Most Won world Snooker Championship comparison
The World Snooker Championship is the longest-running and most prestigious tournament in professional snooker. It is also the richest, with total prize money in 2022 of £2,395,000, including £500,000 for the winner. First held in 1927, it is now one of the three tournaments (together with the UK Championship and the invitational Masters) that make up snooker's Triple Crown Series.

Very tough competition these days. looking at the 2023 draw, if the 1st round goes on form, every 2nd round match will involve a world champion. to win you might well have to beat 5 world champions in a row, that’s mental!

It's very difficult to compare players from different era's. In the modern era, starting in 1969 when John Spencer won the first of his three titles then Ronnie O'Sullivan is, in most peoples opinions, the greatest of all time. Certainly both Ray Reardon and Stephen Hendry are on record as saying such. It's right that playing conditions and the way the World Championship was played in the past era, when Joe & Fred Davis, and John Pullman won so many titles was quite different. But it's also right to remember that in those long off days the final was often played over the best of 70+ frames, and a week's playing time. It was also a challenge competition in those days, rather than a knock out tournament. The only player who straddled both era's was Fred Davis, making it to the semi finals in 1978 (the second year the tournament was played at The Crucible), at the grand old age of 64, and losing to Perrie Mans. It's probably best not to try and list both the "old" era and the "modern" era together.

@eccehomer8182
@eccehomer8182 Жыл бұрын
It was a different era of snooker with very few entrants. One of the finals that Joe Davis won he got a bye to the final, in others he got byes to the semi-final. To put into context the standard of play at the time, Davis didn't make a century at the World Championship until his second to last win in 1940, but then he was miles ahead of anyone else at the time, who knows how he would have competed nowadays? It's like comparing Juan Manuel Fangio to Lewis Hamilton. All of John Pullman's titles also came from a series of challenge matches between 1964 & 1968. The modern era began with the formation of the WPBSA when John Spencer won his first title in 1969. A lot of followers of snooker think of the modern era as the start of the World Championship proper... so that wouldn't include the likes of Joe & Fred Davis, John Pullman, Walter Donaldson or Horace Lindrum. Only two players that played in a final prior to this ever made it to the final again... John Pullman in 1970 and Eddie Charlton in 1973 & 1975... all lost to Ray Reardon.

So, why do the media constantly report that Ronnie O’Sullivan equalled the record last year - he’s got to win another 8 times to equal the record!
@elrondsch
@elrondsch Жыл бұрын
Because those "in front" are from a different era of snooker. Before all the modern day standards and rules were in place. The tables were different, tournaments and matches were unregulated. So yes, in modern snooker - Ronnie has set and beaten every record possible.
@martinthody9335

@@elrondsch I agree the other players were from a different era and Ronnie is, without a shadow of a doubt the best player of my life time (I’ve been a snooker fan since the late 1970s) and he’s my favourite player and the reason I still love to watch the game. Notwithstanding it’s almost impossible to compare players from different eras in any sport, those players were still the best of their respective contemporaries and some won the world title, in whatever form it took, more times than Ronnie.
@elrondsch
@elrondsch Жыл бұрын
@@martinthody9335 Look, if you invented a new game and there would only be you and your friend playing. So you make a world championship event every year and one of you wins. So if you do this for 20-30 years both of you might be 15 times world champions. Then lets say the game becomes mainstream and there are thousands of professionals playing. And each year there is a different winner of the world title. So what would we see in 30 years? 15-20 names winning 1-5 titles each.

That's why most commentators refer to "the modern era" which began in 1969. Most consider the order as being, 1&2) Hendry/O'Sullivan, 3&4) S Davis/Reardon, 5&6) J Higgins/Selby, 7&8) Williams/Spencer
