Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Z-Wave Lock Install with Home Assistant

I've had one of these paired with my home assistant for about a year now. Best lock I've used so far. I'm using a z wave door sensor to trigger the auto lock and life360 for auto unlock. I paired it completely in standalone mode, no account. I've only replaced the battery one time.

I have 2 of them I've been using for about 3 months. I love them. The range on the zwave is amazing and I've never had any problems with them.

Are you using them with HA? can you setup/revoke access codes through HA? Or are you using the app for that?

@@rykr yes, I use them with HA and use them with several automation. They are quick and don't have any problems. To the best of my knowledge you can not set up access codes for them in HA as there isn't really an integration for them, they simply connect to zwave. That being said, if you need remote connection beyond just lock/unlock, you can buy a wifi connector for them. They are great locks and it would be hard to top them IMHO. In fact, I got a 3rd one now to. Lol

Does HA recognize the multiple users' passcodes and the finger prints? Or this should be done through Keymaster integration?

Have they added to the z-wave integrated featuresso that you can tell who opened the lock? I used that pretty extensively with the Kwikset locks to create automations based on who opened the door.

No. Unfortunately, I only discovered this after I had bought and installed the lock. Going to return it.

The website show has U-Bolt WiFi version. Will this integrate with home assistant without the Z-wave hub? How does it using WiFi?

Hi... I have the prior model for that reason... instead of a finger print sensor it has a physical key... Its pretty much identical but it has a key rather than the finger print sensor... Its been pretty good (if you can live with battery life of 4-6 weeks)... Mine is wifi which probably uses more power than the Z-wave

You can use a physical key. For short duration power outages you would place your home assistant machine and networking gear on a UPS battery backup.

Power outage is irrelevant as the lock unlock/locks from battery. comm with HA would be down, but the lock works. Dead battery... there is a manual key backup.. but HA does keep track of battery %... certainly not an application of battery I would let hit 0%.

I love smart locks, but to be honest I hate they ones that actually look like some kind of smart lock on the outside. I really prefer to just have a lock that looks like a traditional key driven lock on the outside, with the smarts all on the inside. That's why I originally went for August locks as they actually keep the existing key on the outside. I rarely, maybe never, would use a keypad to unlock a door as that is just as hands on, if not more so, as using a traditional key. There are a few more options than August around now for what I like, but I ended up with August as it was easiest to get at the time and it's been totally reliable.

Hmm this *seems* not to be cloud dependant (unless you rely on only the app i guess) i wonder if the wifi version behaves the same... :) What zwave hub are you using ?

It isn't cloud dependent for the version I have (z-wave). It's all local. I am using an Aeotec z-wave hub.

I'm having a problem with the application, I can't register the device. "The shared device is under the shared address v1 version app cannot share devices to this version" I receive this message what can I do?

I've got an HA VM with a forwarded USB zwave/zigbee combo stick. Works fine. We are adding a second very large building to the property though about 500ft away. We have network connectivity. How can I setup a second z-wave/zigbee radio out in the new building for the same HA instance?

This is how I would do it: Add a second HA Pi, a z-wave stick, ZwaveJS2Mqtt and connect ZWaveJS2MQTT to your broker that both HA instances use and you can then control/monitor your zwave devices via MQTT.

I like the U-Bolt and its features. I'd like to hear how the battery life compares to the Kwikset (which is about seven months for me). Also, can different user codes trigger different automations in Home Assistant? I have yet to figure that out with Kwikset and HA. Thanks!

I've had them installed for about 3 months on our back door and garage door. Both looks still show 100% and they are used consitantly (7-8 times a day). Personally, I feel they got good battery life, however I have nothing to compare them to.

Based on your video and how great you made the Z-Wave with home assistant look I ordered this lock. I fought this lock for a 3 hours and the only way I can get it to connect is Legacy / S0. Any thoughts?

Same problem. And even connecting that way, the lock does not respond to Z-Wave commands. I also never got the blue flashing light (per the app's instructions) on the lock when I put it in inclusion mode. U-tec's support and customer service are, to put it mildly, sub-standard.

I had similar results at first. Once I properly excluded after that failures to get it added other than "Node 7" I finally got it to pair and see it as the ubolt lock. I had been switching back and forth between the apps during inclusion and didn't catch that warning about that causing issues/failures . Once I stayed in the home assistant app I saw it ask for the 5 digit code and I knew I was on my way! Good luck!

I FINALLLY got this paired correctly after trying about 20 times. No specific "right" way to do this ......just sheer persistence. Apparently the flashing blue light supposedly to indicate PAIRING mode as instructed in the App is NOT necessary. I talked to U-tec "support" , but they didn't say anything about this obvious error in their documentation. It (whether U-tec or simply Z-wave itself) should not be this hard and frustrating. Sheesh.

Can this be installed only from the inside, as a "blind" lock, no access from the outside at all ? Bolts seem to screw from the inside, wondering if no connecting the keyboard at all would disable the lock at all

Even if it has to have that keypad plate on the outside, there is nothing preventing you from getting a cover that gets screwed into place with the panel that blocks access to the outside controls. Alternatively program the fingerprint sensor with a small toe, set auto-lock to lock when the door sensor (separate) detects that the door is closed, and set up a 20 digit code for entry if that's possible (or longer) making it effectively unusable. but I would think any competent sheet metal worker could make up a cover that blocks the access.

When you make the video (part where you enter codes with you phone), you should use some other way to hide what you type... It's too easy to see what you enter as pin codes with your phone's onscreen keyboard. At 5:26 and 8:12

This lock is crap. Batteries died every month. Locked me out twice in the 3 months I've had it. Has battery powered turn only. Also 4xAA batteries won't stay connected internally if the door slams hard like a 9V will. Expensive garbage.
