HOLY Frig'N Shoot! IT WORKED!!! I cant tell you how many of these type of vids I have watched and half way through, got lost, or the process had changed, etc, and just had to give up, this one worked! Overall, had to note my excitement, and wanted to shre some heartbreaks along the way, for laughs or etc. - 10:39 - (due to my paranoia, trying to meticulously follow along) We dont actually see you hit "submit" it just jumps to the next screen and after multiple rewinds and fast forwards, I can see a wisp of a "creating" in the bottom right that gave me the confidence to move forward - 16:18 - LOL I was gaining confidence and had already pasted the WRONG ID in there, and thought, I'll just wait to double check what he says! For anyone getting "Can't link" errors - you *must* delete your old Application Credentials first! I've wasted hours because of this. 1. Go to "Devices & Services" 2. Click the 3 dots in the top right 3. Click "Application Credentials" 4. Select your old credentials, then click "Remove Selected" @mostlychris would be great if you could add this step or just pin a comment. Thanks for this excellent video!

@@Willmoyse Delete them from Home assistant. Go to integrations, top right three dots, click, find credentials for nest and delete. I've been trying this for over a month and just got it integrated because I missed this step and never seen it mentioned anywhere else but here.

This was super helpful! Although, I am facing an interesting issue where instead of it populating all of my devices as shown just after linking account to Home Assist 18:50, it prompts 'Configure Cloud Pub/Sub topic. I can confirm that the Pub/Sub topic name listed in HA is correct to what is shown in the Device Access Console, yet when I hit 'submit' it just throws 'Unknown error occurred'. For what it is worth. I just paid the $5 before watching this video and I even deleted my Device Access (nest) project and started over and still the same result.

Made it. At some moment I had to have input the wrong credentials, I had to delete them from the menu and create the correct ones. Once created Home Assistant keeps using them and starts at the project ID step, not the credentials step. But Things work now. This was a huge help !

Man thank you so much. I was not able to integrate Nest (following the documentation from HA to the letter). I don't know what changed but I followed your video, and when you said "Delete your device management app if you have issues" I did it and recreated it. That's the only thing I changed, and voilà ! Also it's important to be connected with the same email adress between Google and HA, but you said it too. People, this is a perfect guide, follow it step by step and it should work.

Thanks for updating the video. I was less than successful the last time. A couple of takeaways that might help others. Basically what I had before was correctly configured except the Desktop versus Web Application. Once I deleted those credentials I also needed to update the Device. You are really configuring two distinct Google products. The first part was setting up access to Google API. The second part was linking Nest to your Google project. Not sure if others didn't find that very clear. I also have more than one Home Assistant running and the redirect after authentication went to the other one. I just updated the URL in the browser location bar and got a blank page. When I went to the browser tab with Home Assistant it was ready to continue. Thanks again.

Thanks for the pointers. I think I mentioned the linking but it might not have been clear. In the my.homeassistant.... you have to specify the correct location for the device you are integrating with. I originally had it pointing to Pi but changed to my Blue so I could run the integration.

Ok, I have followed these steps and have gotten further but now (11/15/24) I get a popup which says Configure Cloud Pub/Sub topic. It shows the Device Access Console pub/sub topic name but when I hit submit I get "unknown error occured". Looking around the web I see that nest has yet again made changes and we now have to create a pub/sub topic in the google cloud console. I tried that but the sub name doesn't match what I see on the HA page. Any ideas? Maybe an update video?

I actually found a way to do it for free! What I did is I set up Homebridge (I installed it on the same computer that runs my HA), then added my nest thermostat to Homebridge using the Homebridge Nest plugin (it's very easy with the UI). Then in Home Assistant, I added the integration "HomeKit Controller" (NOT "HomeKit", that caused me problems). Then I was able to control my Nest thermostat in Home Assistant.

Chris - I followed the instructions to your video a month ago, and I was successful in the configuration. I have since installed an extra Nest device, however it did not automatically flow through into Home Assistant. When trying to "Add Device" in HA, I plugged in the Project ID and the DAC Project ID and receive a pop up which reads "Account is already configured." How do you add additional Google/Nest products after the Oauth has already been configured? edit: for context - when I followed your instructions, my Nest thermostat flowed from Google Home into Home Assistant. I recently installed a Nest x Yale lock, however I am unable to add that device into Home Assistant. I also just purchased a Google Nest doorbell (though haven't installed it) and want to ensure I can get that product to flow into Home Assistant as well.

I've read the documentation multiple times, and i believe i'm missing a step somewhere in the process because i receive the error "custom element not found" thanks in advance!

If you are getting that error, either you haven't installed the custom element you are trying to use or you have a cached version of the frontend that will require you to clear your cache in your browser. The easiest thing to do is search HACS for the custom card you are trying to use and install it. If you don't have HACS installed, I have a back to the beginners series that has a section on installing and using HACS. You can also look through my Dashboard playlist that has some custom card stuff in it.

Something i've found frustrating about this integration is that if I add stuff to google home then it doesn't get synced to HA without having to delete and re-add the whole thing. It would be nice if the integration could detect new devices and take you to the permissions screen to add that device.

