The comparison is right, Android has any GNU on it, it runs over Linux but Linux is not the complete OS, and the Android architecture puts a lot of layers over it. In case of Chrome OS it was intially Gentoo based but It has been that modified that there's no more GNU running on it (even if some other tools of gentoo like portage stills there), but it doesn't make sense to split chrome os in two categories. There seems to be confusion in the comments over what is considered "Linux" here. Most of these statistics for OS tracking only look at the client OSs that people are most likely to run to access online services and they only count GNU/Linux systems (the regular distros: Debian/Arch/Fedora/etc. and their derivatives) as "Linux". It's a poor representation for sure and since it's the clients we're looking at, servers, appliances, network gear, etc., don't count. Just desktop/mobile usage (GNU/Linux distros have made there way onto smart phones, but its rare),. Also, the average person doesn't understand these things along with the difference between a kernel and an OS. For most people, all that matters is the computer in front of them as a complete system and they don't know anything about the servers they connect to, or the WiFi routers they use (and the average person really doesn't care about those things). Plus things like Android, wireless routers, super computers, etc., that all run on Linux are so vastly different from each other that it wouldn't be right to lump them all together because they're all operated very differently and have very different purposes. Android is by technical definition a Linux based OS because it runs the Linux kernel, but it's such a different system from the traditional distros that it really shouldn't be counted with them. ChromeOS (also a Linux based OS) is closer related to traditional "Linux" systems, but still considered different enough to be counted separately. It's like all these Linux systems are fruit. However, there's very different types of fruit out there, apples, dragon fruit, oranges, bananas, etc. that while you can say you eat fruit, most people will want to know which specific fruit you eat because of how different the fruits can be to each other. The rest is perception. When you say "fruit" which one comes to mind? Apples? Bananas? etc. Depending on where you live and sometimes what you do for a living, that answer will change. The same is often true for "Linux". If you live around a lot of IT folks, tech savvy, or are a hobbyist, or a paid pro yourself, what exactly comes to your mind when you hear "Linux" may be pretty different depending on your exposure to it. A lot of times when someones goes to represent "fruit" with an image, an apple is used. Just as with "Linux" you usually see Tux and the GNU/Linux distros lumped together. Neither representation is perfect and both leave out a LOT of other things, but it's better than nothing I suppose. You can try and change it if you'd like, and good luck with that...
@coolsimpsons3 жыл бұрын
Very well said. I also like that when you are talking about traditional "Linux" distros, you put the *GNU* part first in GNU/Linux. Most people, even tech savvy people, don't give enough credit to what GNU provides. I think the word "Linux" is thrown around way too much by both normies and tech savvy people alike. I wonder what Linus Torvalds considers "Linux" to be exactly.
@gwgux3 жыл бұрын
@@coolsimpsons A good question, my guess is the kernel he developed but considering how so many have contributed to it and morphed it into so many different things for so many other projects, it may be something much more. I'm sure someone must've asked him at some point.

Operating systems based on the Linux kernel are now the most popular in the world. Recently, they have pushed the rest of the OS and this trend continues. Over the past year, the following operating systems have been used when surfing the web: 1. Android - 44.17% 2. Windows - 28.96% 3.iOS - 17.46% 4. MacOS - 5.56% 5. Unknown - 1.92% 6. Linux - 0.92% This statistic includes desktops, tablets, mobile phones and consoles. Android is based on the Linux kernel. Thus, in total, 45.09% of the OS is used when surfing the web on the Linux kernel. iOS and MacOS are Unix-like operating systems. The latter account for 68.11% of the operating systems that are used for Internet surfing. If you look at the data only for desktop computers, we get the following picture: 1. Windows - 76.31% 2. MacOS - 14.66% 3. Unknown - 4.88% 4. Linux - 2.43% 5. Chrome OS - 1.72% 6. FreeBSD - 0.01% Chrome OS is based on the Linux kernel. All 500 of the world's most powerful supercomputers run a Linux distribution. According to W3Cook, Linux powers the servers that run 96.5 percent of the world's first million domains. The share of Linux-solutions in the market of embedded systems has reached 50%. In second place with a share of 24% are embedded systems based on their own internal developments. The share of Windows is 19%. Linux is popular with various state and municipal structures in Brazil, India, China, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany. Thus, Linux does not dominate only the PC area. But this situation may change in the near future. China announced on July 1, 2022, an open platform to accelerate the development of its own Linux-based operating system for desktop computers due to strained relations with the United States. And China is a pretty big market. Performance higher than with the Windows 11 operating system (OS) was shown by various Linux distributions of fresh builds. Phoronix conducted a total of 103 different performance tests. In 53.4% of cases, Clear Linux OS, optimized specifically for Intel systems, showed the best result, Ubuntu 22.04 was in second place with 18.4% of test wins, and only in third place was Windows 11 Pro with 15.5% of wins.

Strange Linux, because I think, that it must be higher. And also strange, that you put xbox like another position.... or it was just original and 360 xbox? Because Xbox One has windows 10 too

Some OS are dedicated to only OEM or specific proprietary hardware, like mac OS which will never beat windows or iOS which possibly never gonna heat android.

I now completely understand why they put that TPM requirement in Windows 11, they want to take back their throne, lol.

Why 2009? I think this would have been more interesting if it started in 1980, that way we could see Windows rapidly grow.

Probably because there would be nothing but 30 years of Windows dominating the market. Just like this video began.
