I have the flex 30reg -wide. I don’t even use the straps, the cut is that good.I have used it in the mid 20s,with just thermals on. I am a warm sleeper. I love my quilt. Draft collar is great. It is getting warmer out. Last trip unzipped it and used as blanket. Very versatile.

This review helped optimize my purchase. I concluded that Katabatic was the quilt I wanted to go with. Knowing I was only going to own one quilt, I purchased the Flex 15 and added two ounces of overfill. Because of your review, I knew to purchase the regular wide version, and after an entire season’s worth of use under my belt, I would have to say that this is my dream quilt. Your reviews convinced me that a quilt would be for me, and then review had me conclude that wide was mandatory. I now own a super light very featuresk quilt that’s comfort rating is -12C which results in the best outdoor sleep experience I’ve ever had.

Hello, I consider buying a Flex but I hesitate between the 15 and the 22. Could you please tell me if you can get too hot in it, and if yes, from what temperature ? This would help me ! Thanks !! 😀

@@aubépine-coeurThe beauty of the Flex line is that you have all the features to control your temp. It’s good for the cold, but you don’t have to suffer in the heat.

I have the same quilt. The design and quality is top notch with the snap and everything. I found that it works well in the warm temperatures, but when the temperature drops to around freezing, you will exsperience drafts even with the strap attachment system. I went with the extra wide and it helps a bit, but will still not eliminate drafts completely. I have never become a fan of the pad attachment system. During my last longer travel at one point my Thermarest Xlite popped and I moved to a foam pad, which made the pad attachment system useless weight. Dont think I will use the pad attachment system as I move forward, because it's just one more thing to adjust when I'm in camp and it does not work with foam and therefore less versatile. Then I'm left with the straps that connects the sidem haven't tested it that much yet. Hmm one thing I wonder about is how the elastic along the side compares to edge tension controle of Nunatak or Ugq bandit . Does it work as well?

Katabatic: buy once, cry once. The Palisade is my favourite sleeping bag/quilt ever. A note on their shells being MiC: they actually *dropped* the price of their quilts after they moved shell production to China. They were more expensive before IIRC.

Seems like a solid quilt! I was surprised the temp rating wasn't lower just looking at how lofty it is. I'm not surprised it seems to outperform it's rating! I'm also a big fan of the Econ Burrow! Definitely more in my price range than this one, but this definitely has more features!

Great review Justin! I’ve been using the flex 22 for the last four years and I have to agree with a lot of your points: I’d probably buy the wide version if I had to buy it again. Otherwise, I found it kinda hard to lock down the quilt in a way so I don’t get drafts from the side when I’m tossing and turning at night - especially with wider sleeping pads. It’s not a deal breaker but it really can get annoying sometimes.

You should test out the Cedar Ridge Outdoor Helium quilt! There aren’t any good reviews on it and I’ve been trying to decide whether to get that or the Katabatic Flex.

Insanely good quilt. I put it right up there with the UGQ Bandit. And yeah, unfortunately, that savings won't trickle down because the cost of shipping overseas, especially by shipping container, has risen exorbitantly as of late. Probably quintupled. I'd be surprised if their prices don't increase in the near future like UGQ. Such is life. But hey, there are still great top quilts made 100% in the US, e.g. Jacks R Better, Enlightened Equipment, Nunatak (my favorite), and a few others.

As A Katabatic Palisade owner I can reassure folk that the snaps get easier with use ( a couple of hundred miles of overnights). Getting in and out of the quilt and adjusting from the moving mode to the locked-in mode are then much quicker and easier. These quilts are clearly of superior design, quality and performance compared to many of the typical UL choices. The majority of "cheaper" UL quilts are rated to extreme temperature ratings rather then comfort temperature ratings like Katabatic. This means that by the time you are buying a 10F quilt to compete with the Katabatic 22F quilt you've lost the on-paper price and weight advantages.

The econo burrow use to be a lot more economy priced. I have and old set (top and bottom quilts) from hammock gear that cost together what one modern quilt costs.

I consider the Katibatic Flex 22 quilt my best backpacking purchase. I’ve had it down to rated temp and was warm and cozy. All my other gear I dream about upgrades, but not this quilt.

@@aubépine-coeur my experience is that the quilts are comfortable to their rated temp. I also have the quilt rated right above the flex 30deg that I use for summer and just keep it open at the mattress. I’ve found I can use a sea to summit bag liner and pick up some extra cold temp margin (10 deg or so). Here in the southern Appalachians I’ve found the 22 degree rating covers any winter camping I want to do.

@@aubépine-coeur I have the 22. I am not too hot. I would say it depends where you are sleeping and if you are a hot or cold sleeper. I think it’s hard to get too hot in a quilt. You can always stick your foot out. If you are on the fence get the warmer one
