I'm open to the disagreement and hate this video will probably continue to generate, but lets be level and cognizant of the fact that the only thing worth spedning $375 on is a pair of limited edition OG Crocs. Also don't get it twisted, I have MAD respect for Daiwa and the JDM game, but bring more to the table then a "duralumin" super shallow spool, an 8.1:1 gear ratio, and a few aesthetic adjustments. This is has been done before, lets see some innovation Daiwa! Thanks for watching, keep fishing. Never stop. --Young Plug

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

Ah Hahaha ha! Awesome Jon B! I actually agree with you here. There is a limit on what a reel should cost when it only has a few jobs. The highest quality reel, rod and line doesn't make someone better at fishing. Once you have skills and technique then you can find what suits you. That doesn't mean it has to cost a ton of money. But if it does and it's what you are looking for you just gotta bite the bullet if you really want it. This video was worth sharing. Thanks man.

I think fishing products by in large have gotten completely ridiculous. A good baitcasting rod and a good spinning rod and your done. A hand full of soft plastics a few surface type lures some mid depth some deep water lures and call it a day. 95% of everything made in the fishing industry is designed to catch you the fisherman and not the fish.
@MrCamoman127 жыл бұрын
J.L Hoffy I fish lakes, cricks, and ponds in the Midwest, I've never set up more than 3 poles.. bass setup, pan fish set up for blugill and crappie, and one for cats and carp, and just covered 90% of the spectrum of fish for the midwest. I'm not sure how anyone could need 6+ poles that in theory all catch fish.
@MrCamoman127 жыл бұрын
J.L Hoffy what's funny is I use dropshot, texis, wacky, shaky heads, and even sometimes even Carolina rigs... All on the same 6.4:1 baitcaster on a 6'6 medium action rod and have caught fish on all but the Carolina rig in the last week (didn't use the Carolina rig) all within the last week.. and all on the same 10pd high impact line. and on the same pond last night used wacky, shaky head, and even a spin jig and was and most of the group didn't catch a fish. I caught 6 and my buddy caught 3 and no one else did. You don't 10 setups to catch a fish. case, point, end of story
@MrCamoman127 жыл бұрын
J.L Hoffy also fish on lake 1 week out of every year, and multiple cricks and streams around here. I obviously go up on my bass poles for the lake 3-5 lb test with bigger soft plastics and maybe a lure or always have my cat, and carp poles with 30lb or so. The only thing that chances for a crick is I use my pan fishing poles. either a micro or ultra light with an open face and some 6-8lb line.

I didn't bash the Type R though, I actually really like that reel being that it walked the line between finesse and other fishing applications. You get an extra 25yds of 8lb capacity and the craftsmanship is FAR superior than any of the reels I mentioned in this video.

