Man, loss of sleep can do some crazy things to you, especially mentally and emotionally. I have mental illnesses and if I go too long without sleep it can make it thousands of times worse. Now that I'm on meds it doesn't really happen as much because we determined that I have a sleep disorder so I'm doped up on sleep meds every night, but when I wasn't on meds, there were times that I would go 2 or 3 days with maybe 3 or 4 hours of sleep and it'd make me go insane. I'd be so angry, I'd be hateful to my family by cursing them and screaming, I'd get depressed I would get suicidal and my thoughts would drive me so crazy that I would ball up in a corner of a room crying and would rock myself until I calmed down. Once I finally crashed, I would sleep for a day or two. Sleep is EXTREMELY important and necessary in order to have a good quality of life.

What sleep meds help? After 12 back surgeries, 2 weeks in ICU, 3 months in physical rehab and a year in a retirement home with a full body cast on has left me with insomnia. Nothing works so far .

Ive never went trough the same as you and i hope you are doing better but ive made the mistake of sleep depriving myself for a year where i would only sleep around 5 hours a night because i went to work and stayed up late to have more time for myself.. that ended up having negative effects on my job performance, social skills and overall physical health i cant even imagine having some sort of mental illness and deal with that

When I was in my heavy using days, I stayed awake for ten days straight. They say when this happens, you fall asleep without even knowing it for milliseconds at a time, to keep your brain and body going… I don’t remember any sleep sessions. I do remember hallucinating very vividly, ramped paranoia and a three day “nap” afterwards. I lost so much weight. I would put food in my mouth and it felt like I had put dry powder in my mouth. I would force myself to eat and drink because I knew my body had to have sustenance. I am so grateful to be off that junk!

I remember in the Marine Corps going beyond 48 hrs numerous times. We worked 18-20 hr days when we deployed for 6-7 months on a couple deployments. Being in good shape helps you be able to tolerate less sleep IMHO. Probably more so dealing with the symptoms of sleeplessness.

I done a sleep deprivation exercise early on in my army career, after 5 days most people where hallucinating, me included, after a few got med vacted out the docs stepped in and pulled the exercise saying the instructors are being bell ends, they all got rtu,ed , lots of threats came my way as several instructors where from the unit I was going too, my response was I can't knock you out here but I'll flatten the lot of you when I get there, they all apologised once I got there!

There was technically a sleep experiment, but it only lasted 2 to 3 days and was not performed again. Thankfully there was no ripping of flesh or vital organs. I'm pretty sure it was done in America. There wasn't any gas, either. They were just supposed to stay awake and were kept awake with loud music as the stimulus. It did mess them up psychologically, but no one was begging for that sweet, sweet gas. Unfortunately, many prisoners have been tortured by loud music being played on repeat, but the guards call it "fun" instead of an experiment. Still, none of that sweet gas that makes them wanna eat their arm
