Alice, you're giving big "mysterious poet in a smoky French cafe" vibes today. I read a post on r/skincareaddiction (I think) about how a lot of east Asians tend to have dehydrated but oily skin. Obviously I have no idea how true that is, but it would make sense why foam cleansers and toners are so popular! Currently I'm trying out the dewytree amino cleansing milk, and I like it! Definitely light cleansing power, but I don't feel as dry throughout the day. Hope you're feeling better from last week!

Oh interesting! That could indeed explain it. It very much feels like my skin type isn’t very common within Korea itself (which is fine; I do have a lot of favorite drugstore/affordable cream cleansers - can’t complain haha!) I am, thank you so much 🥰

I only cleanse at night so my cleansers seem to last a looong time and, tbh, I usually use whatever my daughter didn't like lol! I'm loving this series and I think it would be great if you did videos on serums, essences (I know those 2 often overlap), moisturizers, etc. K-beauty is endlessly fun to me! Have a great week🥰

YES, they do last forever!! I am so down, although I’m struggling to figure out how on earth I’ll do serums (probably by skin concern, I think? Acne serum, hydration, etc?) Regardless, yup K-Beauty is fun, so these are indeed fun to do 😁 Hope you have a great week too!

I just opened my second bottle of the yam root cleanser. Back when I was on adapalene it was the ONLY cleanser I could use comfortably (even make prem milk, sioris cream, and cetaphil gentle were painfully drying). Even now that I've switched to a gentler retinoid (BoJ eye serum) it remains my favorite cleanser. No matter what condition my skin is in I know I can rely on it. I get what you mean about no cleanser being truly "hydrating", but I feel like the yam cleanser is THE exception. You mentioned using it on damp skin, and it's not "hydrating" if you use it that way. If I use it on dry skin then slowly add water to emulsify (which is what I typically do) then it feels genuinely hydrating, even after it's rinsed off. I have never found another cleanser that can do that, to the point that, until I discovered this cleanser, I also thought it was impossible.

Random comment on the Manyo Cleansing Oil. I just found one with limited edition packaging at TJ Maxx. I'm nonbinary...but unfortunately AMAB...so I have to shave my face. I have discovered that this Cleansing Oil also doubles as a shaving oil for me...because it is more thick, it really provides a barrier between my skin and the razor, with zero irritation...and I get a clean shave 🫠

I totally agree with you about the Cos RX good morning cleanser. I was so surprised at how stripping it was on my skin, which is combo but more dry and somewhat sensitive. And for someone who seeks out unscented products, this one smells quite medicinal. A much better option is Dr. Jart+ micro foam (really much more of a gel,) cleanser. I love this product, so mild but thoroughly cleansing.

This was so fun! I really like to play around and try a lot of different cleansing oils and balms (totally agree on their strengths in handling sunscreen and makeup!) but for my second step I’m much pickier having dry skin. My favorite rn it the round lab mugwort cream cleanser bc it’s reasonably affordable ($17/5oz) and accessible. I’m always tempted to save a buck on cleanser but it really does matter when you have dry sensitive skin!!

I also have dry, acne prone skin, and I couldn’t find a K-beauty cleanser that I really loved. Lately I’ve been alternating between PanOxyl Acne Creamy Wash Benzoyl Peroxide 4% and Hero Cosmetics Gentle Milky Cleanser. It’s been working out well for me. love the PanOxyl cuz it’s a creamy benzoyl peroxide wash, and the Hero Cosmetics has PHA so it’s lightly exfoliating.

