darkboard55562 ай бұрын
Davao's urban area is only about 20% of its total land area. That's where most people are. The rest is agricultural and forest land. Davao enos are now starting to complain about crowding in central areas. Davao is also the geographic center of southern, central and eastern mindanao that's several regions with many provinces and millions of people. Imagine the people and goods passing through davao city on a daily basis. No wonder why he thinks iloilo is not crowded.

@@darkboard555620% of Davao City is still 6x bigger than Iloilo City.. And almost half of Iloilo City land area are still agricultural lands, marches, wetlands and mangrove forest. @@darkboard5556 Lacking the crowd even with a daytime population of 1 million plus? Its because most people in ILOILO have jobs, professions, businesses, entrepreneurships, Which is why this 2 million plus population during the daytime are kept busy with their jobs inside their offices and shops, etc. This is unlike in other cities where much of the population are jobless. These jobless ones populate the streets, alleys, etc. These jobless ones roam about, loitering the city,and making you feel there are plenty of people with no jobs. They sleep in the sidewalks. PS. Correction - there is a computer glitch here that I did not see. It's not 2m but 1m. Thank you.
