I hate to disillusion you but Big Boy was NOT the most powerful steam locomotive ever built. In fact, it wasn’t even in the top five. In fact, two Yellowstones were on the list, an unlikely You don’t need to take my word for it either. The exhaustive study, “Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America” by Robert A. LeMassena (Sundance Publications, September, 1979) has all the facts about every class of every articulated steam locomotive operated by American railroads. The tractive effort of Big Boy (1941, ALCO) was 135,000 lbs. The Great Northern R-2 class (Great Northern, 1930) listed at 151,000 lbs. The C&O Allegheny was only rated at 110,000 lbs which shows that like Big Boy it’s not size but how much of that size you can bring down to the rail. Even the unassuming Western Pacific’s class 257 nosed out Big Boy by 20,000 lbs. Northern Pacific’s little-known Z-5 Yellowstone (Alco, 1929) was rated at 140,000 lbs as were the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Yellowstones (Baldwin, 1941). All of the eastern coal roads carded classes of articulated locomotives more powerful than Big Boy. Finally, and I’m only mentioning these few one-off examples of single locomotives to quiet the whiners, the Pennsylvania’s “Big Engine” deserves mention and I believe N&W produced one articulated that rated over 160,000 lbs. for short periods of time. So you can see that Big Boy’s size was not something to really brag about when it couldn’t be converted to power. In terms of power-to-weight ratio it didn’t measure up. Again, don’t take my word for it. LaMessena’s terrific book on articulated steam locomotives is a must-have when making claims about most-powerful locomotives.

@@n.v.1258 I wrote in the footnotes so people will know where to look for the information. I want people to do their own research instead of believing everything they are fed. If we had more people doing research then we wouldn’t be in the political cesspool we’re in.

@@douglasskaalrud6865according to my research, the most powerful steam locomotive ever produced was the Virginia XA 2-8-8-8-4 with a tractive effort of over 190,000 lbs.

I'm surprised that you omitted the SS Great Eastern of 1858. 32,000 tons , and the biggest ship in the world for decades. It laid the first transatlantic cable, among other things. Or the SS Great Britain (another Isambard Kingdom Brunel design) of 1843, which also was the world's largest ship (and the first steam Atlantic passenger liner). Sure, neither of these had the power of a Chinese aircraft carrier, but _for their time_ they were the most powerful ships around.

Nicely done presentation; despite the know-it-all commentators that spoil it all by saying stuff about Big Boy and others. I personally am not disappointed. I could care even less about the Foamer Karen Correction Police. If they are so right, then they may certainly make their own KZbin channel, and toot their own whistle. It reminds me of the Mr./Miss know-it-all from grade school. Just relax and enjoy.

Why is the 4014 on this list? You really need to do more homework. Mayby on a good day it would be 7th or 8th on the list of most powerfull steam engines. Never have or never will be on a top 5 list.

Shandong. You have to be kidding me. No way I'd take that ship over Kitty Hawk or Connie when it comes to most powerful steam vehicles as per the title. That is not taking into account the Nimitz Class which are also steam powered albeit nuclear powered instead of coal or oil but we are only talking steam once again. You certainly lost me there.