Just wondering ... which do you use as the 1st and 2nd cleanse? I have been eyeing that PanOxyl and now Hero.
@CloverBell13
@CloverBell13 Жыл бұрын
@@mandywong1408 My cleansing routine usually goes like this: I like to start with a cleansing oil to remove makeup and sunscreen, but also because I have dry skin I find using an oil is a gentle way to soften and buff away dead flakey skin. I like the Speedy Cleansing Oil by Kose (the one in the pink bottle) cuz it’s affordable and works well. About twice a week I’ll also use the Blemish Balm by Peace Out on my acne prone areas (my chin and nose). I know that scrubs have kinda been demonized, but I like this one because it uses hydrogenated jojoba oil as its physical exfoliant rather then something rougher like ground up walnut shells or apricot pits. This balm also has salicylic acid as a chemical exfoliant, but because the percentage is not listed it must be less that 0.5% so it’s not strong. (although, I feel it is important to note that I do not have sensitive skin) How you choose to use the two cleansers I mentioned can really depend on your skin and what your end goal is. You could alternate between the two everyday, only using one at a time as a more gentle approach. OR you could use both during the same routine. Starting with the Hero cleanser will gently exfoliate your skin, prepping it for the PanOxyl wash to be able to penetrate deeper (though in my experience this is a little more drying). Or you could start with the PanOxyl and then cleanse with Hero second to soothe and bring back moisture to your skin. (when I choose to use both cleansers together, I usually prefer to start with PanOxyl and finish with Hero). Although, I don’t know if the order you choose to use these cleansers makes a monumental difference so don’t stress over it. However, if you choose to use a scrub/exfoliant first like I do, then you don’t need to worry about exfoliating again by starting with the Hero cleanser. Also, if your cleansing routine is sometimes leaving you dry (and you don’t want to switch cleansers) you could always follow it up by immediately applying a simple serum, toner, or essence containing your favorite humectants (hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, glycerin, etc) I like the Gokujyun Premium Lotion by Hada Labo (this is a Japanese product and I think the translation is just a little different cuz this is NOT what english speakers would call a lotion, it’s more like a thick essence or serum) Now I fully understand that my cleansing routine is a bit excessive; you do NOT need 5 products to cleanse your face (unless you want to). Really all you need is a cleaning balm/oil to remove makeup and at least one cleanser. If you don’t wear make-up, I personally don’t believe you even need to bother with a balm/oil first. Sorry for the LONG explanation, but hopefully my suggestions may have been a little helpful. This is what works for my skin, but everyone’s skin is different, so feel free to experiment and find out what works best for you.

I think the confusion with milk cleansers comes from the difference between the category in the west vs in Asia. Not 100% sure about K-beauty, but for J-Beauty the term “Cleansing milk” is a category of cleansers that are used as a first step cleanse to remove make-up and sunscreen and is a more optimal choice for dry skin types as it’s generally less stripping and more gentle than cleansing oils. I would assume K-beauty is similar because I’ve seen milk cleansers from brands like Make P:rem, Laneige, TheFaceShop, etc. that were meant to be used as first step cleanses. However, I think as brands are expanding into a more global market, the terms that they use can change to reflect the global audience so there’s always going to be that confusion. (See Japanese skincare that uses “lotion” to describe “toner”, some newer brands are starting to change that)
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
!! Yes that absolutely makes sense. I remember being very confused by what I would call “toner” being labeled as a “lotion” lol. Makes sense that this phrasing would extend into cleansing also. Thanks so much for sharing!!

According to Kbeauty, I believe the milk cleansers are geared towards the light to no make-up peeps who have oily or combo skin. Their dermatologists believe that oily skin individuals will clog their pores even more with an oil cleanser. I have oily dry combo with hormonal acne, but I break out every time I reach for that oil cleanser outside the time of the month. My last and only oil cleanser will be out of my routine soon.

I happen to love the Dokdo cleanser! Its one of the few foam cleansers i can use on my dry skin, alongside the etude house soon jung 5.5 cleansing foam, p.calm underpore cleansing foam (LOVING this one right now in summer) and rovectins pore foaming cleanser of which they changed the name of recently to something im not sure of LOL. I find im gravitating towards them a lot right now and youre right-theyre super fun to use! another gel cleanser i keep coming back to is that haruharu cleansing gel- its so gentle on my skin and the bouncy texture is again skintertainment! What i do know about cream/milk cleansers in korea is that people often use them as first cleanser- I dont find them super effective but i suppose some do lol. I like the isntree cleanser but don't use it often as I prefer gels- its great with irritation though! love the manyo product too! beplain comes up a lot on hwahae, and everything ive tried from them ive loved, especially that #1 mung bean cleansing oil and their toner>>> i definitely also understand the "hydrating experience" explanation-i look for a specific sensation in my skin to know if a cleanser is too stripping and i feel that is correlated to that idea. sorry for the long comment i get enthusiastic LOL!
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
Yes, you get it! It’s a sensation while using it that speaks volumes. Oddly enough, I find cleanser (and moisturizer) to be the two categories where I can decide most quickly how I feel about them. I do have to pay close attention to that cleanse, whereas I can note the moisturizer sensation through the day. With serums/toners, I take weeks to make up my mind haha!

