Truly superb! Also, your vocabulary is off the charts. Thank you for showing us the full variety of trout in New Mexico. I once lived there and took some of the sixth grade kids I taught in Deming to fish for rainbows at a stream in Silver City. We had great success and the kids were gleeful. MIke, your videos are absolutely great. As a NM native and fisheries/wildlife biologist of NMSU, I have to give a shout out to you and your work. I was involved with the Gila trout recovery effort in mid 80's with Dr. Paul Turner. Great work and so much fun. So glad to see you promoting conservation and awareness of NM natural resources. I live in Placitas NM and get out as much as possible with pack, rifle, bow or rod. Completed my trout challenge a few years ago, fantastic program for sure. Hope to run into on the water or in the field some time. All the best to you my friend.

I’ve enjoyed your videos and your attempts to educate the fishing public on environmental issues. I am originally from NM and now live in Alaska. I visited my home state and completed the challenge last summer. You’re video was very nicely done and full of facts and a nice guide for anyone wanting to try this challenge. I’m from Northern NM and caught all but my Gila in the same region. I have an amazing Brook spot but I only share it with close friends and family haha. It’s too sacred. People in AK look at me funny when I say I can’t wait to go home to do some fishing, NM is amazing. Actually my profile pic is one of my NM Brook trout.

Moved to NM in June 2023. I joined/subscribed to FLY ALL SZN when I saw your first trip from Big Arsenic Spring into the Rio Grande Gorge. That was September of 23 and I planned my next trip there and executed in October. LOVE. Hiked it with my 2 year old in my Kelty Kid Carrier and fished upstream for a few hours, landing my first Rio Grande Cutthroat. BUT, since learning of the invasive devastation on the "locals", I'm intent on seeking Brown Trout. And then today, I see this wonderfully delivered documentary and appreciate not just your adventures, but also your art and mission. SO, I humbly request that you share with me the location of that Brown Trout submission. I grew up in Scottsdale, AZ and am accustomed to long, perilous hikes into foreboding canyons in search of those beautiful spotted fish... Humbly, I ask....

though I now reside in St Louis when I was young I lived in Socorro, NM in the 80s as a kid. We fell in love with the state everything from the amazing unique food, the variety of geographical types from desert to high mountain wilderness. We used to fish snow lake at the Gila wilderness and also Quemado lake in central NM near arizona border. Elk, antelope, mule deer, etc. are common sightings. New mexico is one of best secrets in America and truly is "The Land of enchantment". The Gila river would also be a great fit for the Tenkara style fly fishing. I watched a video of a man using Tenkara rod and he was quite successful. Also i wonder if you could somehow present your videos to New Mexico tourism division? You would make a great conservationist and tourism representative.

Two streams in northern New Mexico, you can hit everything but a Gila. One day, browns, brookies, rainbows, and and Rio cutties and hybrids. In nearly all cases,.Rio cutties are game and fish work. Which is why we get so many hybrids in the Rio Grande. I always argue that many of the Rio Cutties stocked in the Rio are just feeding the pike. You will have to try pike on the fly

Good video. I've been flyfishing in NM since the early 70s. Sadly, draught and climate change has taken a terrible toll on trout streams. It was pretty incredible in the 80s when we had several years of heavy snowpack, The Chama River below the Colorado line was at one time a world class brown trout fishery. This was on private posted land which is probably why it was so good, bait fisherman can destroy a trout stream. Anyhow, was nice to see teh Penasco Box is still in good shape!

Great video! I was just contemplating a run at the NM trout challenge. I’ll have to toughen up. As a 57 yr old with more than a few extra pounds the two times I’ve been down the Rio and boulder hopping, the hike up about killed me. So the idea of the Gila hikes make me pause. Not much of a tent camper either, so that limits my reach. You definitely make it look easy though I know it’s not. Really great production as usual.

Thank you, if for nothing else but giving us the pronounciation of "Oncorhynchus"...in all seriousness, I like going for the natives the best, but if it's at least a wild fish, that's true fishing in my eyes. In the Smokies, there are well-established populations of wild rainbows; at the same time, the stocking trucks operate just outside the park boundaries in the cooler months. A lot of these stockers make their way upstream into the park, where they're treated just like any other fish. I remember fishing near the park boundary one time, and catching a 14-inch stocker - way above my average, but the fish hardly fought. A little while later, I hooked into a 6-inch wild rainbow - it hit the reel. I guess your perception becomes reality.
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 2 жыл бұрын
Duality of thought is important. Non natives aren't good for the natives.. But I sure do like catching the wild fish... It is a weird scenario. I would like to make it to the Smokies one day.
@ianjones6910
@ianjones6910 2 жыл бұрын
@@FLYALLSZN You were close a while ago - you just have to adjust your expectations; the Smokies aren't a big trout fishery, at least compared to the West. The one exception is the browns - some truly large brown trout are taken, but they're heavily pressured by some fine fly fishermen.