I have or have owned all of these reels you have in your links so I can give you a little history on all of them. First most are or were JDM only reels so they were designed around the Japanese market demands not the US. Daiwa, Shimano and Abu all have interesting options available only Japan. Why Tackle Warehouse only brought Daiwa's JDM offerings over I have no clue. The SS is the "poor man's steez", same frame but no clicking cast control cap, single disk drag and a zaion (plastic) handle side plate. The steez has more "clickies" and is more refined but costs more. The SV is the spool, which stands for stress free versatile. It is probably the easiest casting spool on the market in all forms (SS, steez, sv105, sv103) The 103 is the size, the larger the number the smaller the capacity. You can get the SS for about $240 from japan to your door but TW is having a clearance on the rest of the ss's currently. The SS AIR is the SS but with the AIR spool which is designed for casting ultralight lures (under 1/16oz) with casting gear. BFS (bait finesse system) is the JDM concept of using these specialized reels along with light power rods to fish Japan's very high pressured lakes where bass won't bite the average bass lure at times. By using casting gear vs spinning you have more accuracy and control of how the lure enters the water to prevent spooking nervous fish. This type of fishing is the hardest for the US angler to understand "WHY?" but don't knock it until you try it. By entire BFS combos weigh 7.5oz and are a blast to fish with. You can get these for under $300 to your door and both Shimano and Abu have reels for this as well in the same price range. The T3's have been phased out for the most part but they were Daiwas first generation full zaion reel and the first t-wing reel. The MX was Japans version of the t3 ballistic sold here. But the MX had a few upgrades and was lighter than the ballistic. The flip open hood scared some but it was just part of the the clutch release system. The t3's were and are still some of the best reels made for flipping and pitching because by closing the hood by hand the gears would engage without turning the handle allowing for very quick hooksets if the fish grabbed the jig on the fall. But the zaion construction made the reels feel very hollow. You can get these for cheap now ($100-140) The sv105 which first came out in Japan as the alphas sv is the old Daiwa alphas (sold here in the states as the sol) with the sv 105 sized spool. These are very small aluminum framed reels with the same concept as the shimano 50 sized reels. They can cast lures from 3g on up very well. Virtually the same sized as Daiwas tiny px-r they are great for those who prefer smaller reels. They can be had for under $200 to your door and dollar for dollar are very hard to beat for smoothness and casting performance. Due to line capacity limitations they aren't the best for big baits but are a fun reel. The sv103 which is simply the og zillion modified to take the popular 34mm spools that are used in most of daiwas other low profile reels (t3, steez, ss ect) instead of the 36mm the og zillion had. Solid and smooth but a bit heavy by today's standards they are good on heavier longer rods to help balance them out. Are any of these needed over a cheaper reel? No not at all but I won't tell a Ferrari owner that a Honda is all he needs. Its all about whats worth it to that angler. People who've never fished an NRX rod would be hard pressed to drop $500 on a rod but once you do try one then your $200 dollar rod all of a sudden feels sub par. Will a $300+ reel make fish jump into your boat, no but fish a top end Daiwa or Shimano and you get the same feeling going back to a cheaper reels. The top tier reels are the Ferrari's of the fishing reel world and they are true works of art. The Honda may get you from point A to B just like the Ferrari but the Ferrari is a lot more fun getting you there.

Daiwa = Value......compared to Shimano. I own 8 Ryoga reels. Yes, they are highly into the "enthusiast" reel market, and people who are real REEL enthusiasts. I had some smart ass come on my channel and tell me I ought to be buying a Lews reel. I know what a Lews reel is, and the ones today aren't like the REAL Lews speed spools with the V spool I had in 1970. I buy Daiwa's because the value is there. And not bass reels, from Tackle Warehouse. But true saltwater reels, like Saltists etc. Comparisons to a Saltist in a Shimano is the Tekota in same price range, and the Tekota can't even compare, in Value. But then again I love my old 8 Curado 300 DSV's as much as all my customized Zillions. So what's in a name? Not much. "THINK ENTUSIAST" when you think Daiwa.
@CaptDavesSportfishing8 жыл бұрын
+Mike M I have noticed that over the years....(I've been fishing all waters for 40+ years) that Shimano is getting a little big for their britches. KInda high on the prices. I bought 4 Daiwa Airds "saltwaters" for my customers. They are light and have the "features" I wanted. (the key reason we buy what we buy, the features WE are looking for) On Ebay right now you can get left-overs or even this years for $65 or less. The newest Fuego is brand new and has like 11 bearings and all the bells and whistles for about $129. More inexpensive and freshwater baitcasters have graphite frames, to make them lighter for you all day casting guys. When JoJoBarz33 grows up and can afford to be a Enthusiast, he'll "get it"......the same reason some drive a brand new Mercedes or Bugati , "it only drives down the road"......But, does it so much nicer than a Lincoln!

I'm a die hard daiwa guy. couldn't agree more, i am an enthusiast myself. customized daiwa jdm reels and fishing them. One day Jon B should take the Daiwa Ryoga 1016H and hook up on a 35# yellowtail. Then he will understand why Daiwa has that rep. Caught a Yellowtail 35# on 20 braid + 17lb fluoro 2ft leader with a 7'11 xtra heavy teramar pair with a daiwa ryoga 1016hl. yes, small reel for a monster fish. I landed the sucker in 2.5hrs... +Thunderbird Lew's and Abu Garcia reels are made in the same factory in Korea. Doyo Industries is the specific factory. There is no competition between them, they're made with essentially the same materials. Lew's in fact has ZERO innovation, because they don't even make their own reels. Also, to the guy who says Abu Garcia is innovative because they have "the fastest reel," that really isn't an impressive feat. Any company could cut 9.X:1 gears if they wanted to. Daiwa has a 9.1:1 gear option in their TWS Zillion series, too (same speed as the Revo Rocket). Daiwa and Shimano (and possibly Ardent, Quantum) are the only companies that are making their own reels in their own factories right now.