I think the milk cleansers are not popular in Asia as Asian skin is typically large pores and oily then prone to sensitivity . So oil and balm cleansers are more popular ? That’s my theory at least ( I live in tokyo ) I have super super dry skin so totally understand your need for layers and oil on top of everything at night I literally wake up and touch my face in the middle of the night abs make sure it’s still “ moist” sometimes I’ll slap on another layer

I didn't think you were harsh on the Cos RX. I too hate the smell of tea tree (almost as much as I hate the smell of witch hazel!). This was well timed! I think I'm about to buy the Banila cleansing balm in the ceramide version, have you tried that one? Yes I'm lucky enough to be ok with fragrance in skincare, and I know what you mean about unscented products. I recently had to stop using Holifrog's grand amino cream as it smelt just *awful*. The brand were not at all receptive to my polite feedback either!

I don't really enjoy the experience of cleansing my face, for me with dry skin I like cleansers that don't leave my face dry so I can use other active ingredients that are more aggressive with my skin such as retinol, vitamin C, etc. I also enjoy oil cleansers because they make the cleansing process faster, however I find all oil cleansers to be harsher on my skin. And regarding the foaming clensers, I buy one from La Roche Posay that I really like, it's the lipikar syndet, I think you'd like it a lot, because it's like a cream in contact with the skin, but I don't do double cleansing, I just use the cleansing oil or the lipikar syndet from La Roche Posay, depending on how my skin feels, I use one or the other. Could you make this kind of videos with essences, serums and creams? Alice, what is the name of that app that you say is called huahae or something like that? I hope you have a great day and I send you lots of hugs from Chile 🥰

Tbh it’s the same for me (it’s always sad for me to remove my makeup, which I think is why I do like the ritual of cleansing balms . I dislike removing the makeup, but it must be done. Might as well make a ritual out of it lol!) Thank you for the rec!

@lavayuki

I used most of these and the Yam root one was the only cleanser that suited my dry sensitive skin. The Cosrx low ph was a disaster for mr, stank of tea tree and dried the daylight out of my skin so I used it as body wash. Loved Banila but prefer BoJ and Heimish balms. The Manyo oil which is popular in Japan, made me break out so I threw it away.

That Yam Root Milk Cleanser is my first cleanse jam. I wet ONE hand, add cleanser, rub with dry hand, and apply to dry face. It's a wet/dry compromise that adds just enough water for the process. And I know I've said this before, but Jordan Samuel Matinee Cream Cleanser: to my knowledge, the world's only exception to the "cleansers can't really leave you hydrated" clause. My face feels like the plumpest fruit afterward. Also, completely agree about the surprise harshness of that COSRX cleanser. The more I try that brand, the less I like it. It's now a total pass.

I have sat around pondering the differences between western and eastern cleansers for YEARS lol. It’s a very distinct difference! I think climate may be a factor? Personal preference as well? Someone else commented that Korean people may tend to have dehydrated/oily skin which I feel also might explain it. Difficult to know, but I will say that Isntree cleanser was pretty game changing in opening up options in K-Beauty for my tricky skin type! (Now I wonder if my fellow Greek/French heritage folks have dry skin. So much to ponder 🤣)

@@AliceintheRabbitHole I am 1/2 polish and my family has what we call dry/oily skin. I think it’s actually dehydrated, but I do people from colder climates tend to have drier skin. But you live in the south and have dry skin. So maybe it is genetics? Skin is so interesting.

Doesn't Banilla and co have one with smells and a frangerance free options in different color containers.I would stay far from rose, I hate it. I haven't tried it yet, I stick to farmacy cleansing balm I love that one I can even use it alone no film anything and that is important to me and it melts on contact and I love the smells they have, hate that they make them limited edition. For milk cleanser I have been using a the black tea milk cleanser from Ferver a brand at Target and I have really enjoyed it . Right now I'm using the Vegreen rice gel cleanser it doesn't dry your skin out at all and it smells slightly of candy like sugar maybe I didn't notice added frangerance in it on the ingredients list. That is the only Korean cleanser I'm using at the moment. I haven't really got along with alot of Korean cleansers but I will try more. O it doesn't hardly foam at all.

I’m sorry but that things you are saying about COSRX are so exaggerated. I think the strong odor and the stripping feeling is so farfetched. I also have dry to combi skin type and super sensitive but so far, it is the mildest and the most effective for me. I am also Southeast Asian which makes me say that this cleanser has made my skin sm better. Also, SLS, which is usually the type of surfactant evident on foaming cleansers is not advisable for dry sensitive skin cause foaming cleansers are made to eliminate excess oil and sebum which is quite absent in a dry skin type. I got all these information from 3 dermatologists to be exact and they all recommended cosrx.