Make sure you are starting fresh and you have removed your existing credentials so that the UI can provision it all for you.

At 15:15 HA does not let me simply hit submit. I have to enter a Cloud Project ID (which I have because I did all the steps), then I get to a screen that is displayed on the video at 15:15, but instead of simply hitting submit like the video, I have to enter a Device Access Project ID (which I have because I did all the steps), then I am directed toward choosing a google account. My account that I registered the project in shows up, I select it and receive a screen that simply says "Something went wrong. Please contact the developer of this app if the issue persists." The thermostats are from 2018, they were migrated from Nest to Google years ago.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You made it so easy to follow, I really appreciate it. I was able to get my cams setup and working in HA. I will say though, having gone through all these steps to get it integrated in HA, which was one of the most intense integrations I've personally had to setup. Plus having to pay $5, which is a first for any integration. I'm very underwhelmed with what I can do with my Nest Hello and Nest IQ cameras. From my experience, the live stream is several seconds behind what I can see in the Google Home/Nest Apps. Also, the integration for the cameras have no switch to toggle the cameras on/off. The integration just says "Streaming" all the time regardless if it's actually streaming or not. There's also no exposed sensors so I can't even setup motion based automations from the cameras; literally all the integration does is give you a live (delayed) feed and that's it. Anyone else experience then same? At OP, these negatives are at all no way shape or form a negative towards you. Your video walkthrough was absolutely fantastic. Just frustrating to feel constantly let down by Google. Please keep up the excellent content! Thanks for what you do. Edit 1/3/2025 - A Q4 2024 HA Core update made a change to the stream feed and it's no longer delayed! Woot!

I then added another nest doorbell to my home and thought through reloading the integration on home assistant it might just pull the next device through. Didn't. I could really use some help. At 3:28, in your video it shows that your Home Assistant discovered your Nest Thermostat. For me this didn't happen. I went straight to the next window of 3:32. I tried following the rest of the instruction, which went smoothly as your instructions are very clear. So I have all the ID numbers etc. At 15:19 my Home Assistant skips the "Setting up Nest requires Configuring application credentials." and goes straight to the "Add Credentials" of 15:30 where I fill in the name, OAuth Client ID and Secret. (no I did not mix up the different project ID's. Again, thanks for having very clear instructions on that) The part where I just meet a wall is at 17:58. Instead of allowing me to choose an account, it just says it can't find any devices to connect to [my cloud project id]. I used the same @gmail account everywhere in this instruction. What am I missing, and how do I fix it?

Great video. One thing that stumped me is your Nest account needs to be migrated to Google and Google don't support GSuite accounts. So had to re-setup everything against from scratch and repay their $5 fee for the new gmail dev acces.

Man I was stuck on trying to re-add the integration after I removed it from Home assitant. I spent hours on Google and the wiki troubleshooting and couldn't fix the problem. The fix was simple to remove the project from the device console and create a new one. Thanks for pointing that out in the video. I was afraid to remove that because I paid $5. lol

Great video. I had followed your older video right before the process changed. Make sure you follow this exactly and if the first menu to store creds doesn't pop up your old creds are saved and it won't work. Make sure you delete them! Thanks again for the great video

That is a great point. It won't ask again for the creds if they are already stored. After the fact I thought about having that in the video.

THANK YOU !! I had it running about 6 months ago, then removed the configuration from my configuration.yaml, and I was not aware that it would still save those crendentials. For others: The applications are stored in the top right corner of the integration menu, the 3 dots. There was my old and no longer working credentials.

Hi Chris @ 2:45 in your video when you click add integration, my HA just gives me an error. I click on add integration and it asks me if I want to add the Nest in HA and then I see an error message that reads: "This integration does not support configuration via the UI. If you followed this link from the Home Assistant website, make sure you run the latest version of Home Assistant." I tried just clicking on Add Integration from inside Home Assistant and then doing everything else but its not working for me and I assume it has something to do with the error because I followed your other steps very carefully.

Excellent video. I have followed all steps multiple times thoroughly and every time I have done so all I receive is a Ring box with an x in the corner. I have my ring integration fully setup, but for some reason it seems the two are tied together. I have no integrations showing up for nest, just the ring has remained. Any advice?

You might need to make sure you don't have any existing credentials. Should be a pinned comment at the top of this video.

I've tried several times to follow the instructions you've provided to add my Nest Thermostat to Home Assistant and every single time it's failed. I've even deleted all the Google Projects and started from scratch, and although the Integration is found, it consistently gives me a blank object box after entering the Project ID and Device Access ID.

I'm stuck at Device Access console "The project could not be created." I've had Welcome to the Google Developer Program email and confirmation the money has been paid. Even when skipping the OAuth client ID. Any ideas?

Question. I recently switch one of my google nest thermostat from a second generation to the 3rd generation thermostat. Now I don't see my upstairs thermostat is not showing any entity . The upstairs thermostat was the one I replaced. Do I need to re integrate Google again. or how can I fix it? thanks