I agree 100% on how unnecessary it is to spend that much on a reel. At the moment I have two baitcasting setups. The first is for frogs and is a 6.3:1 bass pro shops reel loaded with 65 pound braid on a medium heavy veritas 2.0. The other is a jack of all trades setup with a 6.3:1 bass pro reel (two years newer) with dual braking system loaded with 17 pound floro on a 7' medium veritas rod. Both reels cost less than $80 and have never given me any grief. They are smooth, strong, and sturdy.

Congrats bro! The best review ever. I agree 100%. Im surfcaster (surf fish) in Long Island, New York. A lot guys in here, I mean, almost all of them, use the VS reels. Its like $1000 reel. I use $100 reel to fish shoulder by shoulder with them, and same times I catch more fish and the big ones. Take care. nice video.

Love the product breakdown. Daiwa was the first regular fishing rod I owned. 6'6" medium action, lighter tip for perch fishing. Love the rod. As a matter of fact, I still have the rod to this day. However, I've never had good luck with their reels. I actually really like Abu Garcia reels (I taught myself how to use a baitcaster on a black max). Just my preference. No hate from me. I live in Ohio as well and love the show. Come up to the Cleveland area and fish damnit! I'm always fishing. Until the ice over that is lol

ME and my dad both got the same thing and I can't wait till spring comes and we can start using the Gunnison Fishing Float tubes, and the cool part is that it's camo. On the box it says you can hunt from it too but I woody mostly use it for fishing. Awesome video and Catch a big one!

Hey Jon, what is your opinion on the Okuma Citrix "a" Casting Reel. It costs $120. Would this reel be worth the money or should i get something else. Also what reels do you have that are a low price but worth the money and are reliable.

Let me start by saying that I'm a long time Jon B. fishing fan going through some old(er) videos....what happened to this guy!? Seriously, where did this Jon shipwreck cause I'll go rescue him. Jon, if you're reading this, remember the first DC reel that you got in the mail while still in college? You had fire in your eyes buddy, and you were taking on the big boys. Then GOOGAN tamed the beast; I get it, contracts, sponsorships, and mass brand appeal pays great. I just miss this guy in this video. I still watch and support you because I like you.

You would love the Tatula Reels. They cast a mile due to the T-Wing. I personally use the Diawa Coastal Reels for fresh and salt. They are super smooth.

That was a great way to explain the way some of these reels are named thank you for that

I like these kinds of videos and I'd definitely like to see more like this. Maybe it's just that I don't really care about all the super specific nonsense like some of these other guys but I don't disagree with anything you said here. Also you're the reason I own a Lew's SS1 haha.

I got a Quantum Pulse Bait caster from a friend. Bought a Ugly Stick medium heavy GX2 spinning reel combo at Wal-Mart for $34.00. Put my Pulse Bait caster reel on the spin Ugly Stick medium heavy. This combo put together cost under $75. I caught bass all summer long. No issues! You say why put a bait caster reel on a spin rod. Believe it or not it works great the eyes on the pole are bigger and there no finger hook on the back side of the pole. I just wrap my hand around the reel and hold on to it. Put 20 pd low vis green braid line on the reel. The fish catch them selves no stretch. Senko to spinner bait. Reeled in every one. Shawn

I agree 100 %.These companies think everyone really cares about all the bells and whistles and WANT to pay hundreds of dollars just for a fishing reel? I used to be that way decades ago and felt like a real sucker. Now I enjoy buying and collecting old Zebco 202's and 404's, Fixing them up and using them to CATCH FISH WITH! LOL! I've bought dozens of them at yard sales and flea markets and gave many outfits to kids. Has Diawa done that? I still like my nice stuff and still use it, but I've re-discovered fishing is supposed to be fun. Lets keep it that way, right?
